I'm getting this weird hijacked site instead of the regular site. I wanna read up on some info, I'm sure i can find alternative links, but what the hell is going on?
No... wait... the most pathetic was that time I was in a gaming store and saw a morbidly obese man with poor personal hygiene loudly deriding some 14-year-old kid for buying the plain dice. This is just a close second.
If I witnessed that, I would have yelled out at the guy and said "Shouldn't you be playing everquest right now?"
Hopefully the rest of the store would join in with mocking laughter.
Lemme tell you something. There is a lot more pride in building something yourself than going out and buying it premade. You actually work to get it, and there is a special feeling in that.
Right now it's about half completed. We've got TONS of pictures, and I'm making the Mame Cabinet in POV-Ray for kicks. When it's all done, we'll be making a seperate page for it all and hopefully getting it posted on/.:-)
It's too bad that this is really my friend's cabinet. In a way, I have selfishly acted as if it were my own. It's been such a project for me that I really wanna have one for myself. Unfortunatly it'll take a long time to make another. I don't know if I'll end up buying one or making one...
I have a huge problem with this because at my college there are HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of people using kazaa and stuff.
What's gunna happen? Is my college network going to get DOS'ed into oblivion? What about your college network? They all going to get massively killed by the MPAA? What if these college students need to research the internet to find some stuff, but the line is overly saturated from all the garbage?
If this actually gets passed, I hope my college net blocks all P2P software, because I don't want to have to suffer the consequences for the actions of other people.
Back in the days of Napster I'd search for live sets of Paul Oakenfold, Seb Fontaine, Pete Tong, and Paul Van Dyke. You could find huge mp3 files that go on for 2-3 hours no problem. Best of all it was all live concerts which hold no copyright (IIRC).
I suggest find one of the last working p2p programs and searching for such name artists, and include "live" to the search. The live stuff is the best. It just has a more energetic feel to it than studio recorded music.
POV-Ray is still here and the commumity is still wonderful!
I've been using POV-Ray since 1997, and by no means am I an expert at coding a complex scene. I just LOVE the program since it was my first taste at 3d graphics. Over the years I've seen people make patches and stuff, then those were combined to make MegaPov. I remember it being July 4th or so in 98 or 99 when POV 3.1 came out. Everyone was going crazy about being so excited since it was going from 3.02 -> 3.1 (IIRC, this was a while ago).
Props to everyone who made 3.5 possible, it's a long awaited update, and very well appreciated.
I am diagnosed as having minor OCD. No I don't wash my hands 1000 times a day or over-organize things. If I ever leave my computer room I check and recheck to make sure none of the cables are slightly out because I believe they could spark a fire. I do this many times a day, and If I leave the house I turn off and unplug all the computers. While I'm out I constantly imagine a fire in the house burning all my work and the like. This problem has plauged me for a few years now and it really irks me. For a while now, I've been meaning to clean out the dust in my machines, but just haven't gotten around to doing it. I should do it soon.
Curious though, does anyone else have problems like this?
I once logged packets going in and out of my machine and I generated a huge log file very fast. It was only like 200kb, but really... for an ISP to log as much as they're being asked to, they would need INCREDIBLE storage to hold it all, wouldn't they? I wonder if then ATTBI would tax me another $5 a month to pay for their storage equipement.
Well I did my part of showing off Mozilla by starting with my Dad...
So recently, that lovely klez virus ran right through my dad's computer without him even knowing it. Thanks for his email client of choice, Outlook Express (Without any patches at all) he got a whole bunch of errors when trying to send mail. People with virus scanners were sending automated messages back to my Dad informing him of klez.
As usual my Dad calls me over to fix it. I explain to him just how flawed and insecure Outlook is. How that even with all these patches you can download and install, there will be exploits popping up in no time at all. My Dad didn't like the sound of that so he asked me what his alternatives where.
I layed out the few for him, Eudora, TheBat, and Mozilla. Perfectly timed, this whole klez incident happened a few days after Mozilla 1.0 was released. I eagerly told him about this browser+email client that after 4 years of amazing development, has finally reached 1.0 status. Him not being too fazed by all this asked me what I should pick for him. I went on to explain that Mozilla was pretty much no where near open to exploition as Internet Explorer or Outlook. Right away he said show me.
I installed it for him and showed him his way around. He has a large address book which he was worried would be lost, but Mozilla imported it perfectly. Within 5 minutes he was all up to speed on how to make it work.
So at least he's using the email part of Mozilla, but I'm sure with enough time and effort I can convert him to use the browser instead of IE. He mostly cares about his bookmarks since he has about 1000 of them organized. So I showed him that Mozilla already imports them. His mini-preview of the browser has been positive so far. Now I only need to take the step further to show him that it's also safer to surf the web with Mozilla.
Do your part, tell people how much better Mozilla is at web and email.
Slashback brings you more words tonight on catching CS cheaters (and whom to credit for the software that does so)...
Huh? I didn't see anything in this article about counter-strike cheaters! Glad you didn't post who made the cheating software or else the torches would be lit by now...
Justin Frankel and his nullsoft team created the popular mp3 player for windows, winamp. It was free. It was good. AOL bought them. Justin and the nullsoft team are rich. Winamp is still good and free. It's not called AOL Winamp, the presence of AOL is not there in any new version of winamp.
Perhaps AOL buying Red Hat might not be a terrible thing. Besides, as with the many alternative mp3 players, there are other linux distrobutions out there.
Heh, do you work for J&W or something? Or just know how our system works?
I was told a while back that we are hooked up to Oshean, but nothing detailed. I would love nothing more than a faster connection than what we currently have. At night here at J&W it speeds up (2am-10am is the drunk passed out time on weekends).
And from what I gather, the network here at our school is free for any type of use, entertainment (Tribes2, yeah!) or research (Thank you MLA formatting webpages).
I'm just about to explode from the fact that I'm downloading at the speed of dialup...
(warning to moderators, slightly off topic but please don't slap me with negative karma. I got the last first post on/. before the switch over to the new comment counting system so I'm special hehe)
My college Johnson and Wales University (Providence, RI campus) currently has several 1.4mbit lines going into the seperate dorms. Each line is shared by like 350-400 people. Now figure that all of those people are running morpheus and uploading/downloading like mad fools. Right now, I'm only getting 3k/sec through websites with some bursts to 20k/sec. This is just horrible considering I haven't been near dialup or any slow connection for almost 2 years.
My friend who goes to Drexel has 160mbit I2. Downloading going less than 700k/sec is "too slow" for him.
The rumor on my campus (credible rumor) is that we're going to get a 45mbit I2 connection. I know all these morpheus users would fill it up, but I think there would be significant improvement over the current setup. I'd be a very happy for any improvement at the moment...

Is anyone else getting this?
Oh yeah...
Who would ever buy this?
NO ONE!
It seems that once again they think they can stop backing up music. Well... It's just not going to happen.
...aren't IMAX screens 1.33:1? Attack of the Clones was 2.35:1, so will they be displayed a Pan/Scan version, or the widescreen?
What if AMD starts putting in DRM too?
:-(
I guess we'll have to move over to the Mac...
Then if the Mac adapts it...
We'll have to go outside!
Considering it's 5:12am EST and I still haven't gone to bed I'd like to get my hands on some of these. :-)
Nah, it's CMU gettting the hit. They got some strong bandwidth there.

;-)
Yep, sorry to be like this, but it's still a cool project
Go ahead. Take a look around.
Look at all the different ways you are tagged to numbers.
Social Security.
Drivers License.
Date of Birth.
Bank Cards.
Credit Cards.
Phone Number.
There are more, but I can't really think since I've been on a bender all weekend.
It would be a lot nicer if just a single number could tie all these other numbers together...

So I just loaded up /. for the first time in a while only to see the words "POVRAY render farms"
:)
:)
My heart swooned joyfully. There is still life in POV-Ray
Please note my name
Back in high school several years ago I over heard a conversation that went something like this:
:)
Guy One: Hey man I heard this IRC channel got raided by the BSA!
Guy Two: What the hell? NO WAY!
Guy One: Yeah totally, like 10 boxes were taken away.
Guy Two: WTF, How can the boy scouts do that?
I couldn't help but laugh histerically at those 9th graders. I was a mean guy

To quote Jon Stewart from the daily show about the new Japanese Robotic cats...
"...whose hairballs are real. [Pause]. But he is not."
as for dialup, well, im stuck with it at home. good thing too otherwise id still be spending 4 hours a day on IRC... :)
I'm a 24/7 IRC llama. It _really_ cuts into productivity, and I can't leave it.
