This sounds like a huge waste as well. Wonder who is pocketing the half that they aren't spending on the actual project. Sounds like a $600 toilet seat to me.
Just because someone watches or even enjoys Star Trek doesn't mean they think Stross is wrong. It just means they don't care enough about his point to base their enjoyment of Star Trek off of.
I don't blame ccp for running eve on Microsoft. I would as well in that situation. Microsoft has worked closely with CCP to optimize the software to run the EVE cluster well. Something they are unlikely to get anywhere else for the same cost.
That's not really true anymore, I myself have been involved in battles recently with 1000+ fighting each other with little to no lag. The way eve does it has two issues: nodes wont run on multi-cores currently (I think they are working to fix this limitation) and hardware hasn't advanced enough. Personally, I do think CCP is close. I've never seen more then about 1200 involved in a single fight.
Where did you get your facts from? I'm guessing you pulled them out of your rear end. No items or characters may be sold for real money. The only thing that comes close is the game time trade which is exactly opposite, selling real stuff ( a service) for imaginary money. Also, when you sign up and the first time you play, like most other mmos, the EULA states that nothing ingame belongs to you. You are just paying for the right to use a service, which is connecting to ccp's servers. I'm sure most judges would laugh at you and then the IRS or some similar agency would ask for there cut.
EVE takes a while to get into. Its sand box nature that allows these scams and heist is what makes it fun. Personally, I find the battles in the outlands fun. Especially when 200 capitals die. http://www.eveonline.com/mb/news.asp?nid=3163
GHSC didn't have anything to do with that last one. They recruited the guy after he ripped the corp off because they are irrelevant. It was also one corporation, not an alliance that it really didn't even effect. I am in said alliance.
No, Ambulation I think is scheduled for the patch after the one being referred to here. I hear they are making a lot of progress on it though, but don't expect it to be quick.
As far as grinding is concerned, EVE is a sandbox, you do not have to run a single mission. Personally, I prefer the 0.0 wars. Last week we had a 100 dreads +400-500 support vs 100 dreads + 400 to 500 support 5 hour fight that was rather lag free for most of the fight. I had ok frame rate, could target, activate modules, etc without problems. This was the biggest so far, but there have been other fights that have been close.
They are constantly improving on the new player experience. It is a lot easier to learn now then it was 5 years ago. Biggest issue now is a lot of people try and skip over the tools they give thinking they will just pick it up.
Yet, she has more executive experience then anyone else running on either ticket. If you forgot from school, that is the branch that President falls under.
This is the same and only scandal in eve excluding players scamming other players. Its just someone else posting the same rehash of the same old information.
I am actually impressed by the large fleet battles lately. Early on in the game if you tried something like that it would have taken the entire cluster down with just 200 players.
Currently, there is no need for Shards. Server does fine most of the time. Recently, there was even a battle with over 600 involved in one system at the same time. Alot of the hub systems even hold 700 without too much problems. As long as everyone doesn't try and crowd the hub systems and spread out a bit, I rarely have any reason to visit these areas other than to do some shopping for new toys every few months.
If anyone is intreasted, they are doing a 5vs5 pvp tournement between all the alliances on the weekends during the summer and broadcasting it live. Here. Also, here are some community created videos, mostly some battles.
That being said, EVE is a great game if you like sci-fi space type stuff and have some time to kill. Although it sometimes suffers from lag in busy systems, no need to shard at this point. Give it a try and dont hang in the hubs.
I agree, the camaras in stores dont seem to stop the shop lifters, they could care less. Do they actually think a terroist is going to care about a camara that someone "might" be paying attention at any given time.

That would be nice, but its unrealistic to get all the code to be perfectly multithreded without adding any additional overhead.

Just to note, 200 capitals are worth more then the isk in the scam.

writting the passwords down isn't the biggest concern I see here. If its in the will, wont it become public record?

Also keep in mind that all items have a "hidden" tax currently included in the cost. Those taxes would go away and competition would lower prices.

Mining is not where the fun is. PvP is where most of the action in eve is. Mining is a great way to make isk, but not much else.

Since I play Eve...
A little background on why people would trust ISS.
ISS is very large alliance. If they break the trust of other people, it will hurt them in the long run.
Yes, scamming is part of the game, that is why trust is hard to come by. Its often earned through very hard work.
"At Truman High School in Lee's Summit"
That line proves it wasn't researched very well, Truman High School is in Independence, MO, not Lee's Summit. Im from the area. Truman High School

I was also thinking about DoS too. Slashdot effect might look like a DoS on port 80.
Do they cover your bandwidth bill when some random infected virus sends packets to your secured site even if you dont get infected?
If we have to risk making "choices" that we had no idea about to install priatary software, then why install it?
FCC would cease to regulate the Internet.
