All that remains is a boxing glove that comes out of the dashboard to punch the driver in the face when he insists on keeping his foot down in torrential rain.
If it can be triggered by a plurality of the other drivers in his immediate vicinity, all the better.
Fuck you. I can't wait to see the industry that pops up having to protect us from THE SHIT WE OWN!
It’s particularly annoying because a camera which monitors a driver for alertness could be a useful addition to a car... if all the information it collected stayed in the car. But no, even after we’ve given them tens of thousands of dollars, they still want to treat us like chattel.
'When asked if they are "willing to put in extra effort to get their job done," 96% of 2018 survey takers gave a positive result, said Mallory Bulman, vice president of research and evaluation at the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that works with government officials on workforce management issues. Moreover, 91% agreed with the statement that they "look for ways to do their jobs better," and 90% "believe their work is important."'
96% sounds amazing... but when you ask that same question of non-government workers in similar jobs, is it any different? Is it higher, lower,...?
Anyone got a repo for the "Star Trek alien" firmware?
I’ve got a general “Star Trek” firmware available as a beta, but you might want to hack at it a bit first before relying on it. Rght now, it keeps trying to color any shirt red.
Systemd is a straight-up copy of the way Windows does things.
I dunno... it seems to me that systemd is more of a wannabe clone of Apple's launchd that came about because Apple wouldn't offer launchd under the GPL.
The developers weren't thinking about hostile input when they were writing code
You'd think, by this point in time, Poettering would be very familiar with hostile input - heck, just look at most of the systemd discussions here on Slashdot!
Its hard work to ramp up and ramp down farms and the needed generational skills.
A few decades ago, the US spent a buttload of money buying out something like 50% of all dairy farms because there was too much milk being produced and the prices were too low for the farmers to make a living.
Not too long after that, of course, the remaining dairy farmers started dosing their cows with rBST to gain a competitive advantage - and now we're back in the same situation.
“Shortly” was intended to be “ssh or”. Whether that was my typo or this iPad “fixing” it for me, i can’t say - but I should’ve proof read before hitting submit, regardless.
Stock VNC is an insecure piece of crap. Yes, you can tunnel it over shortly through a vpn, but having to manually set that up is sub-optimal - especially when we’re talking about doing this from an iPad.
They've just now discovered preinstalled non-removable apps??
My first smartphone was some LG device running Froyo - I remember there were a number of non-essential yet non-removable apps on that thing. That was, what, 8-9 years ago?
Mark Zuckerberg’s resolution is to try to anything he can to resurrect his reputation.
Whenever I see Zuckerberg opining about some generic tech topic, It seems immediately obvious he’s in the same boat as Nathan Myhrvold - he’s gotten filthy rich by screwing over other people, but desperately wants that to not be his legacy.
Another consideration: I assume EU legal rules are at least somewhat similar to those in the US - meaning her “work” computer is legally open to discovery, whether it’s actually her personal computer or one provided for her.
Why should she have to use (and possibly upgrade) her personal equipment for work? She might own a computer that works fine for her personal stuff, but doesn't measure up to whatever the job requires - like running a Java-based word processor and spreadsheet.:-P
Problem is, all those American factories which manufactured leisure suits back in the 1970s have been shuttered for a few decades - and you can't have a bionic man without his leisure suit.
Back in ye olde dayes - milk used to be delivered to special boxes (provided by the milk company) just outside the house so the milk man could just leave his deliveries at the door.
We have one of those - Smith Brothers Farms still delivers dairy products to homes in the Puget Sound region.
Haven't had any hobos stealing milk from us yet... although I think a starship captain may have stolen some clothes which were drying on the line.
This definitely qualifies as “News for Nerds”. But has Jonathan Coulton written a song about him?

You sell us a car and spy on us to make money?

We guys aren’t the target demographic.

I can remotely access a Windows box from my iPad... when will you release an app that let's me access a Mac the same way?
That only works for CONTROL.
Missed it by THAT much!
I'm holding out for 99-factor authentication.

Clearly proof that our Universities are broken.
I found an edge case where something didn't work correctly. Clearly this invalidates the entire discipline.
I’m not sure GitLab is that concerned about someone else drawing off some of their non-paying customers.
I mean, come on. They’re Monarchs, most are going to be very conservative. You think they’re gonna feel welcome in California?

Of course it is Raspberry Pi with Slackware.
Sure, if your goal is to get her committed to an asylum for the insane.

I'm sure they'll do their best, in between stints driving for Uber and Lyft during the shutdown.
