Seems like all the slashdotters are looking at this from the perspective of people who just want to have less time sleeping.
I agree that not sleeping on this stuff (or other meds) long term is crazy, but you are not going to stop people who want to risk their health by refusing to sleep like some (or many) truckers for instance on long hauls. Better that they be alert than risking my life on the road due to falling asleep at the wheel. What about somebody who only has x amount of days/months/years to live due to a disease? Reducing sleep gives them more life. I say give it to whomever wants it and let em sign a release form.
Oh pulleeze. Nobody is forcing anybody to use google. When you choose a "service" run by somebody else you accept the risks involved. If you are concerned that it might change then don't use it. Build your own email server and everything else you want at home and stop whining.
It's getting harder and harder to evaluate LEGITIMATE issues with google from the people that just like to complain because they are happy when they are complaining about something thats popular.
It's the Law for the U.S. Federal Gov. And they (Apple) comply. You have to go through the federal sales rep to make it happen, but as I understand it all the secret 3 letter agencies don't have to give back the drives that are bad.
Yes. It is better. Not by virtue that people who program are any less prone to mistakes like buffer overflows, but because (in my opinion of course) the UNIX design for OS security is better than the Windows design for security.
Ask just about any security expert which design philosophy they like better and I'll bet hands down UNIX wins over Windows.
I've always wondered why more gyms don't by equipment that gathers the excess electricity and sell it back to the power company. I bet the average Golds Gym probably puts out an incredible amount of power from all those machines.
Are these common laser pointers you find for use on PPT presentations and exercising your cat/dog without moving from the sofa? Or are these more powerful items?
Maybe not at your apartment, but if you are wealthy enough to own an island like Richard Branson having one of these to power the electricity there is a market. I could see island communities all over the world looking at these.
My post is not about Republicans in particular. A fact that people who marked me as "Troll" are too brainwashed to see.
Paying attention to the government and your military is a good thing, it just seems that the only people who watch them are the partisans of the politicians out of power. Maybe I'm jaded but I'm not betting that whomever replaces GW is going to shut down Gitmo immediately, give an order to withdrawal troops from Iraq/Afghanistan on day 1 of their administration , rescind executive orders or give up executive power that GW and congress have given the presidency.
People need to wake up, but I'd bet all the uproar about gitmo and everything else people are foaming at the mouth about will "magically" switch when the other side getting in power with republicans trying to pin the Dems as hypocrites and Dems claiming either 1) "It's not us" or 2) Dragging their feet
Once a democrat is elected all this will change and the U.S. will be a government/military that is respected round the world, because it's OBVIOUSLY the result of republican evil dooers.
I sure hope all these people watching GW and his crowd don't put on magic eyeshades when/if a democrat prez comes into office.
My bet is they will (ignore all this evil) once their guy comes to power
I REALLY don't want to have to go to the extreme of doing mounted volume or full disk encryption schemes on my HOME COMPUTER! But at the rate things are going I'll not have any choice if the gov can appropriate your computer for something like bogus MP3s.
Oh well....
You know it's not that all of these laws are really enforced. It's just another in the pile that they use IF they want to.
Cop "What's that? I hear somebody screaming inside! Kick the door down!"
Me "Nobody's screaming!"
Cop "DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Me "Gulp.."
Cop "hmmm..nobody screaming but look at this! A copy of Barry Manilow's greatest hits burned on a CD. Where is your receipt sir?"
Me "Receipt? I bought that 20 years ago"
Cop "no prob...5 years and 20,000 per copy...take his computer too. If he has one pirated copy he is bound to have more"
Sounds stupid but if the government is convinced you are guilty and they want to go to the trouble of getting you they can just open the statue book and find something to charge you with even if there is no evidence of the original crime.
"The hack raises tough questions for operators of virtual worlds. Should they be as secure as banks and guarantee the safety of money and property that characters in the world possess?"
What is with you anyhow (to Zonk). The stories are OCCASIONALLY ok, but your conclusions are idiotic
I only believe what I have evidence to see, unless we are talking about religion then it's a self evident truth that I'm only privy to.
Now not saying that your THEORY that the NSA has their own botnets does not have merit (I can think of reasons why) but do you actually have evidence? Or are you just saying "The NSA is Evil and Evil hackers like Botnets so the NSA has botnets"
Although I think it's legitimate issue about tasers, where is all the grief and "resolutions" about torture and mayhem going on in SO many different dictatorships around the world using methods truly medieval?
I'd like to point out that the Recommendations are usually made by Scientists and Researchers that come from outside NSF. NSF works by inviting University/College experts to come to Arlington, sit down and talk about what should be done, then a recommendation is drawn up. In the end NSF still decides what to do but don't think that the recommendation was drawn up by a bunch of green eye shades accountants or government bureaucrats.
Although I'm sure there are some Slashdotters who run Firefox on a 350 Mhz PII with 256Mb of memory, that is really not issue for me. Most people with a recent PC probably have over a Gig of memory and more like 2 onboard.
CPU utilization where the browser all of a sudden is sucking down 100% of your CPU or of a single core and/or crashes are just as important (or more). More than likely the memory leaks have related browser stability issues that can be addressed with single fixes but if the browser continues to have runaway CPU issues and crashes it will not matter HOW small a footprint of memory it uses.
Good point. I wonder how many flames you would get in a forum where EVERYBODY'S name, address, phone number and email are available to all the forum members (as a requirement for joining). You would have to have some way of validating the info of course to make sure people did'nt just make up who they were. I'd imagine people would be less likely to fly off the handle. You would still get SOME I'd imagine, but it would be interesting to see what would happen.
Sounds similar to

So....
How hard would it be to launch a nuke and hit the asteroid in such a way that increases it's chances of hitting mars?
Of course this would probably cause an interstellar war with the Martians, but still...

I guess this means the GPL is also null and void there as well.
Not that I'm trying to be a Troll, just a random thought that crossed my mind as interesting.

This assumes that each side with nukes are rational and not religious or facist whatever fanatics.
When you religion promises you paradise upon death they really don't care about MAD.
If the MPAA or RIAA think this will boost their sales they are for a big surprise (as far as I think).
I'll result to buying EVERYTHING used. CD's/DVD's/software. I should be doing it already but this will push me right over that cliff.

One of the real problems is that the last time there was competition in the OS Market for Intel Compatible systems was....when?
The late 80s! There are kids today who have gone through grades 1-12 and college without ever knowing a world where MS was not dominant.
I only believe what I have evidence to see, unless we are talking about religion then it's a self evident truth that I'm only privy to.

The Apple Sales rep should of been at his door 10 minutes after he said that.
Mod this guy up somebody!
Although I think it's legitimate issue about tasers, where is all the grief and "resolutions" about torture and mayhem going on in SO many different dictatorships around the world using methods truly medieval?
- Those that believe ANY sort of coercive interrogation is torture
- Those who believe that the ends justify the means
Why don't people who exist in between ever speak up?!
1. Define P2P that is clear. So far nobody (that I've seen) has been able to do it in a way that everybody can agree.
2. As long as ISP's use the word "Unlimited" in their sales pitches I'll continue to bitch about caps transferred bytes.
