Agreed. I read this and thought "Damn, I have a 900Mhz machine and now it't worthless!"
The hardware that's out now is way too much for the average user. I used to do tech support for a PC manufacturer and customers would ask me about "the fastest machine they could get their hands on" and I would sigh. The price gap between mid and high end is so large and when you don't know how to shut down a pc (without hitting the power button) and you are calling me for tech support on how to change your desktop pattern, you don't need that fast of a machine.
what about IM clients, IRC, and the like? I havn't used ICQ in a while but you used to be able to send a message to an offline user and the would get it once they went online. if this were passed in to a law (I think it would have to be) what would the definition of email be? would it just be pop3, imap, and smtp servers or would there be some type of blanket clause that states "if a message waits for someone to retrieve it, it's email."
make sure that the outside world can only access the ports that it needs. (80, 21, 23, etc) Also, if you need to keep a few ports open just for you (maybe you set up a ftp server just for you on the default port) move it to some obscure number. some people just don't know how to run a portscan.
Also, restrict access to certain services by IP address if you can. I have IIS set up at home and only allow access to certain folders based on IP address.
looks good. The only con (to me) about it is that the keyboard isn't qwerty. I'm sure getting used to the layout wouldn't take much time but for people that are really used to qwerty may have a tough time with it.
yea, I was really waiting for a dupe post april fools joke. maybe the whole page one story. maybe next year. till then I guess we'll see the dupes on non april fools days!
Our servers have a dr. seuss theme. One fish, two fish, red fisl, blue fish and the like. The list of names are endless. They thought of using all anime characters but some of the names are a pain to spell
Don't you think it would be a lot easier, and more successful, to run large corporation's finances through an advanced version of turbotax to find corporate fraud?
let the movie co's go out of business. Maybe we'll all be able to see better independant films that don't have adam sandler or anything resembling that drunken master movie. not to mention chick flicks
When I used to work at the apple store, one of my friends came in to visit. He walked in to a group of about 6 employees standing around. All wearing the black apple shirt with the white apple on the front and wearing kaki's. He was spooked and asked me if apple was a cult. I told him yes;)
Since nothing from mac os 9 and under, does that mean it's the most secure? hehe.
On a serious note, I doubt that many Windows admins are going to go through this trouble. Nimda was a good example. As they say, you can lead a horse to water...
I aggree. Working with an ISP I constantly hear, "Are your servers down today?" Those are the first words out of 25% of customer's mouths when they call. And they're doing dumb stuff like not connecting to the internet before trying to send email. It's rude.

heh, did you notice the email address? daddypants@slashdot.org
This is a good feature to try to weed out dupes though.
True, true. That was my philosophy till windows XP. I haven't done a reinstall since it came out. It's very close though.

do you think we could get a visual map of dupe stories?
Spill hot McDonald's coffee on yourself before anyone else does, but make sure you don't hit any "vitals."
I deleted all of my temp internet files and this story still showed up! Where did I go wrong?
This was back when we were students in high school. The dumb user was the person in charge of the lab at the time.
Your security is only as good as your dumbest user.
A buddy of mine and I have been uttering those words for years.
so where was your start menu in windows 3.1?

for some reason when I type "go to hell" in google it doesn't bring up microsoft right away like it used to.

Ahhh. Got it. Thanks for clarifying that for me.
I bet they could find aliens in a day if they ran seti on all of those machines.
For the same reason why there's no tax if someone ships you something you bought across state lines. It's just something that they do.
