    because Americans do things right ? thats news to me... check Kyoto, International law court, Johannesburg, ad nauseum....

    Actually, I'm British, but I reckon America got it right on most of the above.

    Nice to see that slashdot is finally picking up the BBC's bias on certain issues. Those who watch/listen to BBC news will know how biased they are on, for example, the Euro. It seems the Americans can't do anything right in their eyes, either...

    In the UK, we have MOSTLY switched to Metric

    Not exactly of our own free will, I might add. I'm not trying to say that the Imperial system is necessarily better (that's a matter of opinion), but the idea that market traders are not *allowed* to use imperial units because of some foreign bureaucrat's rules is absolutely disgusting.

    FWIW handguns were not outlawed in Britain due to gun crime, but fear of abuse by licenced holders, after one licenced gun owner, Thomas Hamilton, went bezerk in a school in Scotland.

    Although the police realised he had a history of mental illness, and hence should not have given him a license.

    There are strong arguments that this is related to some of those incursions you say you welcome, including the ban on handguns -- which didn't even reduce the rate of gun crime, much less violent crime in general.

    Yep, the government has made the interesting yet surprising discovery that criminals don't obey gun laws.

    Yep, same here. His political instincts and mine may be more or less completely opposed, but unlike many in the government of His Tonyness, he has a shred of honesty in him.

    Yes, video games which don't let you make a backup copy (well, at least not in theory).

    My Toshiba SD-210EB has a simple mod which removes region protection and macrovision. Cost me about 10 quid for both mods. I can copy any DVD to VHS now through a SCART cable.

    Btw, I remember that once upon a time Macrovision could be defeated by hooking up one VHS player to the TV via the UHF cable, then hooking another one up via SCART. That hasn't worked recently. It's not a problem, since I only copy DVDs these days anyway, but I'm interested to know if Macrovision has changed in recent years.

    Legal notice: I only copy DVDs for backup use, and watching in my bedroom.

    Thankfully, not quite - there are plenty of avis and mpegs floating around. George ain't gonna be able to destroy all of them in a hurry...

    And the soaps, often imported from america. Often, there is no story in these - usually it's just a bunch of people living every day lives, cracking a few jokes. No story to speak of (apart from who's going out with who this episode?)... a little character development but not much reason to tune in regularly. I can watch an episode, skip a few weeks, and not miss anything significant.

    A bit like soaps from Australia, then?

    I can assure you that we get endless requests for extensions to the system and have not had a single complaint except where the system has failed to catch a criminal.

    Hmm... it may be because many people like having cameras, or it may be that you have lots of people who don't like them, but don't feel strongly enough about it to say so. Myself, I don't see that much of a problem at the moment... I just don't trust the authorities enough to only put them where they're needed. Surely putting more policemen on the street (diverting them from the motorways, maybe) would be a better solution?

    Just out of interest, what party are you a member of?

    I don't support them (at least not to this extent), and I'm in the UK. Does that make me a criminal? I hate being watched wherever I go. By all means put them in car parks and on private property, but other than that there should be serious restrictions on where the police can put them. (And it's nice to see that this is finally starting to happen with those damned gatso cameras).

    Oh, and I also think the gun laws in the UK don't work, and have prevented many people from enjoying a legitimate hobby, while actually contributing to an increase in crime. Doesn't look as though we agree on much, does it? :-)
