There is a pretext, and there is a reason. The reason is that they're cheaper.
Exactly this. Every other claimed “benefit” boils down to the bean counters attempting self-justification - they know it’s about the money, but they don’t like saying it.
I’m not sure those two examples are even remotely comparable. And while I’m a fan of open source, let’s not pretend there haven’t been vulnerabilities like heartbleed which manage to linger, undiscovered, for months - or even years.
Darth Bezos: I’ve been waiting for you, Charles Lazarus. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master.
It's a cyclical problem. Mass Transit sucks because few people take it (other than the poor).
I don’t think that’s universally true. If I’m moving around in Seattle, I’m generally on transit - and the vast majority of other riders, whether on a bus or in a train, are middle class folks and young people. But there is the occasional poor person, or Hispanic person, or Muslim person...
Having talked to various people about taking transit, I have come to the opinion that many people’s objection to public transit boils down to being afraid they might have to sit next to someone who doesn’t look like themselves.
It used to be the case that trailers were separately-produced promotional shorts. It was slightly before my time, but I think my favorite is the one Hitchcock did for The Birds...
Yeah, this whole thing seems rather silly. Colbert describes Rackstraw as a “narcissistic sociopath who never thought he would be caught. He was trying to prove that he was smarter than anyone else.“ He also describes him as someone who likes to taunt the police. But they’ve got a grand total of six letters from a narcissistic sociopath who’s been roaming free for 40 years - all of which were written not long after the skyjacking?
For that matter, even if they could prove the author of the letters... people write letters claiming responsibility for highly visible crimes all the bloody time.
The description makes it sound like this was just a one-line “src” link to a script on Inbenta’s server.
But then, I’d argue that pulling web content from third-party sites is problematic in its own right - even though it’s an almost ubiquitous practice nowadays. Your web site is basically serving out content and instructions, which you have absolutely no control over or visibility into, to your site visitors. It’s bad enough when it’s ad network stuff... but this was apparently a “need help?” tool.
My daughter was born three months early - so we spent a lot of time at the hospital early on. That’s where I first learned the whole “use a paper towel to turn off the water and open the door” shtick - I’d never heard any of that before.
I assume there’s a MacBook mentioned somewhere, but it’s certainly not in this summary. So if it’s not important enough for the summary, why put it in the title?
The submission suggests scientific controversy... but the philosophical controversy regarding whether this is actually something humans should strive for is probably a much bigger deal.

... and Google gets to track and log all their online activities from day one. It’s a win win!
I reached this one section and immediately thought of Beevis and Butthead:
”He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people”
Hehe. Hehe. “Manly Firmness” hehe. Hehe.

Also, people may not try as hard to avoid rush hour if they can sit and browse the internet or watch a movie.
They can do that already... it’s called public transportation.
I take the train to work, so I am free to read, watch movies, listen to podcasts, or nap during my commute.
They were better back when they were hacking banks.
The CCC should go back to their roots... start building dams and bridges again.

You can have quality or availability, but not both. If you need both, pay for more employees.
We just got a new administrator who does not get this - at all. She even got angry when I tried to explain the concept to her.
Time to update the ol’ resume...

Mount Everest. Forbidding, aloof, terrifying. The mountain with the biggest tits in the world.
Well, it is run by Ming the Merciless - and he’s show. a special interest in this particular case.
More like Dave WHINER, amirite?
How would moving the transport of altered files over to https address any of the issues you list?
