There are a couple of reasons why the U.S. is the world leader in biotech, drug developement, and medical technology. 20 year product exclusivity is one of these reasons. I think this is a small price to pay for the sorts of advances we are seeing in these fields currently.
This month's Scientific American had a blurb claiming that the net uplift in the ocean floor displaced enought water to raise sea level by 1 millimeter. If my decimal shifting is correct, that's 335,258,000 sq km x 1 mm = 335 km^3 of uplift. This sounds way too big. Is this even possible?
For some people "not wasting time" is about doing something with your life without regard to societal recognition or pecuniary reward. There can be satisfaction, joy, and personal reward in writing an obscure book, discovering a new bacterium, or scaling an unclimbed peak. Im sure there can be fulfillment in getting high score on your favorite video game, but that satisfaction is not for everyone. There are as many motivations in the world as there are individuals.

The articles over on The Onion are all free. Of course they're also "real" news this week.

Sure, but we'd all get the munchies from highway exhaust fumes on the way to work, and then there'd be 25% less food. The horror, the horror!
