No, sheesh. There's no reason to fork ubuntu when there's already Moooovix.

  2. Re:Or you could just use Firefox... on Plugin Lets Users Turn IE into Firefox · · Score: 1

I work for a company that refuses to let their employees use Firefox based on "security concerns." I was referred to my supervisors for it. Yes, this is incredibly stupid, but I have no say in the matter. I've been pretty happy using opera at work, but I'm definitely going to give this a try.

  7. What do you expect? on Maui X-Stream: GPL Violations, Lies, and Damn Lies · · Score: 3, Interesting

This smacks of that Phantom/HardOCP thing. As long as their lawsuit is "pending" or they're persuing "legal options," their customers (are there any? ok, fine, potential customers) will think this guy is lying. They're just trying to put off the unavoidable death of their pathetic company.

  8. Re:Classical? No seriously! on Indy: Auto-Discover Free Music to Download · · Score: 1
Well, maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but my site provides sheet music "open sourced" for the public. I wouldn't call anything on the site "classical" as in Mozart or Haydn, but there's solo 'cello music, quintets and concerti. Many of the works have recordings, hopefully more will in the future.

I'll be re-opening the site May 1st. for now, you can go over and vote on which piece gets released first, or visit the old site.

Mr Johansen, why did you recently take a job with Apple?

  11. Re:ESRL at UNT on The Blind Fragging the Blind · · Score: 1

Perhaps a dumb question, but is CEMI involved with this project at all? Anyone at the college of music involved? This is the kind of project I would have died to be a part of as an undergrad.

  12. Re:John Cage on DRM for 1'3" of Silence · · Score: 1

Perhaps I oversimplified. I meant that 4'33" is not a "silent" piece as is so often claimed. The composer bristled at folks referring to his "four thirty-three" as "the silent piece."

  13. Re:John Cage on DRM for 1'3" of Silence · · Score: 2, Informative
I could have sworn the Cage 4'33" was usually performed by memory. So while the sound of the piano lid opening and closing, perhaps the performer placing his watch on the stand might be heard, there should be no pages turning.

You are correct, however, that the point of the Cage piece is environmental noise, a concept I'm sick of explaining.
