It's not limited to just MMORPGs -- a while back I was reading a thread on the GuitarNoise forums about musical genres. Someone referenced Surf music and I almost laughed out loud when I saw the artist cited as an example: Richard Dale.

If you've ever been to his website or seen him in concert, you'll know that Dick Dale is definitely a "Dick", not a "Richard".

I posted a comment to that effect, only to see the references in my post ALSO listed as "Richard". Seems that the BB software in use at the time had a "kiddie filter" turned on.

Caller: So, whaddya say, want a new job?
    Receiver: Go away.
C: Nope, I'm gonna stay on the line all day.
R: But I don't wanna talk to you.

I can't abide pop music. Top-40 radio is horrid. Blathering, inane DJs suck.

I'm not disputing the value of web-based word-processing software -- being able to work from any (net-connected) computer is indeed A Good Thing.

My point is that having multiple, possibly un-synchronized copies of ANY document is a logistical nightmare. Having lived through too many cases of "it works on MY system" where the problem turns out to be different versions of the "same" source code makes me cringe at the thought of anything other than One True Copy of a document being "live" at any given time.

For groupwork, a collaborative workspace is ideal.

IIRC, the "interesting" thing about the Transmeta chips was that they did a lot of things differently than other chips out there.

Things such as very low power consumption (important for mobile/embedded computing), cooler operation (same application), and some very nifty things in software (within the chip, not at the OS level), allowing them to run x86 instructions while being a very different architecture underneath.

Eclipse is a great free GUI for software that doesn't either have a user interface or run on a server.

You have (partially) answered your own question.

Not everyone who programs in Java is creating UI components.

I've been developing in Java exclusively since 1997, and have created more non-GUI code than GUI code -- server-side, middleware, etc. -- I've been fortunate enough to have people who actually like (and are good at) doing GUI code around to handle those things for me.
