    Explain the emulator scene then.

While I can see how SOME people might think this, ALOT of people enjoy playing older games, regardless of how blocky, or downright ugly they are.

Just about every gamer I know with a computer plays, or has played emulated games. Hell, some companies are even releasing these titles TO play emulated on current consoles.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to emulate a current system effectively. If I did have a bunch of ps1 games and I was thinking about getting a ps2, you'd bet that'd be a motivator... I personally don't like have a whole bunch of consoles cluttering up the place, and having to switch between them.

  2. Re:Xbox hard drive - or lack thereof on Next-Gen Console Rumors Summarized, Discussed · · Score: 1

Actually, the harddrive is also used as a cache for some games... since it's faster then the xbox's dvdrom drive by far. And of course it's used extensively by the homebrew scene for emulators, games, apps, etc.

To put mp3s on your xbox for play, you'd need either a modchip, or you'd have to flash the xbox's TSOP with a hacked bios. (then use xbox media player/center to play the mp3s... which incidently is also good for viewing images, listening to shoutcast streams, playing movies, etc.)

The xbox is capable of doing far more then microsoft WANTS it to do, and has a homebrew that matches no other console. I believe ms will try even harder to lock down the xbox next, including possibly not having a harddrive.

If they decide on not including a harddrive (or not being able to add a fully functional one (including booting, and good transfer speeds) I will not be getting one... simply because altho I do enjoy some of the xbox titles, it's not enough to make me buy one... the media playing capabilities, and it's ability to easily be a part of my home theatre are what drew me to it.

Incidently, I don't buy other consoles, because of the same reasons, so it's not xbox's games, it's the games in general. Most games i like to play come out for PC anyways.

I'd say drug dealers are only blamed when they are involved in commiting the crime.. ie: they pulled the trigger.

Your comparison there would only be valid if someone from Rockstar had gone on a "GTA-style" killing spree.

I've listened to too many "why" questions tonight over this.

Why? Because there is a DEMAND for it.

I hated xbox until I got one, thought they were just more "m$" crap.

Now that I have one and it's 'modded' i absolutely love it.

It's my video player(thanks to xbmp), my mp3 machine, my shoutcast tuner, along WITH my games machine... with most of the content streamed off my PC.

My friends who were the same, hating the xbox for it's origins, and the fact that it "just a pc" now are jealous of my xbox.

it boots in seconds, it's GREAT for playing music/video on my stereo/tv, and it fits in better with my home theatre then anything I had before (despite it's size).

I run linux on it as well.... why? well because it makes a nice little box for it... browsing the web or reading email on the go, I can kick back and relax at the tv while doing this.

Now with this windows ce 'port' which I have tried (and it is still a ways from being fully functional), well I can have a usable OS with all this in SECONDS compared to xbox linux, plus I have access to all the windows ce apps as well.

It's just another great choice... especially for a sub-$200 machine (in canadian dollars anyways)

I see so much questions asked "why" these days that I really think /. must have changed... I mean we went from a people who questioned "when" to those who question "why".

While I use lynx/links myself for somethings, face facts... it is not a full fledged browser. So because of the implementation of an html reader you are bashing the poor guy and throwing in microsoft to boot.

You're not even bothering to think about all the other full featured browsers that do scale fonts and are not MS products.. such as Mozilla and Opera. Indeed they don't even have to be running on windows.

In a console based pdf or postscript viewer the same could be said as your arguement, but generally those formats are considered to have vector scalable fonts.

There's a difference between free public speech, and invasion of privacy. Would you call it free speech if someone broke into your house and talked dirty to your underage daughter?

These lists are not about stemming free speech... they're not stopping anyone from setting up a webpage or some other form of information server, they're about stopping invasive practices from people... shoving their CRAP down other peoples throats.

As for DRM and p2p, well those are completely seperate issues, the only thing in common is someone wants to stop or continute them. DRM defeats my legal right to use the music I *license* fairly. As a Canadian I pay $.21 cents on every blank (with no choice on the matter) to gain some of these rights (Canada actually grants us some nice rights for this levy), and their copy protection schemes turn around and (IMHO) ILLEGALLY stop me from doing what I have PAID for. Don't give me that crap that it's only $.21 a cd and they're not recouping lost income, because I think maybe 1 in a hundred cds I buy gets made into an audio cd... hell, they should give most of the levy to the porn producers :)

As for p2p, well this is a tricky issue, that has been stated before... the actual systems are not illegal, it's what the user does with them. It's unfair and not feasible to outlaw everything that can be used for illegal purposes, so I don't have the solution to that, but the actual technology shouldn't be condemned for this.

    all this wireless talk.

Sure, wireless is a great system for some things, but it nowhere near approaches the speed of fibre. This kind of shortsightedness in the past has cost us, why let it again?

(640k anyone? 32MB harddrive? those are just a couple that came to mind right away)

With a wireless solution, you're looking at buying it, and implementing it, then upgrading every couple/few years if you want to keep the bandwidth up to what other areas will (probably) be using. With fibre, lay it, and maintain it and you still have enough left over to keep you going for ages. Even when that slows down, divide the network in half, each their own network with their own uplink. Boom. Doubled your available bandwidth.

Don't kid yourself thinking we (as a people) won't want more and more bandwidth. If I had the bandwidth I have today (DSL) at home 7 years ago, I would have thought that it was the cat's meow. Now I get by, it's decent. Actually thought of getting a cable modem as well so I could have two *decent* pipes here.

Warez trading, p2p, and porn asside, even legitimate usages have been getting bigger all the time.

(SUSE 8.0 anyone? 8 cds for the full release. Even slackware, my distrib of choice is 3 now for everything).

Couple this on the fact that one day the mpaa/riaa might get it right and we could have huge content delivered to our homes via these pipes. I'd rather be able to watch a movie (and save it for later) while it's downloading, then wait a couple hours. Sometimes it's just a spur of the moment... "hey, wouldn't it be cool to see this?"

Even 802.11g won't bring us this. Fibre will put it alot closer (altho it's not a miracle answer, it is a step in the right direction). We probably won't have wireless that can compare until like 802.11zz894t Rev. 3 or something.

I won't even run wireless at home just because I'm such a speed freak, I don't want to wait.. .and why should I if there's an alternative. I'm looking at replacing my 100MB/s switch & nic's with gigabit stuff for just that reason. It'd be nice to VNC into a box and get near-realtime ability. Granted, not everyone is like me in this respect, but alot are, and the way the internet community is going, alot more will be.
