  1. Web-Based News Reader on Faster Feeds Using FeedTree Peer-To-Peer · · Score: 1

I personally use Bloglines - a web based news reader. This lets me check and read my subscriptions from home and work without having to read posts twice. Google Reader is a similar application but has tagging and merges all your feeds into one.

  2. DRM on BBC Releases P2P TV Client Test · · Score: 2, Informative

I'm one of the lucky few who managed to get on the trial and, so far, have found it to be a positive step. I've only used it a small amount so far and have only 1 complaint. In order to download the key to watch any media files, it has to be viewed from within the BBC's player. If you try to watch something with straight WMP, it cannot download the key. After you've started watching something with the BBC player, the key has been downloaded and you are then free to watch using vanilla WMP. This makes the integration with my media software of choice (MediaPortal) less than seamless.

I'm watching this with IE6 but the slides don't seem to be updating. I can only see Will talking. Anyone else got this?

Try MediaPortal - "Media Portal turns your PC in a very advanced Multi MediaCenter / HTPC. It allows you to listen to your favorite music & radio, watch your video's and DVD's, view, schedule and record live TV and much more. You get Media Portal for free/nothing/nada/noppes and best of all it is opensource. This means anyone can help developing Media Portal or tweak it for their own needs!".

  5. Foldershare on Distributed Filesystem for Disconnected Operation? · · Score: 2, Informative

Foldershare is a Win32 "Document Management & Real-time File Mirroring Solution".

I read that "the development team hopes to start work on Mac OS X and Linux clients within the next six months" (Jan 27th 2004).

  7. Video Blog on Microsoft Launches 'Channel 9' Blog · · Score: 5, Interesting

The videos are much more interested to watch than the text is to read. I get a much better feel about what the person is saying through expression, tone, etc. It's obviously more natural to get information from someone in this way than through text.

  8. Re:So where's TF2, then? on Counter-Strike - Condition Zero Finally Released · · Score: 1

I believe that Team Fortress 2 is part of the multiplayer component of HalfLife2. Probably in the same kinda way that TeamFortressClassic was the good multiplayer component of HalfLife1, before CounterStrike.

AFAIK there hasn't been any official information about this, but I recall reading websites mentioning that the leak included TF2 stuff.

The compilation time issue with Gentoo should be less of an issue soon.

The latest Gentoo Linux Newsletter indicates that the current GRP system will hopefully be updated to allow for binary download and installation. This functionality is hoped to be implemented in 2004.1 and "The tentative release date for 2004.1 is April 28, 2004".

  10. Re:Best summary I've seen of what happened in M2 & on The Matrix: Resolutions · · Score: 1

One mistake I noticed in that description of the events is that the author isn't apparently aware of the press release that describes the matrix online game.

    SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!
He states that the matrix has completed its loop, which is possible, but there is difference in this loop. The press release for the matrix online says that the game is about a war between humans that want to stay in the matrix, and those that think everyone should be "freed".

  11. Re:Hmm on Half-Life 2 NDA Lifted - Online Previews Available · · Score: 1

What I want to know is when are we gonna see some new genres? as opposed to ANOTHER fps?

Hopefully Peter Molyneux will pull something out of the hat in the god game genre and his movie making business game. What other new games are coming that are actually based on NEW concepts?

  12. Anything New? on Half-Life 2 NDA Lifted - Online Previews Available · · Score: 1

From what I've read of the previews and seen on the screenshots, this game has nothing new. Just another FPS....

or it'll have a kickass story-driven dialog that scares the shit out of you and some other stuff. Who knows?

Hopefully if Valve keep up with their "if you show the player a really big bomb, you HAVE to let them blow it up" stance that made Half-Life such a fun single-player game to play (Xen aside) this'll kick ass. Just gimme something to do apart from shooting things, collecting keys, hitting switches and f'ing jump puzzles (like pissing on peoples faces ala Postal 2).

  13. P2P Based Multiplayer on Doom 3 Q&A Gives More Gameplay Details · · Score: 1

I seem to remember hearing a rumour a while ago about DOOM 3 having a P2P based multiplayer component. Now it seems I am imagining it all. But wouldn't be cool to be able to play on a private server with your friends without having to own a dedicated server and a fast connection?

Is this possible to implement while maintaining low pings?

Do any linux based pvrs have support for recording sky digital in the UK and have the ability to select the channel to record?

I presume it would require either be using a standard tv decoder pci card with some form of link to change the channel on the sky set-top box OR some kinda sky decoder on the tv pci card.

If the ISPs are charged by the gigabyte, why can't the users be charged the same? If the system were to work in the same way as a metered telephone system, where you get charged by the gigabyte instead of the minute.

Unfortunately, what happens if some script-kiddie decides to launch a DDOS attack against you because he decides that you are "gay and deserve to rot in the depths of hell for all eternity".

Anyone actually run an ISP and know why it isn't metered by the amount of data you transmit/recieve?
