Yet you ignored the preceding sentences to pick that tid bit out. You also fail to understand that they are NOT KILLING THEM. They take some blood and then release them far from where they are capturing them to harvest the blood. THe very WIki article I linked to describes this in detail if you so choose.

LAL is obtained from the animals' blood. Horseshoe crabs are returned to the ocean after bleeding, although some 3% die during the process. Studies show the blood volume returns to normal in about a week, though blood cell count can take two to three months to fully rebound.[24]

So three percent of them die, Frankly I am not that worried about that.

Yes, living in many major cities is living in the slums. I am sorry if that offends you but you have never lived in say Atlanta. I would not want to live in the Atlanta city limits. I would also not want to live near the Atlanta city limits, the neighborhoods close to the city are often worse then the city itself.

Ohh and I do not buy the whole cost of living in the city is cheaper then the suburbs. The rent for a decent place in ATL is over 1400 dollars. The rent I am paying right now is less then half that, which fully pays car note, car insurance, and the cost of gas. On top of that I get to avoid smog, I get a larger place in a nice neighborhood, and I get to look out of my window and see green.

I used to live south of Atlanta. I never saw traffic issues in my area. I just didnt. But when I would drive into Atlanta The 6 lane in each direction interstate would be bumper to bumper, and then you get on to the surface streets and it would be even worse, narrow lanes, many long traffic lights. Almost impossible to merge over 6 lanes to take the next left, etc, etc.

I will never choose to move to a big city. From my point of view it is horrid.

It doesn't matter if it is a slum, the land price inside the city is many times the cost of land outside of the city. You know supply and demand. There is not much land in the city so supply is low. Now to be fair sense they aren't great areas the land is not in high demand, but there is not enough effect to offset the low supply.

Add on top of that the large cost of renovating said areas, the cost of stricter regulations of being in the big city, and the cost of living for their emplyees it is not surprisng that they choose to build outside of the big cities. Among other things.

Personally I would rather work at a manicured campus out in the suburbs rather then anywhere near the crazy traffic of the cities.

I remember growing up in Atlanta, school would sometimes be canceled at almost the last minute for snow. I can remember many times Clayton County being canceled after 7 am. In fact we used to guess that they canceled it then so the administration has time to drive in to work themselves and get a first hand look at the roads. It drove my parents nuts, because they couldn't plan. Shoot I remember school getting canceled an hour after it started, they sent everyone home. That was circa early 90s though.

  25. Re: "Everybody ignored the Winter Storm Warning" on Atlanta Gambled With Winter Storm and Lost · · Score: 1

You misunderstand the difference between advisories, watches and warnings.

Advisory: Issued a few days in advance, it means there is a good chance of bad weather.
Watch: It means it is looking likely that bad weather will happen, often dispursed a day or so ahead of time if possible.
Warning: A warning means this will almost assuredly happen. Start acting on the advice now if you haven't already. Issues as far in advance as possible.

The warning was issued at 3:30 am and the snow hit at noon. That means more then 8 hours to prepare for this. That is plenty of time to close the schools, government offices, suggest that businesses have workers stay home, and get whatever salt trucks you have to start pretreating.

This was the local government and the state government that failed to not only act but had no plan in place to start with. I grew up in metro ATL. This is par for the course and has been for years. We can also certainly place blame on the drivers. In fact I remember driving in those conditions with the ATL drivers. You have half of them thinking they can speed like usual, and the other half going ten miles an hour. Once the lane markers get covered you often see 4 lane roads reduced to two, one for the aholes who think they can drive 70 and a slow lane for those going 10. Cars start bouncing off each other like pinballs. Then no one clears their accident from the road and traffic just snarls as traffic behind tries to squeeze by.
