> I've found that on my console, I can turn it on,
> wait for it to boot for a minute or two...
If you have to wait for your console to boot, then it's not a console.
My guess is that you've been swindled by some evil man who puts PC in cute little boxes and sells them as consoles.
> Just think how many people still can't program the time on a > VCR. Do you seriously think they're going to find a go-around > to Regional encoding when they're barely competent enough > to wipe their own arse?
Well in Denmark (and I guess many places in Europe) most cheep DVD players are region free, and the more expencive ones can be modified as an option often proposed by the salesman. So Joe Sixpack doesn't really have to think that hard to get around regional encoding.
It is VERY expensive compared to the price of my lovely debian install;)
My point is, you are talking about ignorance, and then you argue "Hey just buy a copy of Windows" like it's a freaking soda or something? Now that's ignorant!
>that's like telling a smoker that if he quits every other day, >each time he lights up it will be that much better. > >Sorry, pal. It don't work that way:)
Yes it does!:)
If I quit smoking for a day, no words can describe how wounderfull that "first" cigaret is going feel;)
> If you stick a novice in front of a typical Linux > distro for a couple weeks, the productivity will be > measurably equivalent to sticking them in front of a TRS-80.
Well that's just plain wrong. The novice people that I know can't install neither windows nor linux, and usualy can't figure anything out that i don't show them how to do. But when I've shown them how to get around, it doesn't matter wether they are clickin on icons in KDE or in XP.
--- SNIP --- I use it all the time now, there are only a handful of sites that don't support it that I goto. If a site doesn't support another browser besides IE then I just don't use it. --- SNAP ---
If a site only works in IE, you ought to politly write the webmaster and make him understand that there ARE people doesn't have access to IE. Simply boycutting the site doesn't do any good.
Now lets also pretend that a new iMac comes out early next year. It has a G5, LCD, kick-ass design, OS X, etc etc. Can you image the waves such a product would make?
Make the screen 17" and throw in a
GeForce3 GPU, and I'll but 10:)
Err, if the Iraqi people are so bad off then why do they continue to let the leadership lead them?
You have to remember that the "government" in Iraq is a dictatorship that control everything including the flow of information.
IMO Sadam has managed to twist the perception of "his people" in order to use the sanctions to his advantage. So in effect, the perception of Iraqis might very well be that these sanctions ARE unprovoked attacks by, as you put it: "lazy, overpowered, devil Americans".
If this is true, (and I think it is) the sanctions have the exact opposite effect, as Sadam will end up even more powerful thanks to that HUGE propaganda weapon that has been placed in his hands.
Its kinda funny how the Middle East folk that are considered to be our adversaries are celebrating in light of these attacks. One has to ask, where would those nations be without the US? We have done too much catering to these ungrateful nations.
First I'd like to say that I also pray* for the victims and their families, but can you tell me one thing that the western world has done (in the last 10 years) that the average Iraqian should be grateful for?
Personally I think I would be pretty pissed at USA/EU/NATO if I were starving to death in Iraq due to sanctions posed by the western world.
(*, I don't actually pray since I'm sort of a Zen buddhist)
OK you could wrestle with an illegal and clumsy software like DeCSS
It may be clumsy, but it's not illegal. At least not in my country;) (Denmark)
...Or use an OS that supports legal DVD players.
Listen to your self! It's like saying "Go buy a chair in which you can legally read your book!!!
BTW I do have a hardware player, but this is about principles and freedom of information!
Commercially controlled information storage formats is one thing I CAN NOT tolerate.
But the truth of the matter is that people don't write those routines to promote fair use. They write them to promote stealing. Trying to hide behind "fair use" is bullshit.
What truth?... Your truth?
My truth is that people DO write these algorithems to allow me to exercice my fair use rights!
Take DeCSS forinstance. I CAN NOT watch my DVD's without DeCSS because I only use OSS.
And that's not even about fair use, but GENERAL USE of a product that I have PURCHASED!!!
The unspoken truth of the matter is that people write those routines so that illegal copies can be made and distributed.
All this whining about people getting in trouble for writing software to crack CSS and e-books makes me sick. Clearly, the reason this stuff is written is to make copies of copyrighted material.
Your absolutly right! It IS written to to allow the copying of copyrighted material, and you have a RIGHT to do this under the fair use laws. What the DMCA does in effect is to cancel out fair use!
Body: ....you stop supporting the Linux/XFree86 platform, as I have
been informed is the case.
The Linux Desktop market share has been estimated to be as big as,
if not bigger, than the Apple, and more importantly this group of people
is in my opinion mostly what I would call "Power User".
"Power Users" are the "neighbor / friend / son / nephew / etc" that people call when they need new "computers / hardware / etc", and are in doubt about what to buy. Chances are these "Power Users" won't recommend hardware to people, that they can't use them self.
I know for sure that I don't, and I have assembled quite a few computers
to my friends and family!
In effect you will lose the entire Linux Desktop market and also
in my opinion _BIG_ parts of the "Home Build Computers" market.
Also the Linux Server market share has been estimated to be about 30%.
You may not be all that interested in the server market, but servers need
graphics cards as well.
So this is another marked that you will lose completely.
Please let me know if I have been misinformed or if
you decide to continue your support of the Linux/XFree86 platform.
If this had just been IBM, one would have thought this might be the beginning of an "official" IBM Linux. Even with Intel in there though, does this mean IBM is shopping for a distro to get behind with their recent Linux push?
I know many people probably disagree, but i think that an IBM Linux distro would be FUCKING SWEET!!!
Just imagine walking down the hall to your PHB's office and throwing that deep blue box on his desk. Ahhhhhh:)
Also I'd like to see IBM throwing a bunch of money/developers after the Wine project, and integrating it in their distro.
On a final note, IBM buying lokigames, I think would do wonders for the Linux Desktop.
I have a pen pal in France. Occasionaly I send her gifts. A few times I have wanted to send her a movie. Not always something new eaither. Just imagin a French girl watching the Blues Brothers. But because of all of this zone crap I haven't even attempted. Now I know I could try to find a zone 2 disk of a movie to send to her, or try to find a no Zoned disk... but I don't really want to go thru all that trouble.
Actually most DVD players in Europe are region free. In Denmark they are anyway.
By the way, what's so funny about a French girl watching the Blues Brothers?
Is this some sort of "sick" American joke???:)
You contradict yourself. "The greatest government in the world - the US government." and "Simply put, BillG and the Evil Empire have too many politicians in their pockets to make any investigation successful." These statements surely cannot be spoken in the same breath.

Just get the latest driver from nvidias website.

I've seen your signature many times, but I've never understood what you mean.
What exactly does VisualStudio.NET have to do with Linux developers?
and can't read normal CD's or DVD's
It is VERY expensive compared to the price of my lovely debian install ;)

Just wondering here, how much $$$ is a Windows license these days? Last I checked they didn't grow on the trees.

M$ actually LOOSES money by selling you an Xbox.
I don't think so since it's only the original copyright owner that can change the license.
