The pay seems...sucky, but I guess the service isn't very long and you get to lea.
Strong defense is very important, but some of the most powerful militaries in the world are entirley volunteer (The US, UK), but the Largest Militaries in the world are Conscript (China and I think India)
"And really, isn't this 72 virgins thing just a little overrated? I mean, after three or four, doesn't the thrill kind of wear off? And by Virgin 23, you're going to be begging for a pro, someone who knows when and when not to use their teeth."
Outdoor stuff is great and interesting. I just don't see the advantage for forcing everyone to be a conscript unless there is a DIRE need. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy and learn survival skills and enjoy the harsh, cold outdoors.
I was also wondering, what the compensation for the required tour of duty is./me tired too
The libraries that the next OS X (Tiger is shipping) can be use the GPU for ANY graphical effects. Since the GPU kicks any other Floating Point processor in exsistance, it means anything, not just the GUI can be faster (Photoshop). It can, in real time, apply video filters to High Def DV streams, using the Video cards GPU, which is pretty cool.
Also, the new 30" have a resolution of 2560 x 1600 with is only about 4 million pixels. There is really no video card (Or connection interface for that matter) that can run that many pixels. Which is why they need a decked out video card which actually has dual connections for the 30" Display, so there is enough bandwidth to use it.
Backwards compatiblity isn't that big of an issue. PCI-Express is slated to remove the need for other PCI and the awful AGP.
CNR failed because it wasn't very useful. All you could do is put a limited device in it (i.e. modem) and if you already a PCI, Serial or ISA modem there was no reason at all to get move to CNR.
PCI-Express has a lot of potential and can easily be the end all interface for you cards for years to come. It is very fast, very low latency and more importantly it can the ONLY interface on every board that you'd ever need.
Embrace this change, it will make the world a better place. I also think it could be a better place of PCs finally got rid of PS/2 and parallel ports, but they just recently got rid of ISA so I'm not going to hold my breath.
Would it open them to the military justice system?
While I know the Coast is just like every other governemnt agency, I know they haven't operated under the DoD for 40 years and just recently got roled into the Department of Homeland Security. Would it really open them up to the Military Justice Sytem or just a big bureucratic mess.
This just a case of stupid filtering gone wrong because keywords aren't good for filtering. Keywords are stupid because things that aren't PORNographic GAY PICs with homoSEXual and biSEXual same-SEX COUPLES will be filtered because they are "naughty" words that a lot of PORN sites use to get peoples attention. The same filter would apply to a church fighting GAY and LESBIAN same-SEX COUPLE from getting married. It isn't a personal call by George BUSH or DICK Chenny to put the GAY person down.
Remove the tinfoil hat, and then view the world with a touch of cynicism. It will lengthen your life span.
This is something that has bothered me for quite sometime. If the CD was purchased and then shared. How is the sharer committing copyright infringement. The property is there, and there is NO money changing hands. Perhaps I just need a swift kick to understand.
I'm not quite a Macophite yet, but for throughput Apple has been thinking ahead. Since the Beige G3 Apple has had 64-bit PCI slots and the latest release of the G5 has PCI-X. Also for about 3 years almost every machine has come standard with Gigabit Ethernet. While the bottle neck is really not the networking, it is something I can't even find on any home machine from any of the computer companys.
I would agree with many previous posts about Gigabit having no real purpose at home yet. But I when they do have a purpose and a need I'm certian I'll still have a PS2 port and 32-bit PCI.
Is this really unexpected? Someone made a virus and threw out some bait and the BBC bit. They won't be the last, I'd expect to see something like this in the New York Times.
This reminds me of regular reporters to medical news. They might be the best reporters in the world, but it is still miss informed and sometimes just plain wrong. It isn't necessarily their fault, they just don't know what they are covering and are forced to regurgitate what info they hear first, and loudest.
PS... If an GNU/OSS lackey did this may they burn in SCO for the annoyance they've caused, you would have been better picking on Microsoft

The ladder is correct...sort of.

Seriously, everything you found interesting is covered in basic Boy Scout material minus being a conscript. (Do you get paid?)
First thing to come to mind
I think bio-diesel has been around.....since the first diesel engine. Petroluim is just cheaper and there is more of it around.

I think the answer you seek is here
I've seen Post-it notes on a CEO's laptop screen.
I then realized why someone would use Macintosh Stickies.
As for as I can remember Prelinking has been part of Darwin/OS X for quite sometime.
Not a Macophile just an observation.
Microsoft Optical Mice are a weird breed of mice. In OS X they require a mouse driver. IT IS A FRICKEN POINTING DEVICE!@!@
OpenFirmware. Seriously, its be tested tride and true.

If I recall correctly, the United States spent 750 billion dollars on education in 2002. That isn't any where near the defense budget.

Social conspiracy is silly.

How? Am I confused by think of organised crime like the New York or Russian Maffia.
As relfected in previous posts, it looks like slashdot is becoming more Freshmeat.net with each passing day. Then again, it is news for nerds.
Just my two cents
When I read that, I had visions of Wirt the peg-legged boy.

Agree'd, when I read this I thought...
"Simpsons canceled, Family Guy takes time slot"
It's true! I don't spell check
You don't need pain killers. You'll passout from the pain before too long.
