    remember that as much power as /. and "united" geeks everywhere think they have (let's remember this is the same group famous for text editor holy wars, how do you think they'll feel about political issues?) in the context of the large voting population, most of which is approaching or in retirement and all for your paying for their perscription drugs with every one of your paychecks; you still have no real voice.

    whatever happened to that geek relocation project that was trying to get 20,000 like-minded geek voters to move to some small state where they would actually have some rael political clout? or Freedom Ship?

    i'm typing this under xp that gets several hard lock ups a day, usually while playing EA games (whereas halflife runs flawlessly while ripping internet streams into mp3 in the background)

    you know when cars first became popular you used to be ablet o choose the engine the chassis and the body

    and the reason teh ywere mass produced by henry ford was to bring the price down so everyone could have one...

    i saw a thing on the history channel (or mybe discovery?) about how the trend in the auto industry aws moving towards snap-together parts (like big legos) where you could literally snap your bumper off and put on anew one a door etc ahd a car totally customized to what you wanted

    this appears to just be a restaurant style approach to this (do people in restaurants always order what's on ht emenu? of course not but they get it anyway)

    i wonder if even half that had gone into feeding the poor, sheltering homeless and educating and taking care of people how much better off we'd be now from all those people becoming productive and fulfilled...

    Are the statistics on how many of the reported bugs actually get attention from M$ developers and are fixed.

    Dislcaimer: no i didn't RTFA because i refuse to register for NYT and for the trolls who say "what're you new here? use login xxx/yyy" or whatever, the more you cirumvent and give the traffic the more incentive you give them to use stupid registration practices and restrict information further in the future. (imagine if suddenly they had a huge drop off in traffic cause people got sick of registering)

    that's all well and good but for someone like me, the 23 yo would-be college kid w/ 30 hours and 3 worthless IT certs (A+/Network+/and *GASP* MCSE, yes that's right and i started with slack '95 and i've had openbsd as my NAT server for years so keep your holier-then-thou comments to yourselves)

    the up front cost of all that extra his is way out of my ballpark.. and if i can make neough to get the fuck out of my parents house doing freelance work i'd definitely consider doing it.. although i know people hwo have done this and the hours and pay are both irregular.. but for $60/hr i could get over that.. you end up dealing with teh same people working at any major computer retail chain anyway, why not actually get to keep some of the money instead of being whored out by compusa/bestbuy/circuit city/wtf else

    i like probably everyone else here already do some of that support for free and family is extremely demanding and totally thankless... getting paid for the abuse is looking beter by teh minute

    and certainly better than $10/hr to stand on my feet all day in a poorly lit back room doing the same thing on someone else's schedule in their uniform under their asinine policies etc

    of course i know other people who have made a fair amount of side cash by selling pirated office suites and what not to people under the table when they asked forit after theri tech work had been done.. so if you dont' give a fuck abotu M$ eulas, that's another way although i personally don't..

    i have seen how taxing it can be but it seems like a lot more freedom afforded than a lot of other IT jobs.. but i'm sure it beats crawling under houses to run DSL cable (i haev done that)

    gillette sent me a free mach 3 on my 18th birthday and i liked it a lot and was impressed that such a company even existed, i dont' recall coke giving me a free 12 pack or any other company

    as a result i've been buying their blades and razor's exclusively since that time but if they want to get draconian they will start losing customers one at a time the same way the gained them.
