Sure maybe they are all lemmings, but to completely buy that argument you would need to believe that women and minorities just aren't intelligent enough to be able go decide which party best represents them. Personally I don't buy that and think women and minorities sure as shit know which party represents them, and which party wants to kick them to the side of the road.

As far the guy above admitting he supports
Asscraft, well lets just say anyone who supports a strong central authority who wants to invade every nook and cranny of my privacy is not on the same side as me.

Isn't that the kicker though? The Republicans for all their "less government in our lives mantra" sure are hell bent on not only telling everyone what they can and can't do to their body, but they want a MASSIVE government agency perpetually monitor our personal space as well.

I could go on and on why I'm shocked why anyone but white farmers with no exposure to minorities vote Republican, but suffice to say the "every man for himself/less taxes for the ultra wealthy" doctrine that the Republicans offer up year after year disgusts me. We live in a Community and for better or worse are "all stuck in this together". The sooner we all start realizing that and work on things like Full national health-care and tax laws which benefits more than the wealthiest citizens(elimination of capital gains and inheritance tax anyone?) the better off we will ALL be.

Its not like the Democrats are some perfect party who never sell out or aren't tagging along with some of Bush's proposals (what do you mean we have to support some of this crazy homeland security stuff to get reelected?), but when push comes to shove I'll take the party that better supports women, minorities, non-Christians, and in general the labor class.

You Republicans are now free to accuse me of waging class warfare, but remember your the ones whose policies encourge it.

More on Evolution itself, I think besides the PST thing, its a fantastic program. Compared to the early versions, it launches and closes in a reasonable period of time. It's good looking and really I think is without a doubt the best opensource "full-featured" email/Pim every made.

One thing I also wonder about is a win32 port of the program. Just like OpenOffice eases the transition because you can get started on a windows version first, so would a windows version of Evolution. I know, easier said then done, but its something to think about.

But betting on MS really doesn't help when like most businesses you use software other then windows and Office. So while with MS your technically more "safe" form them going under, that doesn't help for all the other software out there. In the end commercial software can't guarantee lifetime support. While with Open source you can. Sure it may cost you, but as long as you have access to the source, you can pay someone to fix it. Maybe you don't want to, but that's a nice safety net that can never be taken away, unlike what you get with closed source software.

"Most companies out there would prefer to take their chances on Microsoft's long term viability then they would on taking the chance that some Open Source project is going to continue to be actively developed"

The only thing that guarantees is that long term you'll be under the thumb of MS and its heinous licensing fees.

That's the lemming point of view that has gotten the computer industry to the point where it is now. No innovation in markets that MS has a monopoly in. MS blinks and everyone takes out their wallets or stop developing software in that market.

" maintain some open-sourced program whose chances of dropping off the radar screen or having its developers lose interest are much, much higher"

That's why you choose wisely. Here is why that point which always comes up is a complete red herring. I wouldn't heavily invest my company in any commercial company who either a) may be on the skids or b) is brand new. The same logic applies to open source. Your not gonna pick some project that doesn't have a good track record. Choose your software wisely and you'll do just as well with Open source as you do with commercial, plus access to the code.

So in conclusion if you have the staff to implement it, and have made sure there are support avenues available, there is no situation where Open Source doesn't trump commercial software Period.

Sure we've had distros like Corel who showed that you could make the linux desktop workable. But now with Redhat 8 you have the leading distro putting out a release that's usuable right NOW by any small business who just needs access to the basics like web, email, and an office suite. 15. Just one thing on Microsoft takes on PDF · · Score: 5, Interesting

"MS will embrace Adobe's PDF idea, extend it using XDocs, and then let Adobe's PDF wither as Office defaults to output XDoc instead of PDF"

Since when does Office output PDF files by default? Office only will output PDF files if you spend several hundred dollars on Acrobat. When you print to PDF, you either click a little icon or click File->print PDF. There is absolutely no way MS could stop or influence that. Unless when people try to print PDF files MS hijacks the Adobe buttons and makes them print Xdocs instead. That would have them in a losing court battle with Abode instantly as what MS would have done is break Acrobat on purpose. Adobe actually has the money to defend itself.

The other thing is for this to take off everyone needs to be running Office 11 which isn't going to happen for quite some time. There are a ton of Office 97/2000/XP installs out there. So really just like Acrobat most people would have to download some sort of addon program to read Xdocs correctly since they won't have Office11. Also most people won't even have the ability to make Xdocs.

So although I wouldn't bet against MS, I'm not so sure PDF is going to be dying anytime soon.
