Not necessarily. Honda has the Civic Si which runs off of natural gas. Think it would be hard to find a filling station? For $1000 you can retrofit your gasline to be a pump. Pretty cool if you ask me. I especially like Honda saying that the exhaust from the car is cleaner than ambient air in some cities. Kinda disturbing.
HDTV looks amazing. Thats great. But, the price is amazingly high as well. When (or rather if) all the stations broadcast only in HDTV, I am POSITIVE that cable companies will give/let people rent set-top boxes that will translate HDTV signal into what 'normal' TVs now will understand. Cable companies and stations can't afford to lose out on the hundreds of millions of customers simply because they don't have the money to buy a compatible TV. The only reason to buy an HDTV now is if you are addicted to great quality video... but, the hassles of there not being a clear-cut HDTV standard make this close to a waste of money 5 years down the road.
This Mod doesn't really interest me. An NES Mod that would interest me is one that would make the thing work! I have an NES from prob mid-late 80s and it only works like 1/20 tries. What a pain. I would love to have some mod where you could change out some part or mod the connection or something to make the thing work better. Anyone have any links/ideas? Blowing on the cartridges just doesn't seem to work anymore.
miami and the surrounding areas already have to do this. I don't think this is as big of a deal as most of you make it out to be though, since you have to use the area code when dialing with a cell phone anyway. Oh well

DSL Amidst Phone Wars

The whole argument revolves around how DSL is defined. To most of us Slashdotters (and consumers in general), we see DSL as a seperate entity from local phone service. This probably stems from dial-up being seperate from the local phone service. However, one can make the argument (and it seems SBC has) that DSL is a service add-on, therefore cannot by transferred when you switch local carriers. So, think of it as Caller ID... you lose caller id if you switch to a carrier that doesn't offere caller ID. The technology is there for SBC to still offer caller id to you, but, you don't have their local service anymore.
What is the use in having so many links, when all we want to see is the actual article? I take it as a jab at my computing abilities that the poster must link to the University of Alberta, since I can easily just remove all but the meat of the URL. I guess it doesn't really matter either way, but, just seems kinda useless to me.
I can't wait to get this technology with a "copy-protected" cd that won't play in computers. Unless they would do it to try to get information from the people who break the copy protection by using a sharpie...
"When I first learned, my boyfriend didn't show me the proper technique. I have sense developed CTS and now I can't satisfy my boyfriend near as well. Thanks to these gloves, I can go on for hours, without the slightest pain in my wrist. Both my boyfriend and I are happy now." -Colleen, Age 18
Or, the geek... "I used to hide the bishop 2 or 3 times a day. I developed a bad case of CTS due to my strange posture, since I was trying to hide what I was doing under the keyboard. The gloves have worked wonders and I can now make the bald man puke more efficiently and with less pain. Thanks IMAK!"
Well, firewire cables were originally limited to 4.5 meters, yet now they can get to 10 meters... and longer with repeaters. So, firewire doesn't have a max cable length, supposedely, but, you lose so much by having a longer cable.
I make money off of driving kids to school and I listen to cds while I'm in the car. The kids would ask to ride with someone else if I listened to death metal or country. Should I pay some of my money I got from their parents to the RIAA, even though I already paid waaay too much for the CD?
At first I thought he said he was putting this on a 72' train and I was going to say.. wow, Slashdot has a lot of articles that only apply to a small amount of people, but, who seriously owns a 72' train. Oh well.
I mean, PS2 has all the hardware to be able to play divx files, so, it seems that making the mod chip would be hard, but not exceptionally hard. People should instead focus on getting divx players to run on PSX or Nintendo 64 (buy cartridge divxs, heh). Come on, make it harder and less usable, like the people that modify C64s...
Unfortunately, in the States, there is too much legislation limiting diesel technology, mainly due to the idea that Diesel is dirty (which it was... but not really anymore). Until those laws are changed, the States won't see any affordable, efficient diesel cars.
Ogg will never gain the usage that mp3 has seen, simply because it is too much like mp3. The common user doesn't care that the music sounds marginally better. Ogg would overtake mp3 if things stayed as they are now, but with hard drives getting bigger, connections getting faster, and all that, then I think there will be a shift to a less lossy compression scheme. I dunno if something like shn will ever fill that space, since its still a huge file, but, who knows.

If one were to be on Windows 95 since it was introduced and now get on Windows XP, there would be very little difference in the feel of it. Sure it moves/changes how some options are displayed, but it still looks exactly the same. Changing Office GUIs? I've gotten every version of Office since 95, and it is largely the same.
Lastly, NO ONE BUT GEEKS AND PENNY PINCHERS WANT LINUX. Why? because Windows does things in a more user friendly way. With RPMs, for instance, I don't get to see where the app is installing, what exactly I am installing, and there's not an easy uninstall process like Windows. Also, stuff in Linux is so much harder to do. For instance, playing DIVX movies in Linux takes some gruntwork, looking around at sites, trying to find the necessary files, whereas in Windows, you just open Windows Media and it downloads the codecs and plays, or you install the divx Playa, which can play them all. Perhaps places would offer you a choice in OSes if they felt that anyone would actually choose Linux over Windows.
If your kids want to play games online, there are very few games that work well and without major hitches in Linux. Furthermore, if your kids like to play online games made with shockwave, good luck. IMHO, Linux is better than Windows, but it still lacks the AOL-type of ease that most kids want/need.
This gets modded up to a 4, Interesting? This seems to me to have a simple answer. Where does this disdain (notice the spelling) "stem from?" Maybe because Trekkies are obsessed with Star Trek and William Shatner. Seems to me like you answered your question yourself. What should these people do instead? I dunno, maybe stop being obsessed about Star Trek? Once again, answered your own question. Troll I am, but this is ridiculous.
Frink: Uh, all you have to do is think of things that people need, but which don't exist yet. Homer: You mean like an electric blanket mobile? Frink: Uh, well... possibleh... or, you could take something that already exists, and find a new use for it. Like.. Homer: Hamburger earmuffs! Frink: Uh I suppose that would qualify.
Japan has a similar idea, although its not like the microwave plant in Sim City 2000. Instead, you have a HUGE pool, and basically focus a laser beam from space into the pool, therefore heating it up and then the steam could be harnessed for power. Pretty cool idea, but, not sure how far away from use it is. Also, tidal generators make sense in tidal areas, of course they won't work inland. Most 'environmentally friendly' ideas only work for specific areas (wind works well in windy areas, duh), but, just because it doesn't work in every situation doesn't mean that you should stick with coal and wait for a 'better' solution. Better to slow fucking up the area with smog than to wait on a magical technology.
Isn't that all Cartoon Network is these days? I stopped watching it when Johnny Quest stopped coming on and shows like thundercats were replaced by DragonBallZ. Such crap, but, that's my opinion.
looks like hybrids are it for the next few years

There are laws that try to stop pirating?
Where else could Bond meet Judy Dench?
