Isn't this argument kinda like saying "well, it's going to rain no matter what I do, so why bother building a shelter?" You do it to get out of the rain! If there's something we can do to preserve ourselves, no matter what the scale, we should do it. Given how much taxpayer money is wasted on other things, I don't see how this is a burden on our resources. Maybe people will thank us for our foresight fifty years from now after we've developed and tested a system to avert a disaster like this.
One thing sorely lacking with WineX is any sort of GUI installer.
Come on...if you're using Linux, what's the big deal about command line installation? Yeah, I know - make it appealing to the masses, blah, blah, blah. But to say that it's SORELY lacking takes the criticism a bit too far.
It would also be nice if Micro$oft would stop its predatory practices, fatty foods wouldn't make you gain weight and Slashdot would stop repeating stories.
Something about a snowball's chance in hell comes to mind....
Check out NLM's DocMorph at docmorph.nlm.nih.gov/docmorph/default.htm. It's a site put up by the NIH (coincidentally) where you post your scanned image and they post an OCR'ed document, in the format you choose, for a short period. It does a fairly good job for the price (free).
I'm starting up our church's website (no WAY am I posting the link - no/.'ing for us!), and I need to know how to modify PERL scripts. Our budget is pretty thin ~$100/year, so most of this is DIY. Sounds like this should be helpful to me.
This bill does much more than give "life sentences to hackers." Among other things, it formalizes "the existence of the National Infrastructure Protection Center. The center, which investigates and responds to both physical and virtual threats and attacks on America's critical infrastructure, was created in 1998 by the Department of Justice, but has not been authorized by an act of Congress."
I'm all for that. A new twist in warfare is to attack information storage/transfer, not bricks & mortar. This is an important step in defending ourselves.
why is a railway switch hooked up to the public internet? What good reason is there for eletronic valve controls for fresh or sewage water to be hooked up to the internet?
Because it's EASY! There are so many SCADA and DCS vendors out there selling their stuff on the basis that you can check it's status remotely over the Internet. First question always asked of salespeople: "Is it secure?" Reply: "Yes, you need a password to get on, and you can only view the status, you can't change any settings." Yeah, right. Once it's connected to the Internet, it's insecure. I've seen it time and time again. "Don't mess with modems and extra phone lines. Just tap into the local LAN, and get out onto the 'Net. It's so EASY!"
Now, granted, there are some things that just aren't that critical that you can put up on the Internet. It really comes down to cost-effectiveness: it it worth the expense to keep something secure? In some cases, it's just not that important.
Didn't happen for me. I found out that my co-workers were getting paid 20-30% more than me - and I was training them! I told my boss about it, who passed me on to the president. I asked directly for a raise to be paid comparably, and was denied. I looked around, found a job paying 40% more, and quit.
Was my work performance less than my co-workers? No. They just didn't want to pay more than they had to.
Bottom line: move on. Don't stay in one place, if someone else will pay you more.
I've been waiting for news like this. I have a complete download of Mandrake 8.2 burned onto 3 CD's (got it via my brother's cable-modem pipe - my dialup would not work for that), but I've been hesitant to load it up at home, since my family uses only Window$ software, and I've heard that Mandrake 8.2's WINE doesn't work. Now, maybe I can get away with it!
Some of the most interesting items I've found have been on and around college campuses. Ask her to send YOU some stuff, once she gets settled in there.
Why would HR stop it?

I'm missing something here... Why would the HR department prevent you from getting hired just because your resume was submitted previously? What's the difference? If they're that uptight about getting resumes "properly", is that really a place that you want to work for?
They're putting this up against C-SPAN, and the Home Shopping Network. I've heard that they hope to have 30% market penetration in three months.
In other news...grass on the median of Central Avenue grew 1" in the past ten days, and the paint dried on Mrs. Jones' living room walls in only three hours!
This is sad. Why do we still consider old people throw-aways? Once they get to a point where they can't function exactly like the rest of us, they're of no use to us. We resort to building machines to "take care" of them. I would be hurt deeply if I was stuck in a nursing home (excuse me - managed care facility) and had NO one to visit me, except a soul-less machine. The geek in me loves this, but the human in me wants to puke. Let's get our priorities straight, folks!
I'll give the researchers and Sony credit. They see a problem and they're trying to find a solution. I don't expect them to fix the bigger problem. I HOPE that the rest of us will assess our personal situtations and do the right thing.
I'm stepping down from my soap-box now. Thank you.
I've got a problem with that. I'm smart, and I don't apply myself. I could RULE THE WORLD with the smarts I've got, but I just rule my house and my cubicle, and that's good enough for me.
Call me lazy (which I am), but don't call me a drain. I am a lazy, smart guy, and I'm DAMNED PROUD OF IT!
Seriously, I think this dude's website is funny, but he shouldn't be collecting unemployment if he's making money touting his laziness.

how about a Beowulf cluster of these?
if that was where my car keys went. I can NEVER find them.

for a while, and it seems pretty stable. I'm gonna go get the final version.
live bait might not be such a bad alternative.

I'm sold. I just ordered one from bookpool.com. I'll send you my thoughts once I've gotten into it.

Don't forget what the MS in MSNBC stands for:
Micro$oft
While verifying this, I found thisin Business Week. Funny stuff!

It's Detroit. They're buried somewhere close to the center of the city.
I'm taking bets that the site showing "Pictures from the hackathon" won't get Slashdotted. Who's in?
Sounds like a typical get-together at my house. Tell ya what...I'll host the Slashdot convention. Come on over everyone!
GO WINE!!

I'm really sorry about the time I peed on your foot, dude. You just scared the ... well, you know.
