  1. Re:Paid placement? on Yahoo To Charge For Search Listings · · Score: 2, Insightful

Using AltaVista, paid results are listed with a little divider between the rest of the results

google also does this. a search for "digital camera" comes up with two sponsored links right at the top of the page for pricegrabber and one for cnet shopping, clearly marked as advertisements. I see no problem with and have actually found the links to be useful sometimes.

If its working now why does this decision change anything? sure there is no new development but it sounds like the current version fulfills your old companies needs. nothing stopping you from continuing to use it and if you want more features then spend some cash and hire some developers to add it in for you (and release back to the community). the only problem I could see is if security vulnerabilities are discovered then you need to patch it yourself or look to the comunity for a patch.

I think the easiest setup would be if you could emulate linux apps in a window without having to boot up the whole disto. either way I think it will be more of a good thing for OSS than Linux because most users will think of linux as just a program that allows them to run OSS software.

this just seems stupid to me, either way its bad for the school. they probably have the Wifi so they didnt have to spend the money to wire the buildings with cat5. so now they get to waste money on legal defense and possibly wire the schools as well if they loose. also they could be stuck with wireless equipment that they have already purchased but wont be able to use.
wifi is all over in both business and home so I hope these parents keep there kids away from say starbucks which has wireless hotspots. will they sue their neighbor when they find out they have a WAP?

I wounder what would happen if someone used propriatary code in a gpl program and someone else incorporated that code into their work. would they then be liable?
Anyway I dont see how the end user could be held liable. even if they have access to the source, how would they spot offending code?

why not make the company responsible for notifying my credit card company? Or better yet make them pay for fraudulent charges that I could prove were from their negligance?
They screwed up they should incur the cost of cleaning up the mess. If companies were responsible to that degree than watch how high security budgets would skyrocket. If they shouldnt be responsible to that degree with my sensitive information than why bother passing legislation like this?

sounds like they dont care if you redistribute it, you just cant sell it.

like they say "any publicity is good publicity". I'm sure that any commercial site that gets linked on slashdot is happy to get all the hits. after all why do you set up a public webpage other than to have people visit it and why did this band do this? small personal sites probably don't like a /.ing as much.
This story reminds me of The Offspring. I'm pretty sure they released an album a few years ago and prereleased it on their website in mp3. they were convinced that the trading of their music on P2P networks actually help their album sales.
Currently they have an album where the cd looks like a generic CDR with marker writing that says the title of the album "steal this album". :)

I think most people classify film as an art form and rightly so. Games are already rated similar to films. I think the issue here is when words like "Distribution Control" and "Probation" start getting thrown around it makes some people nervous. I think the ratings are enough. A lot of parents are too lazy or irresponsible when it comes to being informed about what their kids are doing. Ratings are fine but in the end you cant legislate parenting skills or morals.

A friend of my had AT&T threaten to shut off his service for sharing the LOTR movie, only problem was that he was actually sharing the movie trailer.
