  1. Do you blame them? on Skype Blocks Customers Using OS-X 10.5.x and Earlier · · Score: 1

C'mon. Most people are doing this. WHY?! Because Snow Leopard (10.6.x) is the first release of OSX that removes the PPC aspect of it. What software developer, in 2014 wishes to provide legacy support for an architecture that Apple abandoned 5+ years ago? No new Macs are being developed with PPC. Let's move with the times already.

This is my biggest issue with this sort of thing; I still have my original Nintendo Entertainment System from 1985. I am an avid fan of retro gaming. What if, in 30 years, I still have an XBox 720? Is Microsoft going to guarantee lifetime online authentication for this console? When/if the servers go offline, it's time to throw it in the trash? This is a piece of hardware that I would be paying for, and should be able to enjoy it for 50+ years, pass it down, whatever.

Could be pretty interesting for 3D interactive worlds; these type of worlds have always been far more successful on the PC. Those static/boring standing/dancing animations 3d characters currently have could be a thing of the past. Interaction between avatars could be a bit more "real" with something like this. It certainly is no "Lawnmower Man" hardware however it's an interesting step for metaverses and MMORPGs. Granted, the amount of space (if based on Kinect specs) you would need for your computer station would be enormous, but I think "the computer" really could benefit from these sort of user input technology.

I guess we've finally reached an age where it's assumed you have an internet connection in the same way it's assumed you have a phone number. Guess the thinking is, "validate your copy online, or don't play." Why bother? Someone's going to crack it. Do what you did in the past Blizzard ... allow local registration, and if duplicate keys are found on battle.net, refuse online play. This worked well in the past, and hell, I even bought a copy of Starcraft. ;)

  14. They are still who they were then on Study Shows Standing Up To Bullies Is Good For You · · Score: 1

Obviously those that chose to stand up for themselves in terms of being bullied at a young age, are different, than those that did not. This study is nonsense. There's a core difference in personalities between the two types, so it's natural for the results to be different years later in terms of social maturity. While our environment is a strong influence as far as our inner being is concerned, we are all born with a core set of personalities and social demeanor that only change moderately based on experience. All this tells is is that those that "had it in them" to stand up for themselves in their childhood, continue to "have it in them" later in life. Some people, regardless if they are harmed or not, do not have it in them to "return hostility" in childhood or adult life. All this proves is that the two personality types have continued down the road of maturity with their core emotions/personalities intact, as expected.

  18. Perhaps not the best idea ... on Experiences with Replacing Desktops w/ VMs? · · Score: 1

I don't know how many users you have on your LAN, but gigabit or not, that's going to put some serious strain on your network when everybody is accessing these images at the same time. A terminal services solution seems to fill this need more so than a virualization solution.

What I like about virtualization (with Windows) is that it is not hardware specific. One can run the same image on a totally different machine, so hardware changes and standardization is is not a concern.

If you standardize your desktops (like an OptiPlex or similar) you can achieve nearly the same convienence simply by ghosting the drives and deploying desktops in 10 minutes or less, with no network strain.

I'm not yet convinced that virtualization is a "terminal server" killer; the ability to patch, maintain, and install/uninstall software on a single machine that effects all users without rolling out a new image seems to be the way to go.

  20. Trillian Should Really Consider Cross-Platform on Linux Instant Messengers · · Score: 2, Insightful

As mature as Trillian is, it still is unable to support ALL of those annoying messenger specific features, but it's as close as you're gonna get in regards to "meeting in the middle" for all IM networks. The skins are very sexy, webcam/filetransfers seem to work without issue. Overall it's gorgeous when you throw away the default skin.

Why not go cross platform? Trillian would be great if one was able to us it on Linux, OSX, etc. natively (I've used it under WINE without issue but that's more work than any regular user would want to go through.) The fact of the matter is that a majority of IM junkies are still not willing to throw away AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, etc. for Trillian on Windows, but it'd surely be a very nice solution for a Linux user. Of course most of their customers would still be under Windows, and one might argue the development costs to go cross platform would not justify the potential customers on these platforms, but seriously a nice IM solution is _so_ needed under Linux. I think the need is greater than they might realize.

  25. Good move on Macromedia Pushes Flash For All Things Web · · Score: 1

I personally feel this is the way to go, but what Macromedia needs to take into consideration, is that HTML support in browsers is a given, no matter WHAT you are using. The flash plugin absolutely needs to be opened up for platforms such as Solaris x86, Digital-UNIX, HP-UX, etc. Currently this is not the case, so the default fallback will always be HTML. Reality is, not everybody is in a pretty MS/IE enviroment, I hope they really push for totall flash plugin compatibility accross the board, for even legacy OS'es.
