I disagree. I use Outlook and have no complaints. I have my security settings raised so that attempts to integrate ActiveX and the like are blocked. Dodgy emails are quarantined by my host, and anything that gets through either has infected attachments stripped, or I (oh my god) don't open.
Compare the feature sets of Eudora and friends with what the Microsoft applications attempt. Maybe it's changed since I switched away from Eudora, but it didn't have read-responses, calendar/task sending and all the integration with Office that Microsoft's huge corporate clients want.
And primarily because we tend to focus on the function of the software, not on market value.
No, it's because so many developers (and this applies to small/amateur developers on the whole) focus on skins, supporting skins, creating ghastly skins, skin ranking systems, user-submitted skins (often even more ghastly), and anything related to skins, all of which are entirely irrelevant for almost all software.
Case in point: SpyBot -- brilliant piece of software that I downloaded recently. However, why should there even be "new cool Skins" for a little application that removes spyware from your computer?
I initially misread your post as "enlarge their three inch hard dicks". From the crap that my mail server blocks, the spammers have been trying to enlarge their three inch hard dicks for a long time...
How was that a troll?!? I made a statement that the hard drive was useful, and it's going to be something that will affect future console wars.
Right now, there are places around here that have sold out of xboxes (contributing to MS sales numbers) because people are buying and modding them (losing MS cash, cos no one's buying the games).
In the newspaper classifieds, the xbox modders advertising largely illegal services are outnumbering the PS2 equivalent by about 10 to 1.
The hard drive is very useful. I have two xbox, one with a 120gig drive, and another about to get modded with a 250gig drive. I can FTP to either from my laptop, fill them with games, DVDs, MP3s, etc. I can use xbconnect to access networked games online.
It's illegal as fuck, but I'd recommend it anyway!
Oh come on, any remotely attentive guy with a girlfriend* will know what a Fendi is!
* Note: Said guy must also have been tricked into watching Sex and the City on the odd occasion, and has also been dragged through rip-off markets in Ventimiglia on the border of France and Italy, and then dragged through more rip-off markets in Beijing, and paraded past the real-deals on Champs d'Elysee, in Canne, Nice, Antibes, Monaco, Hong Kong, Singapore, Luzerne, Madrid, Florence, etc.
Seriously, it depends on the age. If they're out of high school, all the old "trying to be cool" gear has usually disappeared and people will tend to be more appreciative of people being who they are. In that case, I'd encourage the nerd to just be themselves. Don't treat a gorgeous girl as some idol and fall over themselves with nerves, but as a person with interests and goals.
Now, if they're still in high school, then, well, you're best bet is to give them a makeover and tell them to get into any cliquey groups they can!
Their verdict: installation - excellent; OpenOffice - good enough; digital cameras, printers and other peripherals - excellent; CD burning - no problems; video playback - could be better (with more progress bars and support for Apple's formats); digital camcorders - poor; burning audio CDs - poor; Net access and Web browsing - no problems.
...trying to find a PC for sale that doesn't have Windows on it - problems...
For $18k, would you buy a dorky little plastic robot that can sense danger and then send you a text message, or would you hire someone to patrol your property while you weren't around?
Thank you slashdot for keeping me current with the absolute latest in trends.
Like so many people, I rely on the mighty Slashdot to stay current and wearing the coolest clothes, reading the coolest books, and now doing Movieoke to stay ahead of the all-important trend-waves that hit my area. I'm even considering subscribing so that I can get the scoop on what's cool before even the general crowd that frequents this site!
Thank you Slashdot for keeping me current with the latest, breaking trends. Without you, I would be, in a terribly uncool fashion I might add, persisting with Karaoke (god forbid!)...
That is, if my local, bland, conservative newspaper hadn't reported on Movieoke, oh, about three weeks ago!
I pity those sad fools only just looking for their local Movieoke bar while the hippest have moved on to the very latest thing -- Pornoke.
Stay tuned on Slashdot for more on Pornoke (in three weeks, of course) and jump on that bandwagon by the time the action has moved on elsewhere.
Probably Bali in Indonesia. I've been there twice and it's a very affordable destination with package deals always on offer.
I'm from Adelaide also, and Bali would be 5 hours. I'm flying to Singapore/Bangkok/Mumbai today and tomorrow and Singapore is a bit further than Bali at maybe 6 or 7 hours.
Anyway, I really don't think that geography is any excuse. There are a tonne of attractions within Australia for local travellers, and thousands of kilometres separating major cities (especially Adelaide) from the nearest foreign country but most people have learnt the basics in at least one language besides English.
I have a modded xbox that I can FTP to, running media players, picture viewers, snes emulators, the MAME gear with hundreds of arcade games, and a 120gig harddrive with about 30 games on it. I really don't know why anyone buys a PS2 or gamecube.

I was jailed last time I split an heir...
Since when has being informed mattered around here?
You're going easy on him. I suspect they've long been hidden away in his private collection... Hah!

The guy's father advised him against doing business with family... could that be a hint?
"Sorry son, but I'd fire you before I hired you!"
Hit their heaviest pages and drive up their traffic costs...

Oh come on, people are paying to see the Booth Babes. Everyone knows that...
Oh dear, who combs their hair these days!?

Christ, on some 56k dial-up plans Australians are charged AUD$140 (USD$100+) per GB. $10 would be fantastic!
And that's a 20GB allowance. Dial-up plans here these days have 200MB/month (!), and ADSL plans are often the same for the cheaper (AUD$30) plans.
If you were giving away 20GB for $30-40/month here, you'd have everyone buying into it.
Wow, between the scary Banryu dragon security robot and this scary issue of patents, much of the slashdot population seems to be absolutely terrified!
Either that, or quite inclined to over-use the word "scary"...

Micropayments for hookers?
Dude, speak for yourself...
No, remember, this is /. ...
Sorry about getting to the comments so late, but it's taken me all fucking morning to run off reading every link in the /. write-up...
