Guess you're not the CEO of the Fortune 500 I used to work for. I see this frequently the time in corporate structure as well - the bigger the structure, the worse it is.

Underling: "That's impossible. We might get it done in N days, and C isn't actually possible without a complete rewrite."
Low-Boss: "Great. The time frame is tight but we can do it with some extra elbow grease! Let's meet about the specs."
Mid-Boss: "Timeline is great and we'll iron out the details."
    Upper-Boss: "It's all on track."
    BIG Boss: "Great job."

The developer has to do the work, and is the most accurate about time constraints and difficulty of the project. At each level of reporting, though, the prognosis get's a little better because nobody wants to deliver bad news. Low management says it will be tough and there are some problems. Middle management says things are looking good and they're working out the kinks. Upper management says everything is great. The Boss has no idea. The more levels there are, the more dilute the bad news becomes.

'It was an absolute misjudgment of the seriousness of the matter,'

Well, if this case requires a JUDGEment as to how SERIOUS it is, maybe you should ask a JUDGE. Like you do... when you get a subpoena.

The librarian could misjudge the situation, and come under legal fire!
The police could misjudge the situation, and come under legal fire!

If you get a subpoena, its ok! Duh!

This pisses me off so much. The government HAS methods available to it for obtaining information, they ought to USE them, instead of complaining that the situation was 'too serious' for such methods.

  19. Wrong Wrong Wrong on The Grateful Dead vs. Archive.org · · Score: 1

This article is out of date, and is just the sort of BS the GD PR men are trying to get dispersed. They have not reversed their position, rather, they've made allowances for a small portion of the songs hosted at at archive.org to be downloadable and the rest to be streamable. Now maybe you and I can rip a stream to mp3 but it's not in the regular joes vocabulary.

This is bullshit, all of that music was made available by the band for the fans, and now the greedy bastards are trying to renege on the deal. Don't buy into this line of simple miscommunication, raise a fit until they allow it all back up.

I don't even like the GD, but this is bullcraptic.
