Perhaps the IT manager has different skills that are more appropriate to his job than the specific technical skills possessed by his subordinates.
For example, he might be a better communicator. The submission contains incorrect English that forces the reader to create their own meaning. It says, "Is it ignorant to believe an IT manager should be a knowledgeable in technology as a whole?" Perhaps the IT manager would read this sentence and desire to "educate" the subordinate in English.
I got a reasonably long piece of 1x4 inch board in a wood that matches my desk.
I then mounted my UPS on one side (the "back") of the board and mounted all of my other devices on the other side (the "front") of the board. The devices were stacked vertically and had their power cords immediately routed to the back of the board so that only the devices are visible. I mounted the devices to the board by screwing wood screws just under the device and then using extra-long zip-ties to secure the devices to the wood. The devices only rest on the screw heads leaving the devices unharmed.
I then stood the board on end in a nice decorative pot that was filled with decorative rocks to hold the board up.
Then my wife saw it and said I still had to cover it up, so I got a matching panel screen and used it to cover up my newly constructed tower.:(
The tower still resulted in all my devices off the shelf, off the floor, and neat and tidy.
This is simple divide and conquer: pump up the ego of a group or individual so that they resent their ally, then let the two former allies duke it out.

During the last election, a group didn't like the results of the Florida election so they proceeded to litigate it and question it in the media.
After this, two government groups made up of both Democrats and Republicans found no evidence of wrongdoing. Separately, a group of major newspapers looking to expose the story did an investigation and found no evidence of wrongdoing.
In the end, the media hype caused the nation to get into an uproar that caused a shift from punch cards to electronic voting. This shift was from one of the most idiot-proof and fix-proof methods of voting, to to one of the most fix-able forms of voting.
It is a bit ironic, (I might be wrong, Alanis Morissette messed me up) that there are people on Slashdot, a champion of freedom, that think this is bad.
The company doesn't want to require other game companies to make only clean and Christian games, it just wants to make them itself.
Although this story has 2619 comments, I believe it is out of place on Slashdot. This story is not "News for Nerds".
This stirring up controversy and fanning the flame is fitting if the subject is Linux vs Microsoft, Free vs Java, paper-trail vs Diebold, vi vs emacs, etc. It is not fitting when the subject is hate-the-president vs love-the-president.
Maybe someone should start a "News for Freedom Fighters" or "News for Foolproof Voters" site. Maybe someone already has.
Years ago, at an old job, we used an internal news server for project correspondence. Most news clients are better than any log app I have seen. It made sense and didn't seem that earth shattering. When someone joined a new project we told them to read all of the old posts.
It is a great idea that companies have been doing since before most slashdoters were using computers.
I worked in the legislative database business for quite a few years. It is very difficult to do, because every state's process is different and in some states a lot of the process is not automated.
I used to work for the industry leader, StateNet. They have been doing this for 29 years. I bet most slashdoters were not born 29 years ago!
I think Gimp made huge strides with the UI in Gimp 2. It now can use a permanent menu, dockable windows, and Utility Window Type Hints. The Gimp developers have done tremendous work. With all of these improvements I think UI criticism should stop.
To let it fully replace Photoshop for me it still needs higher bit color, adjustment layers, healing brush, and proportional crop.
I love OOo, but find PDF creation less than perfect.
It seems that on Linux neither OOo nor stock ghostscript is able to embed TTF fonts in PDF documents. This means that my PDF documents are large (embedded graphic fonts) and display poorly in Adobe Acrobat.
(Windows users might have a different experience.)
I have been waiting for vouchers from the settlement with California for quite some time and they are still not here! The settlement was supposedly approved by the court on January 10, 2003.
It is now far from the time originally promised for the distribution of the vouchers. I have seen the deadlines and distribution times change twice at the official website.
I can not help but feel that part of their plan is to s-t-r-e-t-c-h the process out as long as possible so that people forget about the vouchers. I originally held off on a new system purchase because I wanted to use my voucher, but have since given up.
Lets hope that Minnesota's settlement will be a bit more timely.
To me this sounds ludicrous. If you can consistently IM your family, then I guess that (1) your family is using computers too much, (2) you are not spending enough time together, and (3) you are getting too sedentary.
I imagine a house with 4 computers in 4 different rooms where mom, dad, son, and daughter all sit alone staring at the phosphorus. It sounds lonely and brings up images of the BORG.

I made an nice looking vertical tower of devices.

Don't fall for it.
I would love to use a TIVO as the hardware platform for MythTV or Freevo.
Is this possible with a version 2 or 2.5 TIVO? Has anyone done this?

Let us hope this does not happen again.
If you use a Gnome 2 based distro, almost everything will be nicely antialiased.
The distro should also provide OpenOfficeOrg and Mozilla that are compiled with xft.
I use Fedora Core 2, every program has nice fonts.
On a side note, try out Dustismo for a nice text font and Penguin Attack for a nice decorative font. I don't know why distros don't include them. GPL
I bought myself a WRT54G Router (about $60) for a similar purpose. After uploaded 3rd party firmware It has a similar functionality (no USB).
They both can be an access point, client or router.
The WRT54G is bigger, needs power, but hooks up to your computer via Ethernet and requires no driver.
I wanted a wireless client that did not use my CPU for a controller and did not taint the kernel. The WRT54G does a great job.
My biggest requirement for a party game: multi-player on the same screen.
Networked multi-player is nice when you can't be in the same place. but, if you are in the same place, then games that share the screen are more fun.
The consoles have this right. Don't add another system and monitor, just add another joypad. This brings people together rather than separating them.
There must be ETs for us to find them in 20 years.
That is quite an assumption in the headline.

Does it support using the mouse like a VT does?
Some do. Some don't. gnome-terminal doesn't, but I wish it did.
A lot of the console web browsers, mc, and suse's yast make good use of a mouse.
I have the same problem trying to configure any extension when running on Windows. .9 was installed over .8 via the setup program.
I have not tried Linux yet.
Redhat is doing a good job of making all standard applications have a consistent look and feel (BlueCurve).
They even followed Ximian's lead and made custom Open Office icons.

We should have called it a 'plog'.
I have been going to the grand daddy of all Kinetic Sculpture Races for a few years. It is in the fine north-west; Arcata to be exact.
Go check it out (May 29-31) if you want to see some home grown hilarious technology. The sculptors are bizarre and have to do some amazing feats!

When will Gimp support the awesome "healing brush" that Photoshop has?
After discovering Photoshops new "healing brush" for touching up photographs I will never be able to go back to just the clone tool.
The healing brush clones, makes the clone match the color characteristics of the surrounding pixels, and blends the clone with the surrounding pixels.
A 20 minute job can be done in 3 or 4 minutes.
I am running Gimp 2 beta and it still needs Adjustment Layers like Photoshop.
Adjustment Layers allow adjustments to be made to all layers underneath on a separate and changeable adjustment layer.
Don't like your first choice for "color levels", just select the layer and change it.
Want to change the text layer that was part of an image you just "color leveled", just change the text layer.
In Gimp these adjustments are lossy and final, in Photoshop they don't have to be.
To me this sounds ludicrous.

I also like to use gamepads and my wife won't play games that don't use them.
We like to play multiplayer games. My "multi-tap" is a nice STANDARD inline usb hub. My gamepads are all usb, including a PS2 pad with a usb dongle.
