  6. Could be dangerous on Leave Outer Space to the Millionaires · · Score: 3, Insightful

It seems to me that as soon as we leave space to the wealthy adventurers, the discoveries made from such exploration are put in the position of becoming private property. The wealthy will claim the newly discovered planets, asteroids, mineral deposits, alien technology, etc. as their own. Idealls what we would do is establish an international cooperative effort(contributions not neccisarily monitary) to continue space exploration and all members of the society take one giant chill pill so that they can relize that there are bound to be dangerous in exploring a new frontier, but the explorers accept these risks and would never wish for the exploration to stop because of their loss of life.

Though it is true this does not reflect the net aid provided it paints an interesting alternative to looking at the issue. Though the US provides a large dollar amount, it is not as great a percentage of the GDP as other countries provide. Obviously the other nations do not have the means to provide equivilant amounts but the fact they provide a greater percentage of their GDP serves to debunk all the self congratulation that we Americans do when we claim "We cary every other nation on our shoulders". We are not the only nation providing aid, nor do we have as great a commitment to it as other nations.

    oh oh let me!
Saudi Arabia gives a greater percentage of its gross national product to foreign aid that any other nation in the world. Following Saudi Arabia is Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Even countries like Luxembourg give 2x that of the United States. Per capita we spend less on forign aid than any of these countries. So what's so special about us? These countries are certainly not economic power houses but still manage to find the generosity to provide more of their money to forigners.

  11. Retail Respect on Harry Potter and the Entertainment Industry · · Score: 3, Insightful

It seems to me that there are two commercial camps that have very different methods of treating the consumer. One camp, consisting of the RIAA, MPAA, major media etc. has somehow established the mentality that we are OBLIGED to consume their products. They figure we can not live withou what they provide( at unreasonable cost and restriction ) and that we know it. Not only do we KNOW that we must have what they provide, but we WANT it. In short, they are not serving us, they do not respect us as discerning consumers.
The other camp, such as independent bands, movie studios, book publishers etc. treat consumers with the respect they deserve. They recognize that people will use good (or at least some) judgment in their decisions and buy quality and originality. They are not requiered to purchase any one provider's product and thus the providers recognize the need to truly differentiate themselves from the rest.
Sadly, though I'm not sure how, the method which does not serve the customers seems to be winning

  14. Some musing on Bio-Warriors and Implant Freaks · · Score: 3, Interesting

The author states that, undoubtably, the number of MMORPGs will expolode in the coming years, and I am inclined to agree. I am not sure if this is such a good thing however. I for one have always enjoyed a good single player game such as Marathon, Baldurs Gate, and Warcraft. Suddenly games are being created that have either a very weak single player component or none at all. Will single player games be phased out completely? I certainly hope not because at some times I simply do not want to be interacting with others while playing a game. This leads to an interesting question; will single player games become taboo and seen as anti-social? After the next school shooting will the media report that the kids were fans of "single player games" instead of focusing on the violence factor and thus justifying their disconnection from society? I havn't enjoyed a MMORG yet, although I used to be a huge fan of MUDS. I for one hope single player always has a strong presence.

There's an interesting connection between nerds and punkrockers, both of which i was all through high school. Both suffer from social rejection, mainly for being different, but for also for holding an attitude of superiority( justified or not ). They tend to have closely knit groups in which features many different types of nerds or punks. Their social interaction revolved around the topics which define their group ( ex/ nerds talk about stark trek and DDR ram, punks talk about music and whether Jello Biafra should be president ). Regardless, almost every punk I know has also been a nerd at heart( a huge number love star wars for example) while most nerds I know they inevitably fall into the punk scence.
