  1. Should be a given on Are Spam Blockers Too Strict? · · Score: 2, Insightful

This should be a given. If you try to block spam, you are going to block some legitimate messages. Hopefully, your ratio of blocking spam messages against legitimate messages is good, but it will never be perfect. This is due partly because spam itself is subjective. A lot of spam messages can be picked out and determined to be a spam message by 10 out of every 10 people. But for some messages, its not that simple. It's just real subjective. Then you're asking an algorithm to use subjective logic to determine whether a message is spam or not and problems just occur. Like I said, for the most part these filters work pretty good, but its not going to be perfect and anyone that thinks so, is just not thinking straight.

I am not opposed to some degree of flagging an alleged spam message, but to discard it without the end user knowing about it is where issues begin to arise. By flagging a message, the end user is able to use their own discretion to determine whether a message is a spam message and they can do whatever they want with those messages.

This isn't to say that RBLs and spamlists are a bad idea, just if you implement one of these, then be prepared for some type of backlash. Perhaps in some cases an RBL is necessary, but to think that using an RBL you are going to stop all spam and all of your clients are going to be happy, that's just wrong.

But as far as actually writing your own notes, one should still be able to write on paper and be able to understand their own handwriting. I don't see the art of physically writing going away anytime soon.

  8. Re:Not to Berman, et. al. on Rick Berman Doesn't Know Why Nemesis Tanked · · Score: 0

I think Berman and the rest of the Star Trek production staff just started cutting corners. This started back in First Contact, when Data disabled his emotion chip. How? Where did that come from?

When I left the theater after seeing Nemesis I couldn't help but think, "This movie could have been so much better". Maybe it needed to be longer, if it did then so be it. They should have explained the fire while cloaked ship (sorry, forgot its name). Don't get me wrong, that was real interesting. But the battle scene was too short. The ship should have headed towards earth. And had a more massive battle.

The Data dying, while not completely cheesy, could have been better. I have nothing wrong with the idea, but make it mean a little bit more.

The idea was there for this movie, but it was almost as if they got half-way through the movie and thought "wow, this movie is going to be long, we better start cutting it short". It just left a lot of emptiness in me. I also think they were trying to mock Star Trek II too much, without being obvious. But they paid too much attention to not being obvious that it was actually obvious.

In closing, I too hope this is the last TNG movie. It is time for this series to rest in peace.

I can see where they can have their advantages though. Mainly the fact that they don't use ink to write on. This has become a problem in most classes, especially Calculus class where you can't read what is on the board because the marker doesn't write.

However, for that same reason, I'd have to say that I do not like these Smartboards. They're method of writing is similiar to a PDA, which is difficult to line up stuff that has already been written. This would not be good for a math class.

  20. Re:Try now buy later on College Students Are Buying More, Warez-ing Less · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'll have to agree with this concept. Up until a few years ago, I was downloading all the warez I could. Finally realized that I never played any of the games I downloaded, I just downloaded them to download them.

Last November, one of my friends got a copy of RtCW, I got a copy of it, to play the single player, I had the intention of buying it, just not at that moment. A few weeks later, Circuit City had it for $30, so I bought it, even though I had already beaten the game off the copy.

I think as most people grow older and more mature, they realize what buying a game means. Its like the whole concept of warezing games (and applications too, I guess) doesn't mean anything any more. If you want a game, you buy it. You might get a copy and try it, but you later buy it.

Thats my take on it anyway. Right now, I can't play any games, not with Calculus and the fact that my Winblows box has been running for close to 5wks (ph33r the power of Windows 98) and it doesn't do anything.

BTW, I wonder what the record is for most ISOs downloaded over a dialup connection? I'd bet I downloaded 50+ ISOs over dialup, back in the day (still on dialup).
