No, not what distro to use but how should you choose a distro? Is it on the UI, install time, ease of maintaince, etc? Do you try to give the user a complete backup disk or a single CD and setup a net install program like apt-get or emerge?

Internationally speaking, what about distros that contain software that's illegal to have like encryption in China or deCSS in the US? Do you suggest rolling your own distro from say debian or gentoo?

  3. GPL vs EULA on A Public Library's Linux Success Story · · Score: 1

They're not the only ones which begs the question: If EULAs are legal how could the GPL be illegal? Both put limits on how and what the recipient can do with what they've received so where's the difference that would make one illegal and the other not? After all, they're both contracts.

I hate putting the two in the same catagory since the GPL clearly protects the user while EULAs have mostly been used to oppress the user but legally I don't see the difference.

  6. Bubble sheet scanner and LED printer on CA Secretary of State Bans Diebold Machines · · Score: 1
The optical scan aka "bubble sheet" ballot method works very well in many states but suffers from one major problem: flexibility. My idea is to redesign the currently used optical scanner container to contain a LED printer that would print each "bubble sheet" ballot as they are needed. On the printer there would be a few fixed buttons that would allow poll workers to print ballots in different languages, large print, disability access (except braille of course), etc. Each ballot would have the standard unique number and possibly an additional bar code for ballot tracking. The ballot template would be stored as a PostScript file and checksummed by the printer to insure against changes. These ps files would be tossed on a cf card and sent to towns. The printer and scanner would not have any kind of data connection.

The important part is that voters would vote on machine readable paper ballots that could be electronically counted and easily audited at any time. If the ballot template had been tampered with the audit will find it.

This seems to give voters a more flexible voting system than currently used, a much lower cost per seat than the currently proposed e-voting systems, simple for poll workers to setup, use and breakdown and a rock solid audit trail.

Hey Palm: take a lesson from Jobs and cut back to three or four models max instead of seven. Focus on developement and not just marketing. Bring the prices down to something a little more reasonable like:

    $100 for a Zire 31 with a 320x320 screen

After they stall you for a year or two just to come up with the regulations they most likely want engineering data concerning possible damage to the riverbed and the generator's effect on river currents. Of course this really makes no sense but local politics never did.

Years ago my family spent a few years trying to get a 30' fix pier (that others on our street could use for free) built by our property. Between the hassles of the town, state and MEPA we gave up. Strangely a few years later a neighbor (and state senator) who opposed to our project build his own from our prints 100' away. I guess we didn't grease the right gears.

My advice, make it small, discrete, quite and easily removable. Be forward that running your own generator over a long period is probable cause for the DEA to search your house as a suspected grow-op. It sounds crazy but again it's all about politics.

    Bonne Chance.

I also used to hand out a version of my resume as a browsable stack, which was kind of cool and helped me get a few Mac-related jobs as well.

Again, not programming jobs but (always assuming) jobs that required more than the average mac person.

It's a pity that HyperCard died when it did (really about 10 years ago), but it was always the "neither fish nor foul" of Apple products.

HC never made Apple money as a stand alone product but sold a ton of macs. It sucks they both killed and buried it. It was really fun. Thanks for reminding HC programmers of that. Great post. BTW, IMO HC on GNU/Linux would rock.

Because of all the low level XFCN stuff I don't know how well it would translate to cross platform life but allowing the open use of the langauge would be a good start.

Dumping it out under a BSD license (GPL would be better but that's a whole other war) would be sweet but IMO it will never, ever happen which, again, is sad. A lot of great stacks and hundreds of thousands of programming hours will be lost because Jobs wants it gone.

I love macs (I still use an eMac for video work) but everything else is on my gentoo box because of crap like this. You'd have a better chance of Apple bring back the Newton (what a sweet machine).

Current textbook companies will stall on porting to the digital world just like book, magazines and music did. Then they'll see the light and jump all over it because an outsider is pushing them out of their own market. Pushing bits is a lot cheaper than printing on dead trees. Textbook publisher's profits will soar.

IMO the best solution is to also use GPL textbooks created through a wiki system. Schools would save a ton of money. Add the ability for teachers to easily send students notes, allow anyone to create books and Sony will make a ton of money. Everyone wins. It's up to Sony to play this into a bigger profit center than the PS2 or to have it end up like their MagicLink (also a great device which I own).
