Unless I am wrong about what you are referring to as "home phone service", you are wrong here at least regarding the long distance plan level I have. I pay $2.95 per month and get 5 cents per minutes 24/7. This monthly fee/per minute combo is the lowest I have seen. I was paying $3.95 per month for the same per-minute charge through IDT America until AT&T called. AT&T may have even given me a check for $X when I switched.
No, there is no reason have it enabled. I too disable it after installing the OS. I do it, because I don't the autorun app loading each time I insert a CD.
I did buy the CD online at BestBuy.com last week. Although I didn't notice the DRM warning, I wasn't looking for it. It must have been on the wrapper, because it is not on the jewel case or cardstock sleeve.
I first read about this yesterday. I bought the CD last week and didn't notice the DRM label reportedly on the wrapper. I would have bought it anyway.
Autoplay is always disabled on my WinXP box, because for me, having it enabled is actually an inconvenience. I had no problem ripping them to WMA(done initially out of habit)and then to MP3(switched to this for use under FreeBSD).
Although this "protection" didn't keep me from using the CD in this way, most Joe and Jane Users will not have this disabled. So, this protection might keep them from ripping. The main P2P users are kids, and most of them will eventually know how to circumvent it whether it be by disabling autorun or pressing the shift key.
Perhaps I am wrong here. Could it be, just maybe, a niche market that will never grow beyond the consumers that presently have a PDA and are willing to buy new ones periodically?
You are actually forgetting that target market doesn't want all of the tracks on the CD; they only want one or two singles. So, the health risk isn't as bad as you noted. : )
Although I believe the user has a responsibility in this, vendors could still work towards less easily exploited products. This router could have shipped with the serial number set as the username/password instead a single, product-wide u/p pair. PC manufactors have the ability to note the serial number in the BIOS, Linksys probably could as well. This shouldn't be mandated, it should be something the vendor does to improve public relations and product value.
Granted, I don't have one of these WI-FI routers so I can't verify this. I suspect that the device's user manual instructed the user on how to further secure the device beyond it's out-of-the-box default state. I believe that the vendor's responsibility should end with that in this type of situation, and that the user is responsible for R'ingTFM regardless of how plug-n-play the router might be.
So, even though Earthlink has there SpamBlocker service, it doesn't block the SPAM they generate?

Yeah, even with the card readers that so many merchants have now, some of those that I frequent still ask to see the card. These generally key in something, perhaps the last four digits of the number or that other three digit number. I believe Best Buy and Home Depot are that that generally do this.
Just think, some of these kids will taking such a likely to these things, that they'll eventually trade in the Legoland wristbands for house-arrest devices provided by their criminal system.
That's been my stance all along. People buying only the singles that they hear on the radio and see videos for on "not-Music Television" are missing out on all of the other great songs most good artists have. I often buy a CD after hearing the single and rarely end up disappointed.
As for the proposed price increase, this will hinder the sell of digital tracks(more so if the price is closer to $2.49 than $1.25). People will either return to stealing...I mean sharing... or to ripping from legally obtaining and cheaper CDs.
...The faster hardware gets, the more bloated MOST software gets! Not just PIM apps!
Wow, we can throw in today's kitchen sink and those of the past decade as well with all of the power, memory, and storage now available. It seems that some outfits don't care to about writing with small footprint and low resource intensivity in mind these days!
Yeah, I do the same thing. I also use a file renaming utility that I wrote to rename each of the files with an custom name and incrementing number. I have been getting by just fine without help for years! Users need to pay attention to where they save stuff! So, again, why does the world need this?
Those smaller, less known bands are probably managing the distribution on their own. You should look harder online for contact info and then get in touch with the artist to learn what the outlets are. If the artist wants it music heard, then they probably distributing it some way. I bet they will mail you one; just ask!
You should buy the whole CD, because that is how the artist/label has chosen to package that track you want. The artist/label own it. You might be surprised to find that other tracks are good even though you haven't heard them.
How many times have you sent money directly to the artist? I would bet you have not yet gotten the first check out! Yet, you claim that you would do this if only you had that contact information you. Yeah, yeah, every reason you have is just an excuse.
For those artists signed to a label, big or small, had to accept the terms of doing so. They knew that the label would probably make more and most in many cases, money off that CD. Yet, they accepted the terms, because they understood that the label's distribution and marketing efforts would help them develop a much larger fanbase. By increasing the fanbase, an artist will begin to make more money from touring.
The bottom line is this. The only right you have when the terms are not what you would prefer is the right to say no.
Convenience the right way is not necessary without shortfalls. Buy from what's available at 11PM or wait until later when what you really want is available. It's a choice.

That doesn't make stealing okay! Walmart is open 24/7 in so many places; your area's store is probably one of them!
There will be a way eventually. Just as a post above on the thread makes very clear, everything will eventually be cracked. It is simply a matter of time, because the will and effort already exist. Jon Johansen must have the will, because he nearly lost his ass over DeCSS.
Does requiring drivers to be licensed keep those not off the road? No. Will taxing email be enough of a deterrent to keep people from sending SPAM? I am certain that it won't, because much of the SPAM is sent from overseas where US taxes and laws has no baring.
Cyber bullying...What? It's the same thing that has been happening from the dawn of time, just modernized. The spreading of half-truths and outright lies, teasing, bullying, etc is, in mind, good for kids. A kid needs to learn how to deal with unfavorable situations.
I was a nerd growing up and got picked on for it. It made me a stronger person and prepared me for life where everything isn't a rosy picture. The kids today are being raised as wimps so that they don't get their feelings hurt. Everyone's a winner! There are no losers!
Yes I would switch to MacOS X if it would run as well on my existing box.
