Immersion, upon winning a lawsuit regarding force feedback, finds itself the target of a MASSIVE class action lawsuit after a Slashdot article brought this stirring subject to the attention of soccer moms and disco dads all across the world.
What happens when some script kiddie gets access to your pool's box and raises the acid content so much that everytime you go for a swim, you come out missing 3 layers of skin.
Or some chemist hacker figures out a way to add "pee" to your pool by modifying what chemicals the program puts out.
It's his to the extent that he's the one who made it famous by taking 10 grand and turning it into 20 million in revenues.
He left when he had a fight with the VCs about the companies direction.
I went to the site, and they weren't selling items, they were selling gold (atleast for DAoC). Mythic could quickly put them out of business by just doing a quick jump in the amount of available gold in game, then people wouldn't feel like they need to pay more for what they should be getting on their own.
Mythic just needs to exert the power they control over supply and demand.
Maybe I shouldn't troll, but I consider this a silly idea. Internet is a basic right on the level of shelter and food? What about phones? Are they a basic right? No, not even close. What about television? Again, no. What you see on TV is for the most part only there because an advertiser paid a network exec for time. What about electricity? Basic right? No, I still get an electric bill every month, and they don't hesitate to turn it off if I miss a payment.
The person who dubs the internet as any sort of "basic right" probably needs to go without for a few months just so you will find that yes, you can survive without internet access. The internet in no way affects your quality of life.
The fact that microsoft encrypted the bios and obfuscated everything has made it alot more difficult to get a foot in the door, but once the hardware hackers get past that, porting the code over will be childs play.
I can see wealthy jewelry aficionados buying this magazine and wondering why there aren't any pictures of pearls, and why people keep misspelling "pearl".
Obviously your math needs a little work too. New Doom; 250k polys, Quake3; 10k polys. that's 25 times the number of polygons. If they do that with the next engine, their next game will have images comprised of 6,250,000 polys. See how it works?
Granted, I'm not saying that will happen, but it could.
Emusic lets you pay around $9.99 a month (if you sign up for 12 months) to download unlimited mp3s. Granted, I don't know what kind of speed you get from EMusic, but this is a very worthwhile purchase in my opinion. They also have the bands that I was looking for, even the slightly rare ones like Opeth, and Therion.
Great news Microsoft Engineers! After our month of hardwork, we estimate that we fixed over 1 million bugs! Of course, the downside is that we introduced upwards of 2 million NEW bugs, but hey, that's what upgrading is for! This is all possible thanks to you!
Our approach is to rise above the traditional reactive e-mail filters and identify the good (e-mails) so they can be elevated," Schiavone said. "It benefits everybody along the e-mail chain. Senders agree to abide by the privacy principles independently verified by Truste. They have agreed to make themselves accountable to consumers."
It benefits everyone except for whoever didn't solicit the email. The only good thing is that the end user will be able to filter it a bit easier than normal spam, but it is still spam nonetheless, a digital signature doesn't change that.
Since they are being so "helpful" with the digital signature, why not also include a helpful link like "click here to sue this spammer for unsolicited email". Then they would offer you free legal counsel, and immediately settle out of court with you for some unmentioned amount. Sounds good to me.
Another thought, since this is now being done at the ISP level, if you are in a state that supports anti-spam laws, are you able to use your ISP too?
I wonder what Trillian and all of the other programs who ride for free on AOL's network do to the advertising fees AOL gets.
I mean, think about it, if 1million people are using Trillian, that's probably 1million people who aren't seeing AOL's built-in AIM ads, and that would probably throw off their selling points. Maybe a solve for this would be for trillian to implement AOL's ads? (of course ads do suck, but maybe that would be a compromise that AOL could live with?)
Out of curiosity, what would happen if someone were to go to this airport and pull off some major hack, like gaining access to some.mil computer and downloading lots of top secret documents?
The anonymity would be a huge reason to go there, free is just a bonus. Tracking the person would be pretty much impossible as the airport probably gets a TON of human traffic everyday (I'm not sure if that airport is an Airline Hub or not). Are there any measures that can(should?) be taken to ensure that the network won't be misused?
[sacrasm]After all, it's not RedHat, or Debian, or Slackware (one of the good distros). [/sarcasm]
All kidding aside, this article is also good for a good "my distro is better than yours" flamewar, a nice discussion about how Mandrake has come along way and how the 8.2beta shows it, how a 65mb install really is a good thing. C'mon, if it didn't mean anything to you, why post?
And as for not allowing any comments on an announcement, how else would you see other people's (often insightful) reactions to the announcement?
Maybe it's because all of your posts are by default at -1 ? That happens when you have negative karma, and I would imagine that negative karma affects metamoderation too.
I didn't know what RMS looked like until I read his article (his picture is up at the top right). I can really only say one thing; RMS, the 70s called, they want their shirt back. heh.
200+ hours to beat Baldurs Gate 2? Are you smoking crack? More like 40 hours if you take your time. I first beat the game in about 2 weeks, in about 3 hours a day (sometimes more, sometimes less).
And its not like you have to beat it in one session, save your game and get back to it later! It has a journal so you know where you are in the game, lest you forget.
The Baldurs Gate series is overflowing with content. The very storyline is shaped by your character (the answers to the questions you are asked, your alignment, your character's class). How is that linear? Granted, there are usually only 2 endings, but how you get there is pretty much up to you.
Baldurs Gate 2 was an even bigger addition to the Baldurs Gate series, with a huge map of places to go, extended (and interesting!) storyline that never seems to end. I can honestly say that I haven't enjoyed another PC RPG as much as I've enjoyed playing through the Baldurs Gate world.
Last, Baldurs Gate 2 has probably well over a 500 individual npcs, all with their own likes and dislikes.
Combine all of that with the beautifully rendered maps, well voiced (and amusing!) dialog, and very easy to use interface, and you will see that Bioware is an industry leader for a reason.
As for not finding some parts of the code, simply provide a court order to one of the universities who already have it.

It's a little more indepth than the India times article.

Just food for thought. ;)

Maybe this will be locked down to port 80 only?

If you don't have negative karma, who knows.
You may try logging out, and logging back in again, or if that fails, send CmdrTaco an email about it.

Imagine how the people who get Slashdotted feel ;)
C'mon, who still watches TV? I'm too busy refreshing Slashdot.
