then i reckon they should have to learn. Kinda reminds me of my sister in law, always getting herself in crappy "relationship problems"....biggest basket case this side of ikea....she gets in stupid situations, then her family needs to bail her out...rinse and repeat....i say, let them stay until they figure it out (or get lynched)
My theory about why it doesnt happen to much is the simple fact that most managers (not ALL) have no clue what their techies are doing, or what needs to be done.
I'm a network engineer, when things work, no one complains, if its broken, i get attention, but day to day, my boss has no idea what i do (come to think of it, neither do i....well, slashdot for one thing)
the simple fact is (to quote dilbert) your boss usually knows two things about you
When you arrive/leave. What you look like.
Take those away, they have no idea how to judge you....
its not always the case (thank you allah, buddah elvis) but usually is.
I am living in the netherlands atm and i agree with the above, especially on the part of how when you are not constantly in the office, it affects how you are seen in the organisation, out of sight, out of mind.
Its true that there are alot of positive and negative points about working from home, the most important thing i found for myself was making a area at home that is solely dedicated to work, because if you are sitting in front of the TV with a laptop on your lap, you aren't gonna be too focused on your work.
Mind you, its also a huge time saver as well, as 2 hours work at home (say if you are trying to document something large and complicated) is greater than a whole day at office (constant interuptions)
i think working from home should only be done when its appropriate, but shouldn't be a regular thing unless you are a outside contractor (paid on completion) or if you have small kids or something like that.

one thing i found pretty funny from the above person,
"Please note that when the Chinese were essentially holding U.S. Navy personnel hostage, that America did not go to war."
if i think about the fights america has chosen to participate in recently (and i dont mean ww2 or that, cause back then it seemed like america actually cared about other countrys in the world) are the ones it could easily dominate....afghanistan, somalia, now iraq, they are all conflicts that america has started, knowing full well they can EASILY dominate....kinda like a group of 10 guys beating up 1....
sure these countries do bad things, but if america wanted to stop the people it thinks are really bad, or who really would be a threat to the "AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE (TM)" then they would be off to war with
China North Korea
but choses not to, mainly cause they would get trully spanked (I am no saying north korea could really hurt america, but they have nukes.....bush respects that)
so yeah, all this talk of "we dont start wars with everyone" is true, america only fights the fights it can win easily, while the reasons they claim they are fighting the current war (to liberate these people of their oil^H^H^H from saddam, eliminate the weapons of MD etc) are obviously something they dont believe in, so yeah, draw your own conclusions, think for once....
"If you download mp3s, you're supporting communism"
I mean, seriously, WTF. They need to lay down the crack pipe and just move on.
Everything supports everything else (I breathe oxygen, expel carbon dioxide, my plants then take the carbon dioxide, give off oxygen, i breathe i n the....) we should just say
amen. Even over here in europe, conservatitive=nazi nationalists.
When the germans had their election, you had two choices, the christian conservatives who where pushing for less imigration (even though in germany the over 65 portion of the country is at about 30%+....very smart) and school spending cuts (if i remember correctly)....so, keep the smart people out and breed em dumb (shades of america???)....luckily, they JUST lost...but still....JUST!...whats up with people? I think this whole terrorism thing has made people want to fold up into balls, build a fort out of their sofa cushions and hide....anyone who is not from "these parts" is evil, dirty alien...
I got my SB Audigy set to 96Khz output, which is fed via fibre to my reciever, it shows that the signal recieved is 96Khz.....
but then, the card isnt converting any frequencies at all is it? Just passing it on to another DAC (the one in my reciever)
so basically, my soundcard appears to be there as just a conduit to pass the info to something else....nothing wrong with that i guess, i reckon my reciever (h/k avr 7500) has a better DAC than my soundcard anyways.
Bittorrent. Forces you to share....reminds me of school. The kids who wouldnt share where forced to in the end....your download ability is determined by your upload ability.
Makes everyone "honest" course I am sure some sad bastard has hacked the client already, but still, its good in theory.
One thing I am curious about, one which I seem to always see by the "psuedo" intellectuals that infect slashdot is...
whats wrong with some speculation...
isnt the point to get people thinking...sure the guy descends into a rant at the end (he needs a editor...just not a slashdot one) but he does have some reasonable points, points which wouldnt hurt to be studied further, which again, is what i think the point is...
just because the guy hasnt got all the answers, doesnt mean he is a loser, he's just speculating (least, thats how it looks).
I mean, people like Eintstein/Newton had to observe, speculate, theorise, before they came to the answers...i am sure they got into heated discussion and where made to look like fools because they didnt have "proof"...
i am not comparing this guy to anyone that good, but at least the mind is working creatively, instead of the faux creativity/intelligence here on slashdot.
They are always oversimplified because thats the point of these lists, they are the general points...of course there is more info, this is just the "management overview" of the whole deal/concept.
Just take them as the basis of discussion and go from there.
You never have to agree, infact, arguing is the best thing when it comes to anything like this. See whose ideas can stand the test.
isnt that the point? arent you supposed to judge wether or not to see a movie because of what you see in the trailer....i know other sources as well, but i assume the trailer is supposed to be representitive of the movie.....least a bit.
the problem i see with alot of these online auctions is the level of trust needed. Sure there are checks in place to try make sure everyone and everything is legit...but still, out in the land of the 'net, where anonymity is king, its not to hard to fix these kinds of things (and the impetus to do it is also high, because of this feeling on anonymity) and lets face it, there are lots of people out there that will fall into these traps....i dont feel too sorry for stupid people (at least, until i become one) but still, would this happen in a real life (ie, non online) auction
So, who do you find more attractive, mel gibson or tom cruise
Objection, what has this to do with the trial?
Nothing your honour, I am just so sure of the defendants guilt that i can waste time rating the superhunks
*awed murmers*
that america has no CLASS

I dont like it when people cock up and then resign....i always feel that they should stay and fix the mess they created....
well, kinda hard with the shuttle and all, but you get my drift...
bah, weaklings,
.nl, we hosted the live streaming of big brother...
when i worked for a ISP over here in
300mbit/s out, on old cisco 7500s....had to get new gig cards for it...the original GEIPs started borking....
heh, everyone needed their vouyerism fix.
Fuck yeah
but what if i am on a cisco and i try something like
:)
"ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Null0"
do i have to beat the snot out of myself?

Monkey island references are golden....
i think they should insult swordfight.

"How appropriate, you fight like a COW!"
heh
