There was an Outer Limits episode where everyone had brain implants that connected them to a 'super computer'. They could all recall and information they wanted by thinking about it...basically a glorified pimp-my-ride google.

Long story short, everyone knew everything, but actually knew nothing. Server goes boom, everyone becomes stupid.

That, I think, is the underlying question of TFA. With that said, I think is it off base. The same could be said about calculators, computers in general, books even? Where would it end? A tool is a tool is a tool.

No. The difference is if you don't like McDonalds, you have other choices for your 99 cent food.

With the record industry, you don't. What the poster is saying is that the product he WANTS TO BUY doesn't exist. Therefore he has to find it less than legal ways.

THAT is what he is saying the record companies aren't getting. They aren't offering the products the consumer wants, so they aren't selling as many CDs. Instead of fixing the situation by adjusting their business model and providing the content wanted, they cry about illegal downloaders and in doing so alienate many many others.

They have created a situation of loathing, and because of their actions have really created several types of groups that hate them for different reasons. All driving to the end result of them selling less and less CDs.

As I say to my students 'if you had to have brain surgery would you prefer someone who has been through medical school, trained and researched in the field, or the student next to you who has read Wikipedia'?

This is an awful analogy, as one has nothing to do with another. What he trying to say is the information on wikipedia doesn't really give you extensive knowledge on a subject. Well, no kidding. Let me ask you this:

If I had to have brain surgery, would I prefer someone who went through medical school, or read a paper by a tenure doctor in field?

Clearly the doctor. Nothing will ever replace real experience or years of study, whether it is wikipedia or research documents, or the encyclopedia, or anything.

Wikipedia is a reference. A starting point to find out about a topic, not the end all, be all source of information. Just like any other collection of general knowledge.

Furthermore... yet experience has shown it can be wrong, incomplete, biased, or misleading

This is true for many ACCURATE sources of information across subjects. It is hard to find a truly unbiased (or misleading / no alternate agenda) history book, interpretation of literature, or explanation of just about anything non-science related. Just because it is biased or misleading doesn't make it something that shouldn't be read or taken into consideration.

Personally, it sounds like the prof is missing the point of wikipedia.

I don't think you could be further from the truth. It is true that some buyouts are not good in the long term, I would think the majority of them are good for the buying company.

I'm not a business major or anything of the sort, but applying the little I know and some common sense, I think there are many situations where a buyout would be good for both companies.

If history dictated that there is no net benefit, then it just wouldn't happen.

I also think it depends on what the end goal is. Not all buyouts occur for a financial gain, but to eliminate competition, improve public image, gain a brand name, force a publicly traded company private, gain a foothold in another industry, etc...

Historically two companies merge or one buys another in the same line of business so that way both revenue streams can be combined, but one set of management can be eliminated. This ultimately drops the bottom line and increases profits.

Perhaps someone with more experience in the area can provide concrete details, but this is just how I have understood it from the high level.

    Is the RIAA evil? yes.
Is downloading movies and songs illegal? yes.

But you're right. Pirate Bay has done nothing wrong. Sure they haven't. I'm sure they make 0 money off their site. They just want to 'stick it to the man'.

Listen, I haven't bought a song in a store for about 8 or 9 years now. I buy from sites and labels where I know the artists aren't being screwed over (typically non-mainstream artists, some really good music out there that is probably never heard in the masses). And yes, I have illegally downloaded music and movies before. I use the if I like it, I'll most likely buy it defense there...however, that makes it no less illegal. If I get caught, I'm boned like anyone else.

The fact of the matter is there are ways of putting the RIAA and what not out of business, or insight them to change their ways using legal methods. It may take a while, but we're starting to see the fruits of our labor. If they don't change their business model, they will be the ones boned.

But no matter how evil they are, copyright infringement is still copyright infringement. Why don't you write a song or book or create a painting, and I'll copy it. Lets see how quick you change your tune.
