  1. Re:18-35 #14 ANIMAL RIGHTS on Help Select Questions for Bush and Kerry · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is a good question, however it could be worked a little more.

Unfortunately people have the idea that animal rights means you are a crazy, because people don't understand animals can feel (mental or physical) pain.

Protecting animals can go a long way in helping people. For example, if the government would actually start regulating the meat industry better, millions of workers would have a better way of life. The meat industry is the most dangerous industry in america to work in, and it's all because of giant factory farms. This doesn't even begin to cover the environmental effects that this industry has.

A better way to phrase the question would be to make it about farming and health. Phrasing it in a positive light goes a long way too. For example:

How would you work to protect small farmers from being disenfranchised from the large corporate and factory farms? Would you consider greater tax breaks for farmers that grow healthier and more environmentally safe food?

Sadly people just don't get animal rights. When they are faced with the question in black and white terms they end up making excuses for their behaviors. Or they get angry and dismiss it all as crazy PETA nut-jobs (very unfortunate, because PETA is nothing more than a marketing tool, meant to piss people off to gather attention, defeats the entire purpose if you ask me).

  3. Music, sure, that's not the problem on What Counts as Music and Why? · · Score: 1

The music produced by Ka-Blamo can be copyrighted by the owner of the material used to produce the music. Not nearly enough of the original art is being changed. For you to turn an mp3 into a wav file.

What's more interesting in this type of music is the way in which it is translated from it's original source into music. That is also something that could be copyrighted.

  9. Re:Sounds like a classic death spiral on Salon Asks for Help · · Score: 2, Insightful

Salon.com is very cheap to subscribe to. $20 for a year, that's really good. The quality and quanity of output from the magazine is far greater than any monthly magazine you'd be paying $12-30 a year for.

The big problem with cutting trying to save money, is that they got a 10 year lease on a place in SF. They are locked into it, so they can't very easily go "well, we need to cut costs a bit, so we are moving into my basement." It's very unfortunate.

  10. Difficult to be funny? on Ask Internet Expert Dave Barry · · Score: 5, Interesting

A lot goes on in peoples lives, whether it's horrible events (such as 9/11 or recently the space shuttle blowing up), or personal events (we've all had these). Do you ever find yourself having trouble being funny, and what do you do to cure this problem?

  11. Good idea.. will it work? on Nicotine-Free Cigs, Genetically Engineered · · Score: 1

These will kill you just as well as normal ciggeretttes, but they just don't have any nicotine, which is the addictive part. There are three steps you can use, to actually kick your chemical addiction. Once that is done you can concentrate on your oral fixation problems.

I think a big place that this will help is people that like to go out to bars and are around second hand smoke and just want a cigg really bad. It'll kill you, but they won't wake up in the morning craving one as bad I bet.

I also like that the guy admits to the fact that he's in it for the money, a little honesty in the tobacco industry is a bit of a relief.

  12. Just what we need.... on Elect Steve Jobs President of the United States · · Score: 2, Informative

I would say I probably agree with Jobs moral and political views more than our current leader's (he's liberal, and he's a vegetarian (which speaks highly of morality issues)). But let's think about this for one little second... he has absolutely NO EXPERIANCE in politics. None. Don't throw your votes away on this, find a real canidate and support he/she when they run.

He would probably tell other countries that they would have to wait until the next Presidential Expo to get all of his foreign policy regulations, and not disclose to the public any information until said expos. Bah!

  13. What I'm waiting for... on Embedded Linux In Onkyo's Home Music Server · · Score: 2

  22. Vegetarians on Ask Alton Brown How Food+Heat=Cooking · · Score: 5, Interesting

As a vegetarian, I'm compelled to ask this: Have you seen a trend in recent years of more vegetarians, or more dishes made without meat? Time magazine had a recent cover story about this, and my feeling is it's becoming a more important part of everyones lives, yet whenever I catch a cooking show on TV it lacks making many vegetarian dishes.

I sort of compare it to Microsoft talking to a lot of my friends: there is a lot of misinformation out there, and you simply don't need to support a "big evil company" just like you don't need to eat the flesh of animals.

Mod this as you feel appropriate :)

36 Hours from Chicago to Cape Cod? That's one hell of a flight :) I thought Seoul to New York was bad...

  25. DVDs on What (And Where) Are The Classic Free Games? · · Score: 1

I just got back from a trip half way around the world (and a 16 hour plane trip). I would actually suggest DVDs as opposed to games, I find them a bit more relaxing and you tend not to move as much (coach is cramped). The Simpsons Series 1 was great, watching short 20 minute episodes with commentaries really ate up the time.

If you REALLY want games to pass you by, I would suggest emulation. Mame, zsnes and all that are supported under OS X (what I use, not sure about you).

Other tips would be, turn your brightness all but one square down and make sure airport is turned off. This will save your battery. And after about 10 minutes you get used to the low brightness anyway. I would also suggest getting some noise cancelling headphones. They don't work perfectly (you still hear noise), but they dramatically improve your ability to hear (and therefore you can turn the volume down lower on the iBook).

Regardless, enjoy your trip. 7 hours isn't so bad, between snacks, trying to catch a nap, and maybe a little playing around on the computer you should be OK. It's not till 12 that I start to feel cabin fever "Can't we just stop the plane now?" :)
