  1. LaTeX worked for me on How To Enter Equations Quickly In Class? · · Score: 1

I took notes in LaTeX for all four years of college, including upper-level math and CS courses. It worked fine for me. Once you get used to it, typing most symbols is just as quick as writing them. Long formulas or lots of embedded fractions and things make it more difficult, but you can still type it pretty quickly, especially if you don't worry about compiling it as you go (which I did, and which was perhaps a bad idea since it does slow you down).

As some other people here have suggested, you can also define new commands to help you. One class I was in started using a lot of diagonal matrices, so after being slowed down a bit the first time I defined a new command that would easily let we write diagonal matrices. You can similarly define new keywords or languages or whatever you need to help you stay on top of things.

It might not work for everyone, but if you type fast and know LaTeX well it is easy and can work well.

Wow, this is great. The images are better than what they have for Google Maps, at least for my house (I can zoom in a lot farther). And the tilting and rotating are really fun. They have a few famous sightseeing places included by default, and just rotating and zooming around the Three Sisters or Yosemite was almost breathtaking. Integrating with their direction and local services is probably a good idea, though I doubt I'll use it much, but the images themselves are very well done. Good job, Google.

  4. My thoughts: the bad and the good on Supreme Court Rules against Grokster · · Score: 4, Insightful

The judgment is available here (linked to from here). That includes the summary, Souter's opinion, and the two concurring opinions. Other people have already talked about the important parts of Souter's opinion, but I found the concurrences just as interesting (though less important).

The first concurrence, Ginsburg's (page 30 of the above file), sounded pretty dangerous to me. It lists over a page of evidence for non-infringing uses (pages 34-35) and then immediately dismisses at all without considering it. It doesn't even talk of the dangers to new technologies. But the last paragraph is the scariest. "If, on remand, the case is not resolved on summary judgment in favor of MGM... the Court... should reconsider, on a fuller record, its interpretation of Sony's product distribution holding. Now, IANAL at all, but that sounds pretty bad.

The second concurrence (page 38), also by three judges, is a lot nicer to me. Pages 42 and 44 have long lists of non-infringing uses including books, Linux software, and things licensed under Creative Commons. It even says that Grokster is protected by the Sony standard. It goes on to talk about how the Sony standard has been a fairly good one. It talks of how both non-infringing uses of Grokster and use of legal programs (like iTunes) will grow. It's still a concurring opinion, but the tone is much more mindful of protecting technology and looking forward to the future, a view that was missing from the first concurrence.

Wow, I can't wait for this. The graphics don't look too amazing -- they're nice, of course, but to me, they're not much better than the previous ones. But of course, I never played Civilization games for the graphics. All the new stuff in Civ IV sounds sweet. A more fluid government should be really fun, and while religion is a lot like the old system of government, a few of the tweaks seem interesting. The ability to jump around the tech tree more will be nice, and great units seems like a good extension of Wonders. The base gameplay will probably be the same, so it won't be too different, but it does look very nice.

Not only that, but he chose a great numbering scheme for TeX. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TeX :

TeX has an idiosyncratic version numbering system. Since version 3, updates have been indicated by adding an extra digit at the end of the decimal, so that the version number asymptotically approaches . The current version is 3.141592. This is a reflection of the fact that TeX is now very stable, and only minor updates are anticipated. Knuth has stated that the "absolutely final change (to be made after my death)" will be to change the version number to , at which point all remaining bugs will become features.

So it's both useful and cool.

  11. Re:TV Series on Fansubbers Under Fire · · Score: 1

That's what I thought two years ago. Back when it first started airing it was popular and seemed like the sort of thing American companies would love to license. But con after con went by without anyone picking it up, and now two years later no one has. I still think it will be licensed; it just surprises me they didn't do it long ago.

  12. Hard work on Fansubbers Under Fire · · Score: 3, Interesting

The most telling thing to me is that fansubbers sub series because they enjoy them, not because they want to try to earn money off them. It seems like most commercial releases just do elaborate dubs and stick on a few trailers for other series. But as the article mentions, they don't put the effort into it that fansubbers do. There's no painstakingly yet beautifully done karaoke, no pretty and easy-to-read color-changing fonts, no translations for all the onscreen signs or Japanse jokes. And most commercial releases have a fair number of grammatical errors in their subtitles, which personally annoys me. I understand that things like these probably don't both most of their audience, which is why they don't do them, but it would be nice to see a US studio put as much effort into their releases as fansubbers do. If you really love a series, it shows.

  15. Voting at Stanford on Election Day Discussion · · Score: 1

I went to watch the poll opening procedures for a class at Stanford, and I wasn't very impressed. The DREs were left sitting out in an unlocked room overnight where someone could easily tamper with them. Even just removing the seals could seriously delay voting at that location. The poll workers also made some mistakes when they were setting up the machines, such as not resealing the button that can close the polls on a machine and not writing down the serial number of the seal on each machine. This of course doesn't prove that DREs are a bad form of technology, but it does show that it would not be at all hard to shut down a polling place temporarily. Not to mention that some requirements were not met.

  20. Re:easy on First Java AP Computer Science Exam Complete · · Score: 1

Yeah, teachers do play a big part. People at my school always get ridiculously low scores on this test because of our teacher. I mean, he apprently didn't even teach the marine biology case study this year. Though I think it also has something to do with the fact that none of the kids are motivated at all....

Actually, my main problem when I took it was with the free response. I had to rewrite my code and insert stuff so much I bet it was unreadable. It's too bad you have to write it all by hand and can't use computers and a compiler like you normally do. Though of course if they let you do that, there'd be a lot of cheating.

But I don't want one too heavy, and I do want to install Linux on it. Are these gaming laptops worth it for the extra price and weight, or would I be best just getting a top-end Dell or IBM laptop? They should be very good too, and I'd think the hardware would be more standard.

  22. My Thoughts on Modern Day Gamer Documentary · · Score: 5, Interesting

The documentary didn't seem all that helpful to me. Just a couple of gamers defending themselves, but there's not much substance. Though I'd never heard of "Diabalo II." =)

I'm a gamer (though not as serious as these guys), but since none of my friends play, it is a bit antisocial. But, then again, since they don't want to play that's just as much their fault. Or something like that. I'd think playing a game for a couple of hours with friends is FAR better than going to a movie... since it's dark and you can't talk, it's no different than if you went by yourself.

But I play my games for the story, generally. So the way I see it, playing an RPG is like reading a good book (or a bad book, as the case may be). I also like strategy games, and those are possibly the most "intelligent" games there are. I've certainly learned more from Civilization II and Starcraft than I have from lots of things we do in school....

I haven't played Animal Crossing yet (I know, I'm a bad person), but I'm really excited about this. It might not have the best graphics or storyline, but it looks like just playing it will be fun, and that's all you really need in a game.

  24. Fansubs on Updating the Pirate Anime FAQ · · Score: 1

So, what do you all think about fansubs? Fansubbing licensed anime is certainly wrong, though many people still do it to save themselves money (DVDs are expensive). But what about for unlicensed anime, especially titles that will probbaly never be licensed? If it's something that would never be translated anyway, then I don't see anything wrong with letting fans watch it. As for the more popular series that are likely to be licensed, it really depends on the fans. The fans who go out and buy the DVDs or watch it on their local TV are just getting a sneak preview, but the others are getting free piracy. What do you all think?
