    I don't mean to be argumentative here or anything but maybe if the line "Tivos aren't a VCR replacement, they change the way you watch TV." is correct, that's the very reason they are not more popular. Maybe people don't need or want to change the way they watch TV. Watching TV is pretty much a lazy act. So maybe people don't really wat to work to watch TV. I.e. they sit down, they channel surf (a SINGLE button), then veg for an hour and turn it off. If that's what TV is to most people then PVR's will never ever take off.

    I agree. It's come to a point where. If I'm available to watch something I like. I will, but if I'm not.. so what? There are a lot of shows I like, but if I don't have the time to watch them when they air, how am I going to have the time to watch 6 hours of them when they stack up by the end of the week?

    Other than the people that record their daily soaps while at work (Though I guess there are plenty of those). Most people probably don't really care enough about TV to go through the expense and effort to use a PVR (Let alone their VCR vith it's PLUS codes).

    Yes, funny. But who the hell says that they have to open up the fscking netbios ports? Or anything other than port 80???? And even better, if they block incoming everything (boo hoo can't run servers in the airport) and block the internal subnet from talking to anyone else on the internal subnet then NOTHING you cite could possibly be a problem. That's like 5 minutes setup with any proper firewall software.

    But I guess they're all too stupid to have thought of anything as simple as that...
    (Frighteningly though, you may be right)

    Who the hell is holding a gun to your head forcing you to upgrade? I've got a 95 laptop a 98 computer and two XP computers and they all get along just fine. Is there something wrong with being able to have the latest and greatest when I buy a new machine? Why would I want to by a computer in 2000 and have Windows 95 installed on it becuase the government at slashdot's insistance says that they can only rev the OS once every 5 years?

    I'd hate to be a poor beleagured Linux user that has to upgrade his kernel every two weeks because of yet another catastrophic kernel bug. I guess it heeps the Red hat paid tech support people employed! There, how do you like the hyperbole?

    They do still have to pay off 2 billion in debt. They could easily collapse in the next several years without making a dent in that. The only good news is that it's not getting any worse. They could easily up and collapse at any time and it will be that way for the next 5 years at least. Not anywhere near as shiney and sugery as Katz want's us to believe... (Does he own stock in them or something?)

    Once again, listen closely. Just because someone says something, does not mean it is so. Lots of people say things that aren't true. Maybe YOU trust him, but do I trust you? Maybe it IS an experiment in hiding shit in TCP segments and he's only telling people it counts keys.

    Virtually every virus is based on someone saying something is one thing (A cool fireworks screen saver) and doing something else. And that has happened thousands of times on the net. Why can't this be any different?

    Now of course it's probably NOT that, but you must see that he's strayed awfully close to the credability limit. In every other case, keystroke logging is very bad, people will automatically be suspicious. And they SHOULD be. There are far too many evil people on the net to just be DLing stupid little programs willy-nilly off the net.

    But WHY? For 1/2 the price you can (next week) get a dual AMD 1.6 Gig and a GF4 and be able to run all your linux software without so much as a recompile...

    In fact with the famous apple 6-8 week delivery times you could have it 5-7 weeks earlier as well.

    Has there been any quality widescreen cinimatogrphy done in the last 20-30 years in the US? It seems to be a lost art.

    And the answer to that is probably "No" since gcc has been hacked repeatedly to allow for the writing of "optimized" code in the kernel. A deplorable practice at best. c has been embraced and extended in gcc just for the (Linux) kernels sake.

    2) So if I don't buy a windows game I really want to play. Wait 6-12 months for loki to MAYBE port it. Then they dont, then the game is no longer distribution, (Which was like 95% the case) I'm fucked. I'm not going to purposely fuck myself for some shit company like Loki. If they can't get developer support and do a simultanious release of a game, then they deserved to dissapear. They weren't providing much value at all.

    Linux needs to come to me, not the other way around. I'm not going to spend 5-10 years of my life doing without, hoping, waiting and praying for Linux to meet my needs (gaming, coding, music production and art). And there's no reason I or anyone else should. Linux is not a charity case. Linux is also not (as /. posters point out repeatedly) a communist state.

    At around 7 or 8 I had the same idea playing with a couple of permanent magnet motors. But I knew that to work you'd have to put a larger gear on the powered motor to get the generator motor to spin faster and make more power than the motor was using. I was thwarted by the fact that I couldn't find a bigger gear for one of the motors in the junk drwaer. BUT I KNEW IT WOULD HAVE WORKED! :)

    How can you even do that considering the chipset on the MB is also different between the CPUs? You are automaticaly testing the "system" not the "CPU" no matter what memory you used becuase the MB/Chipset is different. :(

    People who get sick watching television are suffering from one of two conditions. Sensitivity to the 60hz flickering (Same with most flourescent bulbs) Or from motion sickness from seeing motion on the TV but not feeling it in theie ears. It has NOTHING to do with EMR...

    People that see such crack pot statements as this guys then think "Oh my mother had that, she got sick watching TV, it must be true" are guilty of the WORST form of insanity, complete lack of rational thought.

    Depends on the program. Used based taxes are also regressive. As long as the service is something that is not absolutely necessary. Imagine if everyone had to explicitly pay for the roadwork in front of their house? Want to use your road? It's a fixed fee of $500 a year. Well fine if your making 30 grand or more. Pretty shitty if your making 5 grand a year...

    As usual, things are about 10x as complicated as anyone on /. ever considers.

    And what if the /.ing causes a buisness to go a couple of days without it's real customers being able to access the site because of the millions of lookie-loos and rubber-neckers? Merely running a /. article can cost a person (With rate charges on their small hosted web site) or a buisness hundreds or thousands of dollars. And just because Joe Blow has something cool on his web site doesn't mean that he HAS to pay for unimited bandwidth just in case he gets /.ed now does it? SO then. Posting a /. story IS frequently harmful and could easily be described DoS "attack".

    Yeah I see the trend. Company X puts out an innovative and well made product. They get popular, start making money. Then they get LAZY. Thinking they got it all sewn up. Then MS (Or some other) comany comes by and starts copying. It takes years and several tries but by working long and hard at it they end up with a better product. The original lazy company notices too late that they've been passed by, customers slowly trickle over to the new company. The old company then gives up rather than actually try any harder and blame the other company for being "unfair". Yeah I see that pattern a LOT.

    According to the article the price per KWH for this Coleman thing is arount $10/KWH!!! (A refill costs $100 for 1.2KW for 8-10 hours) That's insanely expensive. It does seem that a methanol system would be considerable cheaper.
