    BD has lots of capacity. They bring MPEG-4 codecs too.
    50GB disc.
    Hmm. You can fit a full season of TV series on single disc.
    Large boxed set->single Bluray disc.
    24x45min=16hours. Then its 3GB per hour, which is somewhat more than with DVD.
    With better codecs your image quality would be better than DVD with that.
    For high definition there might be need to split it for two discs. But still its ONE potential way of using the additional space.

    Another is removing scene labeled "please insert disc 2" from some movies.
    Boxed set->single disc.

    Sure there is quality improvement, but I think bigger improvement is getting rid of that stop that happens in some DVD titles.

    Yeah, there is one catch though.
    I spend some time listening same music on my friends cars sound system.
    Now I just cant bear the sound of my speakers.
    Probably getting 2 genelec speakers, for stereosystem as soon as I can really afford them.

    In order to utilize the moderators there is true need to prevent them wasting points by promoting an already great posts to a true gem.
    Think of it.
    What would happen to posts that now gets to 3 or 4. They wouldn't get there because all would moderate the same posts again and again to +30 or something. Yes, there is no need to point out that this thing is true gem over the need for pointing out that this thing is worth of reading.

    The cost of FAB has been growing and will grow all the time. At same time production capacity of a FAB has gone up even faster.
    DEC died because its management though they couldn't afford the increasing cost of fab in long run.
    IBM:s semiconductor business makes losses, just because its TOO SMALL.
    [In IBM:s case the profits come from consulting for systems build from the components that semiconductor business unit makes.]
    Its all about capability of filling the minimum unit size with products, that bring the cash. Also its about putting all their research for entire group to utilize.
    There is plenty of reasons why they want all their semiconductor research to be utilized. And if this move bring them a process generation ahead of competition, then their margins could go sky high. [By halving the per chip costs.]

    Intel seems to be only one capable of staying in business completely alone.

    I just rounded few PEAK consumption figures.

    125 wats x2 for the GFX cards.
    100 Wats x4 for the fastest dualcore opterons.
    15 wats x 10 for the 15krpm SCSI:s.
    10 wats x 16 for ram.
    Soundcard,chipset,network, DVD writer. 40 wats total.

    1000 wats total,

    TYAN thunder K8QW is the motherboard where everything fits.

    Sure 1kw is overkill for with mass market enthuastics but don't underestimate the needs of the rich.
    So 8 cores and 32GB of ram, and large SCSI raid array and two fastest GFX cards, it might be overkill but its most certainly the fastest system, for everyday linux desktop usage, with a multithreaded app.
    Sure the system is not cheap, but there are multiple situations where such "desktop" system would be warranted.
    One is with a 100k$ per user workstation application use by 100k$ per year employee, another is when you have millions and don't care about the price.

    4. Google hires Guido to find best way to make all Google python code compatible to future versions.

    Perhaps not exacly like this, but I think hiring Guido to google is going to stabilize python atleast that much that future versions of python won't break the entire python based code base of Google.

    Sure as long as there is no unnatural barriers like human habitation and freeways blocking the species changing from one habitat to other.
    Think of it a little.
    Previosly when something happened. Like things gotten warmer. The species travelled more to the north. Or changed their eating habbits. Now humans have taken lots of landmass between natural reserves. There is barrier for nature to move to different habitat.

    Little ice age, and medieval warm period both where MAINLY european anomalies. Not global.
    I knew about both when I wrote. Thats why I said global.
    Sure, there is one temporary quick change that can happen without human intervention, volcanic ash may cool earth pretty quickly. As can asterites.
    Also I spoke about sea currents besides global. EUROPE gets its share of cold when there north atlantic circulation weakens. And the sea currents can heat the europe more when they are stronger.

    Anyway east coast of USA is going to be pretty good area to spot hurricanes with the global warming, and its nice to know that the global warming is starting to bite USA, in not too distant future.

    You know what we are talking now.
    You talked about MILLIONS of years ago.
    Vs years ago.
    The global climate changes naturally, in thousands of years period, not years.
    The true problem is that for most of people 50 years is a long time.
    For climate 100 years or 200 years is like a blink of an eye.
    Any change that is visible in human life time in global climate is not natural.
    And I said clobal. A change in ocean currents can happen faster.

    There is enough evidence for the fact that not entire warming up is caused by humans.
    There is ample of evidence showing that there was warming that was 10% as fast as current rate before industrial revolution. However there is ample of evidence showing that humans are the MAIN contributing factor right now. So yes. Its correct to say that the earth is warming up naturally and humans are not the entire cause for warm up. Yes its correct to say that with out industrial revolution the earth would warm up anyway. Only thing that if there is omission of fact that the natural rate is so small that it doesn't matter too much for survival of many species, and we would of had 1000 yeard or more time to adapt to new warmer environment. Instead of much faster change we are having now.

    There is plenty of lobbying using that fact against any actions to reserve.
    They look what ever reasons there are for the 10% warm up, and state them as some of the reasons for warming up. And show up many natural ways of warming up our planet.

    The worst lie is lie that has some truth in it because its easier to "proof" that its true by proofing whats true in the statement.

    There is plenty of ways that the gene can do that...
    One is to reduce the effect of gene that make males think sex more and earlier in their life.
    There is even small chance of just increasing activity in early age.
    There are plenty of indirect and direct things that affect IQ tests, and a gene that just correlates with those result might just be one of those indirect things that just can be overcome.

    Here's a nice suggestion to that. Increase oil price artificially by taxation, reduce other taxes to compensate.

    Now here is a business idea, get a vechicle that consumes little amount of fuel per passanger and you can fit lots of passangers in it start moving people around with it.
    Another business idea is to build a small shop near to where people live and sell things at higher prices than at the large malls, after people realize how much it costs to drive to mall they are willing to buy it near by and save time in process.
    Any more great business ideas that would come if oil price would be increased substantially?

    I doubt that. Or atleast it depends how you measure it. The shares size is kind of worth there was in dot com businesses mostly defined by expectations, sales and income is the tanglible worth.

    So do you estimate google grows about 10x bigger in income or sales in a year?
    Or is your estimate that in next year peoples expectations on googles growth makes its share price grow beyong microsoft?
    Sales is the thing thats mostly used to define company size. More sales-> more to spend.

    A large curved mirror at polar orbit. Think how nice it would be that sunlight of few square kilometers worth that would be otherwice wasted would be directed on a area of meter wide and few meters in length. Sure the atmostphere would widen the affected area so that people could "enjoy" a nice little hot wave ;) And as the earth revolves under it, it could be designed in a way that most people on earth could enjoy it ;) [Except in cases when the mirror is turned to other direction] The polar orbit is good for keeping it in the sun ALL the time. Another good option is Geostationary so that you can deside WHERE to aim it when it works.
