How will schools manipulate women and girls info CS rather than biology or chemistry in order to get more money for teachers. Will girl computer scientists be worth more to an employer than boys? I know that there are those out there who refuse to believe that some people have innate talents and everything is nurture and not nature - but coercing girls intoa field to get more money for teachers will result in a lot of unhappy coders who might have been happy architects or MDs - or even (gasp) writers or artists.
Rather than making flying as easy as boarding a train the govt would make boarding a train as bad as boarding a plane. The appeal of Amtrak from Boston to points south and west is lower cost and less humiliation.
More evidence on how consumers are willing to accept lower standards in their media. "News" programs invite views to submit their video and pictures for broadcast. This means cell quality images and even worse sound. Yet we accept it. Yes iPhones take decent pictures for personal use and Facebook, but do we really want history recorded with a cheap lens and someone who has no natural talent for composing a shot. I can't wait to see pictures of the president, Prime Minister of England and the PM of Canada posing huddled close together with their heads leaning into each other like a sorority reunion in a bar.
It seems like every Sears and KMart I've ever been in while there was heavy rain showed leaks in the roof. Unless they plan on using that as auxiliary cooling I sure hope the structures are carefully evaluated prior to putting infrastructure in.
While I understand the motivation, this will backfire. How will a little guy be able to pay the bill when he or she has to sue IBM or Ford for a patent infringement. A new troll will develop. One who will pay for the legal fees in exchange for a modest percentage of the profits. And with an endless appeals process - that could end up in the millions.
Ramping up production in the US is more of a political issue than a technical one. You have to hire employees, which in certain heavily unionized states, is closer to adopting them. You have to file environmental impact statements on every aspect of the project, including truck traffic to and from your site. Approvals need to be obtained from local, state and federal agencies all of which operate at their own pace. By the time this is done, your Asian and even your EU competition has beaten you to the punch.
I would rather see the jobs here, but I sort of understand the pressure the companies are under.
I think I would rather not have my life recorded. There are moments that I'm glad fade with time, the death of a loved one, that first traumatic break up, the work screw up that cost you your job.
I kind of like the fact that in my memories I was not that awkward as a teen, that I was a better athlete and student. Call it repression, but I think Im better off.
The moments that I want to remember, graduation, getting married and those special vacations are all recorded enough for me.
Besides there are two downsides I can think of. The first is, what if your prom date doesn't want that backseat encounter taped and the second is imagine when meeting someone for the first time, they don't tell you about themselves over dinner, you have to sit an watch the last three years.
You want a record, keep a journal with photos or short videos - leave the documentaries to someone else.
Unless this is an informal meet the potential boss it may be a mistake. Companies seem to feel that anyone can conduct an interview but not everyone can. You should be trained by your company in the rules and laws regarding interviewing. Even an innocuous question like "So, do you have any kids?" - meant to break the ice - could be used in a lawsuit if someone feels their having or not having kids was a reason for not getting the job.
You should also be trained on the company's policy for interviewing.
Lack of interview training could also cause you to pass over a really good candidate because YOU failed to ask the right questions.
Not long ago I ran into a man who was a teacher of mine many years ago. He is now an education professor. He thinks that the schools are focused on the wrong issues. He says we need better teachers, more accountability and a more challenging curriculum. The length of the school year or the length of the school day is not relevant. He still backs summer vacations.
Just another political sop to try to keep the support of public unions. Obama's proposal is just more of the hot button words strung together to get votes. If he is re-elected and this doesn't go through - he will blame others. If it goes through - what happens when the money runs out? The local school systems have to pick up the burden,
You want to improve education? Then educate. Stop with all the self-esteem oriented programs and stop having special programs to prevent dropping out. Spend the money on real motivated students. You can have a night school, like Conway NH's Eagle Academy, to give the dropouts a way back in when they realize that $12 an hour job is not nearly as sweet as they thought it would be.
I would be amazed if civilization endures in 10000 years AND English has been lost.
What they call English in even a thousand years may not have a lot in common with what we call English. Remember your first attempt at reading Shakespeare, never mind Chaucer. Pictures may be best. As was said a skull may mean nothing. Especially if the finder is non human. They may not have skulls.
One question before we make this a federal case for some congressmen to get cheap publicity, how often has this happened? Are going on a couple of anecdotes about over zealous recruiters or is this now in the HR manual of cliches along with "Where do you see yourself in five years?"
A few years ago I went to Best Buy because they had a good deal on laptops and I needed one for a very particular function. Before I left they opened the box and and turned on the machine. At the time they had a policy of a restocking fee for opened boxes. They told me this after I purchased the laptop. It turns out I did not need the laptop so I tried to return it and argued that BEST BUY opened the box. I could not have returned it without the fee even if I never left the store. They eventually relented and refunded the fee and started posting very large signs with the return policy. Moral of the story -- if they open the box before you leave get the manager's name and promise that they will give full refunds.
As usual Gartner is behind the curve. I saw evidence of consumerism 30 years ago when a couple of "rogue traders" in the Boston office of Merrill Lynch Capital Markets brought couple of Apple II computers into the office to track data with a database application that IT, then DP, said they would get to in the next two years. They used an acoustic coupler modem to get mainframe data that the mainframe thought it was sending to a terminal/printer. Fast forward to 2011 and we have people at large companies doing their own off-site data back ups because IT's solution is clumsy and lacks full redundancy. The trick is to make IT think it's their idea. And the trick for Gartner is to make IT management think Gartner predicted it.
Being from the same state that produced John Adams, John Hancock and Paul Revere it is so hard to believe that this is happening and Massachusetts is at the heart of it.
Lee Iacocca wrote in his first book about bean counters destroying the US auto industry. On the other hand some pretty good personal computers failed in the marketplace because the engineers could not market to the consumers. The answer lies in a mix of talents and not one group holding the other in contempt.
Anyone else find it troublesome that Bezos is putting $42M into THIS? Or more troublesome still, that Bezos HAS $42M. Or that he has $42M to THROW at anything?
At 4% that money could generate $1,680,000 per year for scholarships, or school renovations, health education or or or or or.
*sigh*
I'm not troubled by this at all. That's $42,000,000 to pay the suppliers, designers and builders. The money will pay their mortgages, buy their food and educate their children. Maybe the immediate push into the economy doesn't sound as noble as a scholarship fund but it will keep a lot of people employed.
Actually, you can hurt people with data. Mainly, people in power. And that's what they're afraid of.
Before the kill switch goes in -- We need to work with amatuer radio operators to send data over longs distances and then relay through local WiFi. It won't be fast but it will get data through
To deal with stress I work out before work. My feeling is no matter how frustrating the day -- I've accomplished something.
In the long run, if you have your choice of jobs, avoid one where they are trying to get 24/7 coverage but only want to pay for 8/5. Working in an environment where you know you have backup makes life easier. Companies that demand everyone be on call are not valuing your contribution to the company but regard you as part of the infrastructure and will be replaced when they feel you are no longer useful.
Shouldn't that headline be "Media Love Apple and Its Army of Fans"? Remember "media" is a plural But then how often do most members of the media forget that too? I'm just saying...
At work - I have noticed over the decades the increasing use of profanity and vulgarities. Im probably guilty too. I remember my first job in the 80's was at a large brokerage firm. This was back in the days when one could smoke in the office and after office parties might end up in a strip club. However, the language was not nearly as bad as it is now.
I remember one woman, who was a brand new Harvard MBA, when giving a presentation would use profanity, pause looking over her glasses, and wait for the shocked expressions on our faces. I overheard her boss later chastising her saying that he expected someone with her education to be able to express herself better.
Now - I have had actually had men and women of all education levels swear in a job interview. They may have gotten the jobs but the language was a strike against them.
Shall I just tell under which rock my house key is hidden?
Why would I give out my ideas here? I'm sure there are bad guys lurking here too

This will be great for helping burglars avoid people who might be able to kill them.
Rather than making flying as easy as boarding a train the govt would make boarding a train as bad as boarding a plane. The appeal of Amtrak from Boston to points south and west is lower cost and less humiliation.

Tell that to NBC when they broadcast the "Olympiad" every four years (and promote ad nauseum)
