I'm from Australia which is entirely separated from any other country, yet that stands as absolutely no excuse here. Learning a language is compulsory for at least one year of high school. I learnt some Italian in primary school, then studied Mandarin for 3 years. My sister has studied Indonesian within her time at university.
I've just returned from 10 months abroad (Peru and Chile, maybe 10 countries in Europe, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, etc -- leaving for India in a week). The vast majority of Americans that we encountered were amazed that a variety of languages could be learnt by high school students (Greek, French, German, Italian, Farsi, Mandarin, Japanese at my high school 10 years ago).
That said, almost all younger Americans we met did make the effort to pick up small amounts of foreign languages when abroad -- especially Spanish which I understand is an option at US high schools?
I've just returned from a 10-month trip that included China (which I've been to before) and Vietnam (plus maybe 20 other countries). These are two heavily-populated regions, both with a very low cost of living.
IT workers in either country (Vietnam will rise within the world IT market soon) need not demand salaries akin to those seen in the US because they live for a slender fraction of the cost.
Average salary in Cambodia (somewhere I found more expensive than Vietnam!) is US$30... a *month*. Many people (no, not all, but a reasonable number) can live satisfactorily on this wage. If you've been to Vietnam and thought it was cheap, consider that the locals get airline/train/bus tickets at 15-25% of what you pay. And the prices on food are lower also.
The people of these countries will never need to demand salaries like those you are used to. Your jobs will shift...
US car companies are now purchasing substantial amounts of car components from China, and will eventually shift entire manufacturing/assembling plants there. I don't think that you can compete in many of these markets.
Sure, companies with a reputation of quality or must-have-style will remain strong, but China is growing at a remarkable pace.

Google logs indicate Linux users at around 1%. And that's the search engine favoured by almost any geek out there -- a crowd that would feature more than its fair share of Linux users.
I really don't think that 20% is at all likely, even within 5 years. Apple won't even get to that level.
Well, I guess that we won't be permitted to have cell/mobile phones on flights any more...
Just imagine:
*takes phone up to stewardess*
"Back off everyone, I've been on the phone for 19 minutes and the thing will blow at any second. Everyone get on the floor, and I want this plane flown to, err, hmm... Sweden!"
I think you're comparing a timeline-based animation tool to an image-manipulation program with just-added SVG support.
Flash is in a very dominant position, known and recognised, with stronger database and usability features are being added with each release. It will not be caught now.
Wow, what a revenge! This has all the exciting hallmarks of the most boring story in the world. He shut down a single ISP account. I'm stunned!
I hope the author isn't holding out for a script-writing deal for anything starring Chuck Norris or Lorenzo Lamas. It's hardly going to get rapped about by Dre, is it?
Hey, stop saying "userland". Dave Winer might get excited, and I wouldn't want to be sitting in front of him at bloggercon if Dave Winer got too excited...
Very neat. This basically sets up a parallel web of info spaces, where http/DNS space is just one of many, and anyone can register their namespace 'domain'. Way cool!!
Err, things haven't been way cool!! since the Eighties...
Isn't our industry trying to propel mankind into the future? Forwards is that way...
'They told me that the wireless gear wouldn't talk to the modem, they told me that my Debian workstation wouldn't be supported, they told me that the BOC wouldn't talk to me, they told me that I needed training, they told me that it wasn't done and it wouldn't work, they told me that I'd void my warranty, they told me so many stories..'
He's been told a lot of things, but did anyone tell him that divorce is imminent?
They told me that the wireless gear wouldn't talk to the modem, that my wife wouldn't talk to me...
That's all very well, but what about the question the rest of us have for the apple-fearing geeks? What's so terrifying about a portion of fruit? Who's going to answer that, eh?
All I'm saying is that any mild announcement of a processor upgrade gets submitted and approved on slashdot.
The launch of iTunes, or of the iPod is News for Nerds, but an announcement of the iPod going from 10gig to 20gig shouldn't make the frontdoor, IMO, and that's what's tending to happen.
This isn't Mac vs PC. This is advertising as content, and not many people seem to have a problem with it...
Oh well.
(It's not restricted to the Apple section either; that's just where it's most obvious).

My favourite online cartoon is Achewood:

Read it through. How can anyone not love Philippe, the lactose-intolerant otter?

Gee, I'll bet there's a study out there showing that using two hands increases productivity too.

From Artist to Spam-Hunter to zzz...
Dude (and yes, I think that's made a comeback), we're talking about 'way cool' instead of simply 'cool'...
:)
I was nit-picking for humour, so, who cares.
Err, if you want a really cool screensaver, look out a window -- wind effects, sky, clouds -- all in real-time. Amazing, and not $17m!
I think you're assuming that I
what you're talking about.

Because the government is virtually owned by big-business.
Vote how? They will own the voting process...
It's a downward spiral.

$50 says Dave Winer is pissed off that he didn't get mentioned in this write-up...
Double that if I do a gleeful dance when it turns out that he is. Weeee!
In other news, sales of miniature walking frames and tiny bi-focals are booming...

News for nerds, or advertising opportunities for big corporations?
Everytime Apple scratches their butt, slashdot.org approves someones ravenously excited submission regarding the fact.
I'm all for posting pieces when major advances in technology are made, but what's next?
Dell makes 80gig standard in Inspiron 8500 instead of 60gig?
Come on...Is it simply that the site is US-centric, or are either of the following true:
(a) US is censoring more important stories than other countries
(b) US is involved in more issues than other countries
?
With R.Kelly and the RIAA on the loose, young girls need to watch out!
No, no, no. It's a million monkeys typing on a million typewriters that you use to reproduce eBooks, not a million monks.
That said, I've had luck finding monks on google:
