  1. alien threat on Taking Issue With The Outer Space Treaty · · Score: 1

I kinda believe that we will need a huge alien theat in order to forget our own petty squabbles. If there was something dangerous to mankind as a specis, i think we would become much more unified as "mankind". Bring on the Klingons!!

  2. consumers on Will Digital Cinema Wipe-Out Today's Movie Theaters? · · Score: 1

If the movie industry wanted to reign in the theatres with digital tech, then I could see the immediate cost increase being passed onto the consumer...image 10-15$ movie tickets! Or perhaps a time based system where opening night costs much more to see than perhaps a couple weeks out.

  3. hmmmmmm on Unofficial GBA SDK Available for Free · · Score: 1

So does this mean that with the ROMS that are for the SNES, we could somehow make our own port of say "Secret of Mana" (or some other SNES title) for the GBA? That would be awesome! Though probably not awesome enough for me to spare time to learn this.

Actually....if they really noticed such a drop in consumption of their "product" they would just use it as ammo to say that everyone that used to give them money is now just pirating their stuff. (RIAA/MPAA person: just look, if i type in "warez" in google it comes up with 3 zillion matches!! See the piracy?? See??)

  8. well... on System Administrators - College or Career? · · Score: 1

I think the answer depends on where you want to work. Do you want to work at a fortune 500, or a mom & pop place? I did not go to college (though my AS in applid science is half done) and I work at a very large company. The drawback to not having the degree is that there are sometimes rules in place in the recruitment and promotion process that will actually keep you from getting to the sys admin job - the fact that you have the piece of paper matters almost as much (if not more) than your actual job specific knowledge. On the other hand, Mom and Pop probably only care that you can DO the job, which certifications usually help prove. So if you wanna go get Red Hat certified or some sort of Sun certificate go for that, and it would probably be valuable. And above all - do what you want to do. College is not for everyone, and just because you dont go does not mean you cant do something- though it may take longer (I am on a track to becoming a DBA or SysAdmin here, but its more uphill for me because of the degree issue). And it always helps to know a couple people too!
    Good luck!

  9. uh oh on Playstation 3 In the Works · · Score: 1

So they want to focus on online gaming? That means someone has to shell out 300-400 for the console itself, 50 per game, 10 for the mem card, and THEN pay 10-20 a MONTH for the access to the servers...yikes (per game im sure)! I hope this doesnt come out anytime soon because I know for a fact that I will have to buy it. I mean...its sony. They MAKE you buy this stuff or they come to your house with big goons who break your legs, right? I mean...I HAVE to buy it.

  18. Why is this necessary? on Ebert, Gillmor on the Music Industry · · Score: 1

Everytime I see something like this, dealing with copywright of works that are meant for entertainment, I can only think to myself (after feeling angry at the level of greed displayed by said companies/organazations) that why is this even necessary? Why are we content to only listen to the crap that these people market? A good lot of it really isnt even all that good, but we are used to it and its in the media. The more they do this, the more I realize that ANY money I spend on "entertainment" purposes like non-live music is just a complete waste of money. This moves me more and more towards the unsigned bands available at sites like audiogalaxy or mp3.com that do not charge for their music.

  19. Re:what about... on Face Recognition On Mobile Phones · · Score: 2, Funny

Dont worry. After a few isolated cases of murders eluding cell phone distributed policing technology (CPDPT) through facial hair and/or masks, congress (along with the phone companies, cell phone makers, police, and the RIAA and MPAA) will pass laws restricting the growth of facial hair and or sunglasses.
