Permanent brain damage starts within 5 minutes of not receiving red blood cells with oxygen. So you would have to be frozen before then, and in such a way as to prevent ice crystalization from permanently damaging cells, which is not done with current cryogenic techniques. Otherwise you would lose so much of your personality, intellect, memories, and consciousness from brain damage, that even if they could regenerate all of that grey matter in the future, your brain would no longer be you, but would be someone else. (So what is the point?)
Aside from that, no matter how cheap it is to freeze someone, it's is likely going to cost a lot more to revive someone who is frozen, and regenerate their body into a functional state. How many people looking at cryogenics are budgeting for revival costs? Maybe they hope the future will be some socialist utopia, which is funny considering the global tend for wealth concentration and reduction of public services, including healthcare for the living.
Is that really true? To me it seems like battery drain on high resolution displays is over blown.
My 10" iPad3 with retina 2048x1536 pixel touch display lasts all day. Why can't a 11" MacBook Air have an equal or lower 1920x1080 touch display which lasts about as long as the non-retina MacBook Air.
Yes, I know that ARM based architectures are smaller and drains the battery less than any x86/x64 based one. But if the high resolution touch display was a such significant factor in battery life, then it would also be a significant factor for the iPad.
As someone who does a lot of work with non-text graphics, I would gladly sacrifice some battery for a higher resolution display, as long as I can still get 4 or more hours which is the sweet spot for me to be without a charger.
The Surface Pro with type keyboard was by far the best ultra-light device in its size. When it was released, with its 1920x1080 display, pen input, touch screen, etc. it blew past the now outdated 11" MacBook air and anything else in that size.
My only complaints was the glued down components and soldered RAM:
I hope that the next Surface Pro 2 has Haswell, and eliminates the component glue and soldered RAM, or at least offers a 6-8GB RAM option and 256-480HG mSATA drive option. Then it would be prefect for me. Hopefully with a newer Haswell chip, the fans can also be reduced or eliminated, and the battery life will increase.
I am also eyeing the Haswell based Samsung ATIV Q, but at 13" it is a bit too large for me.
I also love the thin but solid unibody construction of the Acer Aspire s7-191, but without a pen input (which is really needed for my graphic and CAD work), it does not meet my needs. Not to mention, that it appears that Acer is abandoning the 11" model, which did not yet get the Haswell refresh.
On the Apple side, it is sad that Apple refuses to make a retina MacBook Air, even though the iPad3/4 has a 2048x1536 display compared to 1440x900 on 13" Air & 1366x768 on 11" Air, and also support pen input. Even though I much prefer Unix based OSX, for the first time in 8 years, I am planning to buy a Windows based laptop/tablet this year, instead of a Mac.
I wonder if there is any Linux distribution in the works which might take full advantage of these new touch based ultralights/tablets?
Hopefully manufactories will start to reduce the size of the large bezels around the display. With small devices, the smaller the bezel, the better the display.
Bio-metrics are static passwords with very painful revocation, that one typically leaks all over the place.
Unless I wear gloves all the time to hide my fingerprints, wear a mask to hide my face, stop talking to hide my voice, etc., it is nearly impossible to hide my bio-metrics. And once captured electronically as data, they can be copied indefinitely, and cannot be revoked without a lot of pain and suffering.
Right now, criminals typically ignore capturing the bio-metrics of victims, since they are barely used by the public. But the public starts to use bio-metric for accessing high valued assets, there will be a huge financial incentive for criminals to dust drinking glasses at restaurants, photographing peoples, recording voices, etc.
The Star Trek trek that I thought was the most futuristic was the Personal Waste Transporters that would automatically beam out solid, liquid, and gaseous human waste, plus dirt, oil, etc.; which eliminated the need for toilets, showers, etc. from Star Ships and Away Missions.
Strange that in Star Trek, they could beam away all of the bad stuff from their bodies, but would still need to eat and drink in traditional fashion.
Prior to the Waste Transporters, I don't want to even think about how rough Klingon toilet paper would have been, Vulcan deodorant which requires mental discipline to ignore orders, or the poor quality of a Ferengi tampons that fall apart.
My biggest gripes with my iPad3 as a work device are:
One's fingers does not provide fine movement input like a mouse, touchpad, or fine tip pen/stylus (like the Samsung Note/Note2), which is needed for creating decent graphical design work. (It is far easier to move a mouse, touchpad, or pen/stylus by a single pixel, then my finger.)
Proper unrestricted filesystem that lets you locally share documents easily and securely locally across different applications, without handing over your unencrypted work to untrustworthy 3rd party cloud services. Why could I upload my personal document to Apple's iCloud and download it again, just to open it up in a different app?
And proper cut-and-paste of graphical (non-text) objects between applications. Why can't I click on an image, powerpoint/keynote diagram, etc, and copies these into the clipboard, and then paste into a word/pages document or e-mail message?
Why must so many muslim men in so many muslim dominated countries feel soooo insecure and threatened by women, that they must dominate and suppress women in so many ways?
It there some huge deficiency or other inadequacy in their manhood of these men, that forces them to overcompensate by suppressing women? Are a majority of these men transgendered and need to suppress women, in order to make it less tempting for them to get sex-change operations?
I sorry, but as a women, I cannot understand the rational of these men. I am personally confident enough with my own identity, that I do not want men to be suppressed and locked away in homes and in burkas.
But if so many of these poor muslim men are suffering from sexual and gender insecurity issues, we do need to help them.
Agreed. I am willing to pay more in taxes to subsidise equivalent infastructure services to those who choose to live in rural areas, once those in rural areas pay to subsidise us in urban areas with similar air quality, space, crime rates, etc.
That is a problem a virtual currency not official backed by any government, bank, or mega-corp, and is not legally tied to any hard valued currency, fungible commodity, or hard product.
Maybe Bitcoinica will offer a store credit good for their own non-transferable virtual currency?
If I was an American, I would put up a sign offering my vote for sale. Why should only politicians be the only ones that take money from "special interested"?
This can be done 100% legal by creating political action committees that accepts donations, and pays you off $$$ as a consultant.
With the removable zagmate bluetooth keyboard, iWorks office suite, omnigraffle, iOS mail + calendar + contacts, kindle reader for reading pdf's, and cdyia mobile terminal + openssh, my iPad3 has become a serious and portable work device. (The retina display is really beneficial to me.)
My biggest issue with the iPod is that the gcc tool chain is no longer available for native development with ios 5.*, as was possible in ios 4.*.:-(
Nice to know that this is the model that is being promoted in Canada, USA, and other western nations to protect us and our children from the bad guys, when it is really about protecting out-dated corporate business models and interests.
It is a shame that the vast ignorant masses have no interest in knowing that their plutocratic governments are screwing them over, in exchange for campaign contributions, cushy post-government jobs, lecture fees, and other perks.
Are you a skilled Android, iOS, OSX, or Linux malware author, and enjoy damp north-west coastal weather? Well, get out of your parent's basement and apply now to work in a large office with other similarly minded psychotic co-workers. The borg collective needs you, in order to stop its sliding market share! (After all, you can only get so far with frivolous lawsuits.)
Don't forget about GAY PORN. Gigabytes and gigabytes of the gayest, hairiest, sweatiest, large-cocked ass-pounding with spurts of semen flying everywhere. Black men, white men, ladyboys, furries...yes. Porn SO GAY and lots and lots of it. Like a big pride parade with lots and lots of real gay sex. Freddie Mercury and Rock Hudson would be proud, ahh, the progress of society. Gay, gay, gay.
Wow Anonymous Coward, you describe the GAY PORN experience with such vivid and enthusiastic detail, that you must have extensive first hand experience.
Thank you for being so brave to come out of the closet and share your experience. I just hope that your boyfriend is okay with all of your PORN viewing.
... my FaceBook router. (Hopefully a FaceBook branded Cisco device.)
Why wouldn't I want FaceBook to intercept all of my Internet traffic? It would allow FaceBook to provide better services and targeted ads just for me. This would be the best solution, until I get that FaceBook brain implant installed.
The simplest solution is to raise the minimum salary for all H1B employees to something more reasonable, like between $100,000 to $150,000, depending on the area and profession. (Note this is a minimum, the maximum is open.)
That way companies would be forced to pay the extra amount for foreign workers if they really are needed, and be incentivize to first look for local talent and/or provide training.
And H1B's recipients would stop being considered as cheap low-cost labour putting downwards pressure on salaries.
Although I love my iPad3 64GB and its retina display that really is indispensable for document reading, web, e-mail, etc., the iPad3 still has a lot of shortcomings.
If I was to design my dream tablet-phone it would have:
* Wi-Fi, 4G, GSM + CDMA (including audio for phone calls), BlueTooth, and NFC (with security element for Wallet and Authentication) * 7 inch size, which fits nicely in my purse and eliminates the need to carry a separate tablet * edge-to-edge-to-edge OLED display without any bezel * "retina" resolution, well beyond 1080p, Apple has shown this is needed * GPS (with offline turn-by-turn maps) * true USB host support, none of this restrictive camera connection kit garbage * mini-SD slot * HMDI-out slot * kick-stand + thin smart-cover like keyboard, like those in new Microsoft Surface Tablets * pointy stylus, like Samsung Note * high quality and high resolution rear camera with LED flash, and works in low light (indoors), supports RAW photos and 1080p video * 64GB min flash
I would be okay with iOS, Android, and maybe Windows, provided that there is enough decent apps, and one can get access to the underlying OS (via jailbreak/root).
With crony capitalism that has legalized theft by the 1% from the remaining 99%, is it not a surprise that the popularity is increasing for political parties promoting the legalization of theft for everyone else, to make it a level playing field.
Heck, even I am thinking of joining the pirate party, but I will might need to mug someone to pay my membership dues. (Just kidding!)
But we do have a serious problem on how crony capitalism has corrupted copyright and patent law. Especially when you consider DMCA, SOPA, digital locks, copyright extensions that has choked off public domain, etc.
The only real possibility to fix crony capitalism is with true democracy, which means mandatory public financing of political campaigns, banning of private political contributions and lobbying, banning of super-pacs and other groups, etc. So I won't hold my breath that enough mundane people will magically become sufficiently enlighten enough to support it. (Especially with the steady decline in education.)
I work for a major semi-conductor company in Silicon Valley (California USA), and we have been desperately looking for talented micro-controller firmware software developers and/or hardware engineers that are proficient with wired data-link protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, 1-wire, ISO7816-3, etc.) for nearly a year, and offering a 6 figure salary.
All of the applicants I came across, are either desktop/server developers that have no clue how to develop for a MCU with only a few kB of RAM and EEPROM, or an old school hardware engineer that is not familiar with the above mentioned wired data-link protocols.

This is great news for Linux distributions, and a small victory in the losing battle for openness.
But in the spirit of openness, hopefully bootloaders for NetBSD, OpenBSD, and FreeBSD will also be eventually signed.
Everyone should be able to install and run whatever they want on their own computers.

Reminds me of an old Kids-in-the-Hall skit:
Casher: "And another $5 for the Stupidity Tax."
Customer: "Stupidity Tax? What's that?"
Casher: "Oh, since you asked about it, you don't have to pay."
You previously see the casher successfully get away with charging the tax with the other "stupid" customers.
The reason why we have so much spam and other scams is because there are enough stupid people to make it economically viable.

Step 1: take a cheap-ass discounted $50 tablet
(android 1.x and some 2.x tablets are dropping in price, not to mention RIM playbooks)
Step 2: add some religious software and branding
(project gutenberg is a good source of free religious books)
Step 3: market it to religious groups
(especially those that are technically ignorant; oh look what granny bought you for X-mas)
Step 4: profit $$$.
Step 5: (optional..) repent for your soul at your death-bed.
Repeat the above steps for Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Hindu, etc.

Why would you need something "well beyond" 1080p on a 7" tablet?
Not everyone is blind. My eyes have no problems seeing individual pixels on my iPad3.
I read a lot of PDF data sheets, and retina quality display lets me view and read entire pages with pinching and zooming.
1080p not enough on a tablet with an edge-to-edge-to-edge display and no bezel, if the DPI is to match the ipad3.
Hardware buttons can be placed on the edges, as is the case with power, volume, ...
Although I love my iPad3 64GB and its retina display that really is indispensable for document reading, web, e-mail, etc., the iPad3 still has a lot of shortcomings.

* true USB host support, none of this restrictive camera connection kit garbage
* mini-SD slot
* HMDI-out slot
* kick-stand + thin smart-cover like keyboard, like those in new Microsoft Surface Tablets

Strange that they would animate the meteoroid impacts with sound.
Last I check, there wasn't any sound in the near perfect vacuum of space on and around the moon.
