I once went to the post office, proceeded to use my debit/credit card for a transaction.
written on the back off my card is "SEE ID"
well, she refused to take the card, on the basis that I may someone, with the same exact name, matching PHOTO id, but a stolen card.
She said she could not accept it and got a manager to come explain why. He said the same thing, that it could be another person's card, with the SAME EXACT NAME as me.
So I asked - "So let me get this straight, if I sign this, you'll take it?" The answer was "Yes." I asked how by me signing it, in front of them, did it verify it to be mine. The couldn't answer. I signed the damn thing and wrote a letter later that day to a higher-up. I got a written apology and ended up getting the transaction refunded.
yea - fuck that - i work in support and hate dealing with assholes that think they know our system and everything else b/c they have a masters or, even worse - a doctorate, in a computer related field.
The best is, after they try and berate you and make asses out of themselves, you ask them what their IP address is now (after you walked them through checking what it was before) and they 'forget' how to get there.

It just works. I was a big fan (still am) of SuSE... but Ubuntu is even easier...and runs very very smoothly even on a 650 mhz duron machine with an old ati video card.
Yah know - I have wondered that myself so many damned times.
Hell, just put my pin on there while we're at it. Just put in a fingerprint reader for some biometric authentication.
Now that'd be nice. Just get rid of the card altogether, pay for that purchase with a fingerprint.
Ugh, I better stop, someone is bound to be watching and realize that's a great way to generate a more accurate, more complete, and constantly updated finger print database....
I think anything that allows a choice is a good thing.
Them releaing a version for firefox helps get even more word out about firefox and proves yet again its abilities as a browser.
same logic follows through for linux - the more pages that people see a download for 'windows' and one for 'linux' and one for 'mac' - the more people might take the time to check out our beloved OS.

God I know thats probably dripping with sarcasm - and 10 years ago, it would be modded as funny...

Gases escaping?

Zing!
Pure Gold.
oh if i only had mod points....
I'll second that vote for Ubuntu.

In fact, I would say it's desktop ready.
shuddup...heh

however, this really is news for nerds.
and to me, it matters.
Very interesting read.
i can just see one of these whack-job parents going through library after library, armed with only a sharpie....
will there be free beer during this event?

Not only that - but if this is more reliable than the current magnetic stripe, I can't see why this isn't an improvement.
its free marketing.

ahhh.....analog time-shifting ;o)
too late - there's already new strains running around...
not really a good way - hopefully.
most of the people reading this, even running windows, should have patched boxes.
a virus-laden link would have it's purpose served better on the front page of a major news site or web portal.
forget a computer
as long as you can WATCH it - you can copy it.
then even easily re-digitized.
dont forget to reboot.
and after you reboot - windows always manages to find more patches, prompting yet another reboot.
I agree.
