I think it's more accurate that a lot of the louder commenters are left-wing. Certainly there are lefties amongst us geeks, but I think there are a lot of libertarians (as opposed to Libertarians) around these parts as well, and I think the little-l Libertarians, while not card-carrying dyed-in-the-wool Republicans, tend to have more views coincide with the right than the left. Of course, I could be wrong, since I haven't bothered to tally each person over the years.
Try Woodrow Wilson. He forced laws down the country's throat, including prohibition, that were highly unconstitutional. However, he and A. Mitchell Palmer used Wilson's executive orders to make it illegal to question the president's actions during war. This is why Eugene V. Debs died in prison, because he questioned how helping one king defeat another was making the world safe for democracy.
I realize that most history professors revere Wilson, who was himself a history professor, but the man had little use for the constitution and individual liberty, unless it got him the vote. Hell, Wilson was so bad that when his VP ran for president in 1920, people voted overwhelmingly for Harding because he wasn't connected to Wilson.
Sometimes subtle things make a big difference. On my WinXP box at work, I've had to install various 3rd party apps to try and duplicate common Linux desktop behaviors (virtual desktops, rolling windows, sloppy focus, etc.). I was kind of suprised at how annoyed I was when I didn't have those features.
Now you know how I feel about OS X and especially Expose. I don't know how many times I go to hit F9, F10, or F11 at work... which is a pity when I'm in our Oracle forms.
You know, this has always been the way it's been, even before Rome and Carthage were duking it out.
At the same time, consider that the US troops put themselves at greater risk by attempting to reduce the risks to civilians, even in enemy territory. And they try to keep things like electricity, water, and sewer systems running. Terrorists aim for civilians and infrastructure.
And if you are hoping for Communist China to be a world-saver, go stand in front of that advancing armored personnel carrier and ask their opinion.
Go ahead, mark me as flamebait, but worrying about how we can make things fairer for people who try to kill innocent civilians seems like some REALLY misplaced worry.
I know, some of you will say I'm barbaric for doing that, but I spent two weeks in Arizona that left me with a permanent thirst and newfound appreciation for ice.
People will pay a small fortune to keep the kids quiet in the back seats...
Funny, my dad just had to pay for a pocket knife, so he could cut a switch off the willow tree in the front yard. It's a shame my dad never learned fencing or kendo; he could reach back and, without looking, land a major hit in just the right spot before you could blink.
Ugh! No kidding. I was a U2 fan until that dogpile came out. There were a couple interesting ideas on that CD, but most of it was absolutely unlistenable. "Ooh! Tape loops! With Eno! We are so cool we will singlehandedly reverse global warming!"
Feh, now I have that damn disc in my head. I need to fire up October on my iPod to act as mental floss.
It's all a great conspiracy, and you fell into their trap. You see, if Apple starts shipping two button mice (mouses? meese? moose?) on x86 systems, then the Apple threads at slashdot become very small, with few posts. The perception would then be that Apple isn't all that important, because there is so little discussion about them.
So, on behalf of everyone at Apple, we thank you for your two-button-mouse-on-a-laptop-you-would-never-buy-a nyway rant. Salud!
Everything comes at a price, and it's all part of the price we pay for freedom of expression. I wish sometimes it didn't involve Oprah Winfrey fans, but there it is. Besides, didn't the Europeans send all their criminals and religious loonies to the colonies here, unless they were in the government already? They are the ones who should apologize.
btw Apple hardware is much cheaper in the US than in Europe - how about complaining on this?
And the solution I hear from Europeans is to, get ready, increase the taxes in the US! Tsis is the exact argument they make about gas prices being cheaper here, and I would bet a week of your pay that they would make the same argument again. But then I guess those 'free' government services have to be paid somehow...

- At lease he didn't go with a crash joke.
Look like someone is having bad psychological problems with late payments on his car loan...A mod point! A mod point! My kingdom for a mod point!
[Gives Rosco a standing ovation]
I can't tell, my BSD system just died.

Well, yeah; it's from salespeople.
Ah, obviously they're going after the lucrative siamese twin market.
- Drop it in the toilet of the men's restroom at your office.
Please don't tell me what you were doing in there. And the solution I hear from Europeans is to, get ready, increase the taxes in the US! - "The new iMac G5 family features a removable desktopfoot."
Hm, should be popular in the McCartney household.[Rousing chorus of boos]
Oh, like you sickos didn't think of that first.
Yes, it's all about market share! That's why all the web server worms and virii are written for Apache!
No, that would mean it's running Windows ME.
But I don't want a management job. I have a work ethic.
