Are you willing to pay higher taxes, and higher prices on things you buy? Because that's what has to happen. If businesses pay higher wages, they will pass the cost on to you. I agree that people should be paid a living wage, but that money has to come from somewhere.
I have to agree with you. We could argue about him all day, whether he was successful or not. All you need to know if who was CEO when Nokia tanked. Last time I looked that person was Elop. And now they want to bring him to Microsoft?
Do you actually work as a project manager? I do. Try executing your idea in an average company and see how far you get. Good luck getting only "smart, talented, dedicated" individuals for your project! Even those employees will have character flaws, personality conflicts or other reasons that prevent the project from succeeding.
I hope the guy doesn't profit from this fraud. Most likely his startup will get acquired, if it really exists, or he will get a job in a more prestigious firm. Hey, there is no true and false anymore, right? What I really hope is that he goes back to the oblivion where he belongs.
I tried to volunteer with Big Brothers in the 90's. They rejected my application. I've always been convinced that I was turned down because I was open with them that I was gay. I'm convinced it was because they associated being gay with being a pedophile.
I consider myself a cynic, but I teared up when I read about your plans to honor your grandmother. I think you should do it. It's a simple, harmless way to show your affection for her. It doesn't harm anyone or anything but it allows you to respect her memory.
It's disappointing that Romney couldn't find a diversity candidate, a woman, African-American, Latino etc. How does he expect to beat Obama in the election with this ticket? Saying the economy is terrible isn't enough.
For those that wonder how this article got on the front page, remember it's News for nerds, stuff that matters. I think a presidential election is something that matters.
Yes I miss it too. I'm across the country now and there is nothing like Weirdstuff or Fry's around here in North Carolina. I used to go to Weirdstuff and just browse. A lot of times I wouldn't buy something but every so often you'd find something really neat. It was fun looking at all the old tech, old Apple II's, IRIX workstations, etc.
I've worked in several startup companies that grew quickly. You can't *make* people want to get to know each other or spend more time together. You're fighting the natural changes that happen when a company starts getting bigger. Implementing technology will not solve the problem you're trying to address. If you really want people to know each other and interact, then find ways for them to spend face time with each other. Host parties, organize events at local bars, have some group lunches, etc.
I'm sorry, but it's this kind of apathy that allows these things to happen. People that say "voting won't work" or "why should I get involved" should not be surprised when their government requires fingerprints for travel, puts insecure chips in their passports or uses their country's telecommunications companies to spy on them.
Some generations have stood up against their government and protested (remember the Boston Tea Party, remember the 1960's?). If you don't like the current system, do something about it!
I have 10 years experience in IT. I'm now in the MBA program at the University of Oregon. It's something I wanted to do 10 years ago but put off. I'd highly recommend considering this. It will give you opportunities to explore career paths such as Finance, Marketing etc. Doing an internship between the two years of the program will give you great experience, and will let you explore other career options in a safe environment.
As long as you ask for bottled water. Some airlines may have fixed the problems with poor water quality, but as recently as 2005 there were known problems.

It's easy to make Solaris crash. Just log in as root and fill up the root filesystem. I've seen this happen on Solaris machines before, and just had this happen on a test box at home.
On Linux I can get to 100% full / with 0 blocks available and the system stays up. On Solaris the system grinds to a halt and becomes unresponsive.
I love Solaris, but I find it incredible in this day and age that I can bring a Solaris box down (accidentally!) and that the OS doesn't have some protection from stupid mistakes. Why can't Solaris protect me from myself?
We will be charging only $14.95 for this to cover our cost of development, plus ongoing development as well as marketing costs.
So, they are still trying to "sell" this and now we're back to square one. Yes, the GPL allows charging fees for distribution but it seems like they are just continuing the scam. Charging $15 instead of $50 or $100 for a product you didn't write is still fraud.
Yes! The old D-Link DI-704P Revision A1 is a NAT/Firewall device that supports dial up connections. I believe the newer versions dropped the serial modem support. The A1 is a dark brown case and there will be a sticker on the bottom with the version (A, B or C). The newer B and C revisions are in silver cases.
I bought it specifically because of the modem support. Most of the home firewall boxes I saw only had support for DSL or cable modem (ethernet). I was using this with a dial up account for more than a year. The box has autoreconnect support so it will dial up occasionally if your line drops or it detects new outbound activity.
The one I have is the original version A1. You could probably find those on eBay.
Whoever moderated the parent as a troll post obviously has never surfed! He actually makes some valid points. (And if you look at his past posts, you'll see he's not one to troll.)
1) Assumes the ocean will be choppy. This does happen, but you won't be using the board in those conditions. Assume a decent summer day at a beach break with glassy conditions.
2) Very valid point. Happens sometimes if you do any kind of serious surfing.
3) Could happen anyway. Regular fiberglass and epoxy boards break.
OK, so I'll admit, the board is kind of cool. I am tempted to run right out and buy one from my local Fry's Electronics store.;-) However, there are some problems with the initial design and function that I can see.
While this board is really cool for taking shots _from_ the surfboard, traditional surf photography focuses on getting pics of the surfer on the wave, not taking boring pictures of what's directly ahead of the surfer. Even if it is a performance longboard it's probably never going to get barreled which is the only time you'd want to have pics taken from the board's perspective. If they could fit this equipment into a shortboard, then it would be cool to have pics of the wave as you're getting tucked into a barrel.
Also look at the pic of the board in use. Surfers usually sit closer to the middle of the board when waiting for a wave. If that's where the screen is, it's going to get a lot of abuse. You don't see surfers sitting way back on their boards, but maybe this will start a new fashion statement.
I'm assuming this is a performance longboard, which means it will turn from the tail. However, I bet someone will try to noseride it and hang ten or hang five. How will that touchscreen hold up to a 150 lb person walking back and forth on the screen?
Who will repair the board when needed? Depending on materials or location of a ding, your local ding repair guy or gal could make repairs. However, what happens when the integrity of the computing system is affected? The whole system is waterproof, but what if you have a repair that's near the screen or the rest of the components? Do you just use normal resin and hope it doesn't melt the plastic waterproof casing of the electronic components? I can't imagine that Intel is going to start doing surfboard repairs!
I know where you're coming from, but I think I've got you beat on the slacker front.:-P
I've taken two and a half years off to recover from an intense three year and a half year job at a startup as their IT problem solver/system admin. After you work 12-18 hour days for months at a time it really gets to you. It was a great opportunity but boy was I burned out. I was glad when the company finally started downsizing in late 2001, and they laid me off.
Of course, it makes it easier to take time off knowing that the job market is so bad. The sad thing is that just before leaving my last job I was working on a certificate in Java programming at a local University of California extension program. This is after doing a B.S. in Theoretical Computer Science back in college. So, of course, companies start outsourcing entry level programming jobs the day after I finish my Java program. Doh!:-O
I've recently started sending out a few resumes, but I'm not getting much of a response yet. If anyone needs a problem solver with Unix and Windows sys admin experience, I'm available!!;-)
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned CheckIt Diagnostics from Smith Micro Software (http://www.smithmicro.com). You will find it on their website listed under the Utilities section. CheckIt Diagnostics only costs $70. I bought my copy at a local computer store a few years ago.
What I like about it is that in the same box you get both a version that boots and runs from a single DOS boot floppy, as well as a Windows version on a CD ROM. I almost never use the Windows version because the DOS version is very comprehensive. The only complaint I have is that I can't find a way in the DOS version to make the diagnostics run "n" number of times. Their memory test is very thorough, but I'd like to leave the whole thing running for a few days. Maybe they've corrected that in newer versions?
They don't have an eval version on their web site, but maybe you can contact their sales department about getting one. Please note that they now have a product called CheckIt86 which has nothing to do with the DOS version (e.g. 8086) but is an ad-blocker.
Obviously Google would never do something like this /sarcasm

If you want the site to look like Digg, maybe you should just buy it.
How much did that CTO pay for his spot? He was really that much better than 6,000 other people?

What is the definition of extortion, Alex?
I know that Hurd has been in development a long time. I'm surprised that they still don't have SATA drivers.

Oh, please. Give me a break. Virtually all child pornography involves exploitation of a child. How can anyone say that this should be legalized?

So, we should all just roll over and give in to any abuse of power? What an unbelievable attitude!
