  1. Patch Management products are your answer. on Scheduling Large Scale Server Upgrades/Outages? · · Score: 1

Any decent, current PM system (Altiris PM, MS-WSUS, MS-SMS, etc.) - using a SQL or other database back end - should have a method to identify the devices to patch and build a collection and allow you to specify a certain time frame for applying the patch to the selected groupings on separate schedules and perform any necessary reboots all in an automated fashion. (Sorry about the run-on sentence).

Altiris (or any other vendor, this is just the one I am most familiar with) would probably LOVE to have the opportunity to get their products in the door by doing a limited Proof-Of-Concept PM implementation. Or, you could download a demo copy of Altiris' Client Management Suite http://www.altiris.com/Download.aspx ) with a 30-day set of licenses and POC it yourself (1GB Mem Windows Server 2kN with SQL Server 2kN required). ( PS - They also have a Server Management suite with plugins that are appropriate for Dell and HP Servers.)

Of course one would hope that with 7k devices you would already have such a system in place already.

    Best of luck.

  2. SS1 has been at Smithsonian since July on SpaceShipOne to Join Smithsonian Collection · · Score: 4, Informative

This is actually an old story. It had been reported earlier in the year that this was going to occur.

The SS1 Prototype has actually been at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Annex (Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum (UHASM)) in Dulles, VA since late July / early August awaiting transfer to the downtown Washington, DC center.

For those who would have wanted to see it there, while it was not on active display, it was there at the west end of the building under a great big blue tarp. They had it under the tarp because the director of the UHASM did not want to allow it on display because he "did not want to upstage the downtown facility's unveiling". For what it's worth, since it was there (and its not hard to recognize it under the tarp), I thought that it would not have hurt to have been not on active display but out from under the tarp and just have a temporary placard stating "Awaiting transfer to downtown facility for official showing".

    1. Use a rubber grommet passthrough from the exterior grade mounted enclosure for the video feed to a CRT. LCDs don't like freezing temps (but if you insist on using a LCD panel make sure you use a space heater in the area that is temperature controlled and keep the temp above 50 F or take the monitor inside as you probably wont be working in your shop at those temperatures anyway).

This is a special version for WRT54GS units only (8MB flash required) created by Nikki Chumakov.

Use it at your own risk. It works for me, but I cannot guarantee it will work for you and don't damage your router.

This version is intended for developers. No new WWW interface items were added, no user friendly features. All new features
have to be configured from the CLI or rc_startup nvram variable.

Stock 5.2.3 bugs were not fixed except for a minor bug with ash prompt.

    ******************* WARNING*******************

    1. DONT try to flash this firmware on non-GS units even if you think it has 8MB flash. It won't work and make damage your router.

    2. Flash stock 5.2.3 first. DONT FLASH THIS FIRMWARE UNTIL YOU FLASH SVEASOFT 5.2.3-pre FIRST AND MAKE IT WORK. 5.2.2, 5.2.4 and so on won't work.

The problem that most retailers are concerned with is not so much tracking you (don't get me wrong that is there) as with preventing shrinkage (i.e. theft).

Having worked in retail, and having had to apply those exploding dye tags and alarm tags on garments as a management type, if I can avoid that pain by having unique RFID tags embedded in the clothes which identify the item, type, size, and serial number of the items, this would save me time and money.

  12. Honda Civic Hybrid driver CAN get 40-50mpg on Hybrid Cars Don't Live Up to Mileage Claims · · Score: 1

You CAN get the 40-50mpg fuel economy in this car, the problem is that most people's driving habits won't let them achieve it.

My wife and I have both driven this car.

When I drive the car I get about what the blogger gets as gas mileage (36mpg)(I drive moderately aggressively).

HOWEVER, when my wife drives it, she has been able to get in the 50+ mpg range... She does not drive aggressively at all. (She has NEVER been in an accident or had a speeding ticket.) The way she says she manages it is:
    1) Stay farther back from other vehicles.
    2) Take more time braking
    3) Don't switch back and forth rapidly between the gas and brakes
    4) Most importantly DON'T GUN the engine for acceleration. This is the BIGGEST factor in the whole equation.

I have found that, when I try to follow these rules, I can get better mileage. I can get closer to what the EPA says the mileage should be and what my wife gets when she drives. But, I can't QUITE get there because I seem to love to floor the accelerator pedal. :-\

So, I think that driving style is the key to better performance with these cars.
