A decision by a French Court in favor of an American company, King Features Syndicate, against Mandrake, for using an English word that just happends to also be a name for a comic strip is stupid and I stand by that assertion;).
For instance if Mandrake had been named Beetle (a la Beetle Bailey, another King Features Syndicate comic) would a lawsuit in any country where English is not the primary language be fair and just?
Again I reiterate I know this is a French court and I know nothing of French trademark law, as such my judgement of stupidity is based on the lack of common sense present in the decision.
A southern European plant (Mandragora officinarum) having greenish-yellow flowers and a branched root. This plant was once believed to have magical powers because its root resembles the human body.
The root of this plant, which contains the poisonous alkaloid hyoscyamine. Also called mandragora.
Granted I know nothing of copyright law in France: but wouldn't this case also be related to that old decision between Apple Computer and Apple Record Company? Two separate buisinesses could both hold the same trademark in different arenas. Also it involves trademarking a common word such as the current lawsuit between Microsoft and Lindows.
All in all it seems like a pretty stupid decision by the Court.
I agree, and I believe the US armed forces are doing far more training about dealing with civilians and peacekeeping roles than ever before. Recently I was watching a show on the Op(osing) Force simulations the US Army runs at Fort Bragg, California, they went so far as to hire civilain role players that would react to how the military was interacting with them with either help or terrorist attacks.
Training can only help so much though, and even trained police have problems dealing with suicide attacks on checkpoints.
But all of this is somewhat beside the topic. DARPA is an Advanced Research Projects Agency. Their job and charter is not the social interactions of our military but rather making sure that the US retains their technological edge by funding research in to technology that has the potential to revolutionize war. It is an exciting and scarey at the same time field. But it is not an either or proposition with reguards to training soldiers to be better peacekeepers. Even if the US military never uses performance enhancing drugs they would still want to know about them in order to deal with oppponents who would use them.
" Teach them how to maintain peace, not war." and you have no need to maintain peace because you just *lost* the war. Instead:
Teach them to win a war, and maintain the peace thereafter.

Must we make a law for everything just so people can get a warm fuzzy? Take some responsibilty for your actions, exercise a degree of intelligence and dispose of sensitive information or incriminating evidence correctly. It is not the place of a law to protect criminals from their own stupidity.
Why should we have an expectation for privacy in our trash (once it is placed for collection) ?
Heck the article in Willamette Week Online just tells a story of some incredibly stupid public officials. They should politely thank the journalists for showing them they need to be a bit more careful in how they dispose of sensitive information. After all a person interested in stealing your credit card number from the trash is not going to be scruplusly following the law on the privacy of trash. Also I would think common sense would dictate that you better have more evidence than a joint in the trash to imply someone uses drugs, any passer by, trespasser, or even visitor can easily discard material in an innocent's trash.
You are not "paying" twice for the same game. In a reasonably well done MMORPG the montly fee pays for the full time staff that is working on the next monthly update. Asheron's Call for example featured:
A new town.
A family of player crafted items.
2 new quests and several updated old quests.
An invasion of a town with several developer controlled raids in the rest of the world.
An additional type of armor.
And miscellanious other updates.
I am fairly certain FFXI would offer a comparable value each month.
Not to say that this type of game appeals to everyone. But it really is a different beast from Diablo II. Much more work is required to maintain and update a dynamic world than a series of bnet servers.
I beleive USB 1.1 supports a rate of 12MB/s so it looks anything more (like the 480MB/s of USB 2) wouldn't really help you.
I tend to like compact flash the best of any of the competeing memory standards currently. Once you get that small size doesnt really matter that much to me. It is definitly the cheapest, available in the largest sizes, and from everything I have heard it is by far the most durable.
point taken. They definitly should have made an effort to notify those who may have have had personal information comprimised. Even if the only thing they could do was post a notice on their website and in the store(s) effected (I imagine trying to personally track down each person who used the computers in the past 2 years would be somewhat impossible).
Apologies for my kneejerk reaction to the word lawsuit whenever I hear that word I start frothing at the mouth a bit thinking of some of the really dumb ones that happen.
Please tell me you are not just looking for a class action lawsuit because you smell easy money.
Take some responsibility for you own actions and think this through. Were you actually harmed by this? If not what makes you think you are entitled to compensation? Do not say emotional distress please or try the RIAA method of valuation inflation. If you were harmed by this then read all the other comments here about being smart with your sensitive information. Then decide if Kinkos is responsible for loss or just another victim.
The system is screwed up enough with all the lawsuits flying back and forth, save them for when you really need it.
Seriously, what would you do with 17,000 PlayStations?
Well like any other thief I would probably sell them and buy.....
Among the items being sought for forfeiture are a residence, two Mercedes, three Lexus vehicles and a Cadillac, in addition to $142,500 in cash seized during execution of search warrants.
I hear with $142,500 you can build a pretty mean beowulf cluster;).
I'd like to take this moment to direct attention to the fact this is an AIRCRAFT Carrier. I highly doubt they will put a simple "gun" on one of those. Other naval ships would serve the purpose just as well or better. If it is going in a nuclear powered aircraft carrier with additional nuclear capacity dedicated towards it you better believe there is a good reason for it.
Another thing; why on earth would a conventional gun need a nuclear reactor to support it?
No, the AC who also responded was correct, Directed Energy is not just a fancy term for a simple explosive or kinetic energy shell. DE implies a laser or other EM type weapon. It couldn't it could even be properly applied to a railgun
Copyright violation and stealing are different. In any event this time they are going after the "sharer" not the downloaders I believe. It is much easier to prove sharing that it is to prove downloading. And while there is the possibility for legitimate downloading (if not legally then morally) there is less for actually sharing files.
That said the whole idea of "damages" in a non-commercial case of copyright violation is ludicrous. It should be punished by a set fine or a severity gradation fine. Estimateing damages is a farce and ripe for abuse.
It has a nice web based email system. You can check your email with IMAP or POP (pop only with paid accounts). Flexible filtering. You can create + addresses ie your address is myself@fastmail.fm you can give that iffy site myself+iffysite@fastmail.fm and then write a filter to direct all mail sent to that address to a specific folder. Paid accounts also get subdomain addressing, ie anything@myself.fastmail.fm goes to your account. All in all I have been very happy with their service and features. Oh and it can check hotmail accounts;).
Rebates basically do not exist for them. The Price is what it is. When I was younger though the would let me convince them to buy the rebated items if it was a better price and then let me fill out the form and collect the money (which I got to keep). It was a nice addition to my spending money and provides a nice precursor to dealing with bills. Ie fill out the things correctly, do it on time, keep track of the amounts.
If and When I have old enough kids I plan on never filling out another rebate form again. It will become part of their chores.;)
Is sending a missle running GPL'ed software considered "distribution?" Could the victim of a missle attack request the source code?
(Then again, if you're already war, going to court over a licensing agreement might not matter too much.)
Just include a copy of the source code in a ROM embedded in the explosives.
In reality I wouldnt think that would fall under the definintion of distribution. Furthermore this is under the BSD license not the GPL so the issue is moot.
Joy and suffering are the underlying factors. I would not say they are ignored by Greenspan, but professionally he deals with a higher level goal. Specifically, maximizing economic growth is the objective defined by Greenspan's job. It is unfair to assume he will or is expected to pursue this objective at all costs.
While a fast-growing economy may not guarantee a "best society", the converse is not true either. A pragmatic approach might come to the conclusion that a fast growing economy in general leads to a better society, and is thus a worthy goal.
I hope that attempted explanation makes sense. I am off to go look up the definition of apoplectic now.
I thought the inside of the CRT looked more like a speaker, with a big magnet and a speaker-cone shape coming off of it going to the glass.
Except for the fact the entire assembly is rigid, unmovable, and utterly incapable of functioning as a speaker.
It is not an issue of looking like a speaker, but rather being able to move in such a way to produce a compression wave in the air.
Electrostatic speakers use an electric field to move a membrane. Apparently this can be accomplished by using the membrane of an lcd, although the small size would limit the range and quality of the sound. Also I imagine the effects of a vibrating visual display would run contrary to the desire for a stable-nonflicking presentation.

Serves me right for trusting advertisers of Flash Card readers to not substitute MB for Mb.
USB 2 would be a substantial improvment.
Flash chip technology advances have allowed flash chips to achieve sustained data transfer rates of 5-7MB/sec
