I guess it's time to see if PostgreSQL's documentation and tools have managed to get any less user-hostile over the years. I'm fairly familiar with both, and I believe PG's manual is better than MySQL's. They are both good, but every section in PG's manual gets straight to the point with as few words as possible, and it is very easy to follow.

Unlike with taxes for necessary government services, I'm not getting anything for that. That is NOT right.

I guess I posted that partly in case some mafiAA representative were reading these comments. I want them to know loud and clear not to pull that crap in the USA. If they do, my commitment to playing fair and purchasing albums and DVDs I want stops.

But if I were *forced* to pay them for all blank media, I would feel jolly free to copy as much as I want, whenever, for whatever purpose. They would infringe my rights, why can't I return the favor?

    > It is interesting that the Muslim heaven has a worldly reward (the flesh of women) there, isn't it?

    Yes.

Cross reference to Mormonism, which promises good Mormons "celestial sex" to procreate and fill new worlds.

Both Mormon and Islam view of heaven absolutely does seem filled with human imagination, not the revelation of a transcendent God.

But take a look at the historic Christian view of heaven.

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him." (1 Corinthians 2:9)

"And so we will live with the Lord always." (1 Thesselonians 4:17)

No mention of virgins, no "you will become gods." The primary stated reward is being able to live with God in the perfect place He has designed for us.

This is one of many things that truly differentiates historic Christianity from the other world religions. Another is the concept of salvation by grace. Pretty much all other religions, even the other major monotheistic ones, place high importance on works. One must do enough good deeds to be saved, and even then one cannot be sure. I know, for example, that Mormons and Muslims are not 100% sure where they are going when they die; they just hope they managed to get to the highest kingdom (Mormon) or that Allah has favor on them (Muslim).

Christianity is again different here. The Bible teaches that people *cannot* be good enough to earn their salvation. But it is available to all, freely.

There -- a small sampling of the reasons I am a Christian. This is Slashdot after all, so flame/question away. I don't need my karma anyway.

I'll keep buying ASUS just for its built in eSATA port if no other reason, until others follow suit. Much better than USB2 for hard drives, and better than firewire too IMHO. And built in is much better than through an ExpressCard like you'd need to do with other vendors.

Of course, I don't think ASUS uses ATi cards, only nVidia. That's good for now, but when the open source 3D for ATi is complete, I won't want nVidia anymore.

Really ticked customers who I couldn't tell anything of substance to. About 48 hours later, I finally figured out who had my server, and called them. (No one ever called me.) They put it up, increased my monthly fee, and their service sucked. Was in a big-arse data center, but I can't count the number of times my server lost connectivity and/or was uncleanly powered off in the next two months. Finally I got out of there. Yep I agree. Monopoly is really great when played right. Too bad more people don't. Maybe we could play online using Atlantik, assuming you use Linux. :)

Regarding immunity deals, here's my interpretation: The rules obviously don't allow them. BUT since the rules also do not require one to collect rent when an opponent lands on your property, it is possible to make a gentleman's agreement not to collect rent on X number of lands on your newly developed property. However, since it is nothing but a gentleman's agreement, said agreement could be broken on a whim. If you offered someone such a "deal", and they land on your property, and you decide to be mean and collect rent anyway, then they are absolutely obligated to pay. So it's a matter of trust. I have never actually done anything like that and don't know if it would be a good idea -- probably not.

  22. Re:No-one ever wants to play Monopoly with me.. on Busy Lives Prompt Speedier Board Games · · Score: 4, Interesting

"Takes too long" is a cop-out excuse by people who don't like Monopoly. If that's what they say, forget it, they wouldn't be good game partners anyway.

In my experience, if you play Monopoly RIGHT (by the official rules) and focus on the game instead of gabbing about other things the whole time, it can take two hours or less, sometimes as little as one hour.

Monopoly is also a lot more brilliant a game than most people think. Most people who "like Monopoly" don't have a clue what most of the rules are, and they insist on playing with house rules that completely mess up the game's economy and add too much luck (*cough* Free Parking Jackpot *cough*). Another offense is allowing as many houses/hotels as you want. The game has a carefully chosen limit of 32 houses and 12 hotels -- there must NEVER be more than that on the board. Many don't want to play with the auction rule, where all properties landed on that aren't immediately purchased must immediately be auctioned. Not to mention other silliness like trading immunities to paying rent for trades.

Hint: All "house rules" are bad, but the ones that run counter to the game's goal -- bankrupting every player but you ASAP -- will make the game last longer. Play it right and you'll fly through it!

There's actually quite a bit in the Bible that seems to support the Big Bang. The two biggest aspects of the BB are 1) it all came into existence from nothing a finite period of time ago and 2) continuous cosmic expansion.

Of course Genesis 1:1 supports the first point. Hebrews 11:3 says that what we can see was created from what is invisible. Titus 1:2 implies that time itself has a beginning -- something cosmologists discovered in the last few decades.

As for the second point, there are ten verses in the old testament, mostly in the prophets, that describe God as stretching out the heavens. Isaiah 42:5 says "the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out" -- note the two aspects of the BB combined in a single phrase. Jeremiah 10:12 and 51:15 say that God "stretched out the heavens by his understanding." Tis is pretty consistent with the fine-tuning of the universe that we see. Psalm 104:2 says that God stretches out the heavens "like a tent." Not too bad if you add an extra dimension. Just like a tent surface is a 2D covering of a 3D space, the universe is sort of like the 3D surface of 4D space.

I think many "fundie" Christians are doing the faith a huge disservice by trying to argue against the big bang!

I am copying a message I recently read on some web forums dedicated to discussing sexuality from a Christian perspective. The context is oral sex:

    ********
One of the really cool things about God's design of the male body is this: When sexual arousal begins, two very important things for OS begin to take place. First, the opening to the bladder is squeezed shut, making it difficult for urine to pass through (which is why it's difficult for guys to urinate while they have an erection). Second, the Cowper's glands, which are located close to the prostate, secrete a substance that neutralizes any remaining urine in the urethra.

So, when your FW performs OS on you, rest assured that she will not be getting any urine in her mouth!

Just another cool thing God did to bless the marriage bed, I figure! :)
