... is that it's not just about how good the graphics are, but about expectations.
For instance, if I had seen PS1-like graphics in the 8-bit era, I'd have drooled. But these days, PS2 / Gamecube / Xbox graphics just don't impress me. The games I like, I like them independently of the graphics, and it's the same with those I don't like.
Some parts from current games *may* impress me, but it's more of a art / landscape thing, not just polygons or effects. For instance, there was a church in Resident Evil 4 which caught my attention, because it was beautiful - not because the game had great graphics, but because it was a beautiful church - if it was a real life one, it would still be a work of art.

Nothing but the GPL allows usage or distribution of a GPL'ed program, so a GPL violation is a standard copyright violation - exactly like one concerning proprietary software.
Fine. If that's YOUR definition of censorship, then please give me a lot of money so I can buy airtime at a TV station and say what I think to the world.
What, you don't want to pay for it? That's censorship! You're just trying to silence me, you dirty commie!!!:)
Buying direct is a better way. I try to buy cds at shows because I feel the artist gets more.
You're feeling what you want to feel. Unfortunately, your feelings are wrong - the artist gets an infinitesimal percentage of the cost of each CD.
And I *do* buy CDs. I'm not excusing myself. I don't download music, except bootlegs, or very hard to find stuff (for which I've first browsed at a couple of stores, like Amazon, unsuccessfully).
AC1 was a brilliant game; AC2 was a disappointment. However, AC1's graphics suck - some might say they already sucked when it was released. But I haven't had as much fun with any other MMORPG, and I've played most of them.
I've always been a big proponent of the axiom, when in doubt, see if Mr. Casual can do it. Games ought not to need big instruction booklets. They should be simple enough to figure out by picking up and fiddling for a moment or two. Turning a system on, that goes without saying.
Translation: "I only like simple action games."
I like those, too. But I also like RPGs, strategy games, MMORPGs, wargames, even flight simulators. And most of those do need manuals.
And if you can't figure out how to turn on a QD, then your VCR is probably blinking "12:00"...:)
This will probably be modded redundant or something, but... great article. I had already read it because it was mentioned in the KOTOR2 forums (Avellone is KOTOR2's lead designer).
The only disappointment is Schaffer, who sounds bored, seems not to like his own games or gaming in general, and seems even surprised that people care about games' stories at all.
I can't fucking stand this. Morons who know absolutely nothing about Java reading blogs about someone's uninformed grudge against Java, then they go and reproduce these opinions as their own.
Reminds me of all the N-Gage bashing... "wtf sidetalking lololol!!!!111!!"
I guess he avoided the Punisher because he wasn't involved at all in his creation, unlike all the other Marvel movie characters. He'll surely be in Fantastic Four, which, from the trailers, looks *terrible*...
There's a difference between taking a risk (using something that's relatively new) and doing something stupid (using something known to be insecure and unstable).:)
The portrait screen is there because, at the time, that's all that Series 60 supported, I believe.
As for games, it depends on whether you think $30+ is fair for NON-cellphone games (GBA, PS2, PC, etc.). If you think that games are just something to fill a couple of minutes, then no - you're not a gamer, no matter the platform.
Also, the N-Gage plays 3 kinds of games: Java games (usually $3 or less, but a bit limited), Symbian games (usually less than $10, but more powerful - think "better than Amiga / SNES") and full N-Gage games (they're the most expensive, come in MMC cards). These ones vary from the first batch, which was poor (Tomb Raider, Sonic N, etc.) to some brilliant stuff later (Pathway to Glory is reason enough to buy an N-Gage, IMHO, and Pocket Kingdom is great too).
Add to that everything the other guy mentioned, and more (web browser (real thing, not just WAP), ssh client, email client, ebook reader, several emulators), and you see that I'm perfectly happy with my N-Gage. If they make a backwards-compatible one with a landscape screen and more powerful hardware, I'll buy one immediately.

Conservative, modern styling
:)
Isn't that a contradiction?
I was going to suggest you buy MS Windows... But then I remembered you said "technically superior", so it wouldn't work. :(
Uh, Prey was a 3D Realms game, it had nothing to do with Epic.
Nothing but the GPL allows usage or distribution of a GPL'ed program, so a GPL violation is a standard copyright violation - exactly like one concerning proprietary software.
Does it actually matter?

That's absolutely completely DISGUSTING!!!!!
:)
Now, if it was a sheep instead of a goat...

I'd buy Zero Wing online in a second. Especially if everyone talked like CATS. :)

Not me, considering that MAME is free, and the Ms. Pacman rom is easy to find. :)
:)
Or Ms. Pacman for a Spectrum emulator.
Or for a Gameboy Color emulator.
Or... you get the idea.
N-Gage doesn't play just N-Gage games.
It also plays all Series 60 games, and there are thousands. See Handango, for instance.
There are also several emulators that run on it: MAME (old 8-bit games only), NES, GameBoy, GBC, ZX Spectrum, and others I don't know about.

"It has a bad reputation, so I won't even look at one".
:)
Sheep!
Nope, the QD doesn't look like a taco. :)
One of the reasons for X-box popularity is the live system, and no one's really tried anything similar for handheld.
*cough* N-Gage Arena *cough*
Gee, that must be why buttons 5 and 7, the ones used for games, are in a DIFFERENT COLOR and even have a DIFFERENT TEXTURE!
:(
<sigh> Why is it that every N-Gage hater has so *obviously* never tried one? They *still* bring up sidetalking all the time...
So, you think it still has sidetalking, have never seen a game, can't spell "knolage", but still want to impress us with your wisdom? :)

Right. And the current Nintendo handhelds are monochrome.
