I'm recalling this from memory but, I think Lazar got the idea for Element 115 from a Popular Science magazine article from the 1960's. A scientist had theorized about the island-of-stability in elements around this number. It looks like we may have to wait until elements 117 and 118 to see if this island appears. It could be a boon for science, but I'm not holding my breath for "anti-gravity" properties just yet.
I used to be a research geek with a $250K slush budget. My company stock went into the toilet and then I got the axe. Now I test software at that same company. No budget, no respect, no fun.
I had to distinct honor of Bill crapping on one of my projects in public simply because he didn't invent it first. He had a habit of looking down his nose at other people's work.
SunLabs is full of bright and innovative people, Bill's contributions are for the history books.
Sun's new innovations aren't just coming from the Labs either, they are coming from other parts of the company too. I think this is an opportunity to buy stock, not sell.
Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out Bill.
The preceeding statements are my opinion only and should not be construed as anything else.
Mad Hatter rocks!!!!!!
> This does not bode well for Sun. Bill Joy was truly a visionary and they are going to have to make significant changes in R&D strategy to compensate for this loss. Note that SUNW stock is reacting accordingly, I expect we'll see $2.80 before the end of '03.
The article was a great read. It reminds me of a story about some 'techies' that built the shoe computer that helped them predict where a Roulette marble would drop. Apparently they would use the computer to calibrate the wheel's spin and the marble against each other and then try to calculate the region of the wheel the ball would land. I figure that if you can at least know which half of the wheel you're going to land the marble in, you've already got a hedge on the house.
If anyone has any links to that story please post.
Someone should make a "Ocean's Eleven" style movie about this type of stuff.
Personally, I stick to Craps. The odds are nearly even if you stick to the Pass line. Most people I've seen playing the game love to play all the sucker bets instead. At least I usualy walk out with my original money in my pocket and a few free beers in my tummy.:)
Hmmm... very cool. Loved the trailer.
The CGI shots still look pretty 'beta' to me.
But I guess they have another five months to
work on it. At the same time, I love to see the
early stuff. Its nice to see the work in process sometimes.
Damn! I thought finally that they were
going to make a movie about the operating system.
"Our hero/dev/null must go on a quest to vanquish the rogue daemons and a few zombie processes of the land of Sol and free the paniced "Kernel dev Mod" from the havoc caused by his embarasing problem with leaky memory."
Throw a few cute magical anime hero girls in there and I think Solaris would be a real hit!:)
Ummm... isn't Star Office the 'alternative' to MS office, (and free)? So this is a non-cost effective alternative to an free-alternative? It truely is the end of the world. I'm going back to vi.:)
Finally!!!
Now all I need is one of these gadgets and a
RealDoll ( or even a Stepford wife robot) and
I won't have to deal with the bitching and
moaning... except my own bitching and moaning
because I have to reboot wife 3.5.6 three times
a day.:)
How could a story like this get into the /. page when is was 'news' two years ago. Sheez....
I feel like Bill Murray in Ground Hog day.
Yes. Why is this news? I know of a light in San Jose that had this feature 8 years ago.
BTW. I just found out that Al Gore invented the internet.

Errr.... Oh you mean computer hardware...
Aren't they doing computation with DNA these days?

Can't this guy use a phone? All he needs to do is testify, he's not on trial here. Don't people testify via telephone all the time?
Or maybe they can set up a Chat room for the testimonial?
All this technology and lawyers are still banging rocks together.
1. Geraldo Rivera
2. An idiot waving a flash light.
3. Osama Bin Laden.
4. Pyramid worker's forgotten lunch.
5. John Clease.. "Excuse me, but I seem to be stuck..."
Thanks for posting that link!!
Great to see that there's a book out on that. Gonna have to read that one.

I assume it ships with CDE by default?
CDE = Communist Desktop Environment

Oh sure give Hemos all the credit...
;-)
It was my school project, my popsiclesticks, and other 'art' supplies and....
I really want to know how you knew about the hamster. I really did bury it in a box that I made.
I don't have any Macs but would refer to them as "doorstops" for legal purposes. :)
It avoids alot of confusion.

Actually it occured to me that Soylent Green
could be made of Astronauts in the future.
If they send three astronauts up but two
well fed astronauts come back... I think
we have our proof.
Soilent green is made of people!!!
:)
Go to an adult toy store. I'm sure you'll find something suitable for a while. Silicone technology has gotten pretty good lately. :)
