I like it! Take two people you feel you can trust, each with half a master password for your keepass vault. You may not want those two people to know who the other person is. That, and perhaps hide a copy of your keepass file somewhere in a fire/water proof location that those individuals are aware of. Then instruct them to return their halves of the password to you along with the keepass file when you are deemed fit mentally.

If people are at work all day when the sun is out, and the car is not under the "special" garage, then how will it ever charge fully? Sure, you may get more garage charging time in the summer months, but that time is cut short the other half the year. I like the idea of adding the lenses to the solar panels. The garage sounds ridiculous.

This isn't the Linux you're looking for. This is stripped down and intended to run Steam in Big Picture mode all the time. No desktop at all. The standard Steam client on a Linux system is what you're looking for.

Personally, I shy away from the bleeding edge Linux systems and stick with CentOS.

"Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want. Gamers are empowered to join in the creation of the games they love. SteamOS will continue to evolve, but will remain an environment designed to foster these kinds of innovation."

    - Sounds like it's meant to be hacked however the end-user sees fit. If I want to add a desktop I will. I agree that adding the steam client to a current linux desktop might be best if you want stability in your desktop apps. But don't you think games would run best on Steam when run on the official OS made by Valve?

At this point I don't think it's any particular mainstream group (religious or not) causing issues, just the nutcases and extremists. Take away religion and you'll still have humans killing each other over many other things. Bad people are not bound to a single religion, social group, creed, or lack thereof.

I would be careful not to confuse nutcase/extremist with "religious". They are not the same. I know many religious people who are very tolerant, and would most certainly not force their beliefs on others. They may not agree, but they aren't hateful. If people really adhere to their beliefs (especially Christians) they should be quite the opposite of hateful. And there should be more tolerance on all sides. I may not believe or practice the same things as you, or you may not believe or practice anything at all. And that is fine. Nor should either of us have to follow each others' beliefs or practices if we don't want to.

I think the individuals with the megaphone you mentioned above were wrong to force the couple to adhere to their beliefs. Would I call the megaphone touting Islamist a religious? No. I'd call him crazy. People can be devout in their own beliefs without flying off the handle and hurting others. We are all on this planet together. We aren't going anywhere else anytime soon. We need to live and work together respectfully.

  13. Go ahead on Ask Slashdot: Easy Wi-Fi-Enabled Tablet For My Dad? · · Score: 1

I actually ran into this same situation with an older friend of mine. She asked for my help and advice on getting a tablet. I suggested the new Nexus 7 as it is just as easy to use as any other Android/iOS tablet. Besides that, it is less expensive than Apple's products and has a much higher screen resolution. What does she do after I lay out all the options, explain the pros and cons, and give her my informed opinion? She says, "Thanks, I appreciate all your help, but I think I'll get the ipad mini because I hear from my daughter that it's easy to use."

Keep in mind no matter what you get, there is a learning curve. I just don't see any difference between the OS options. And it appears the only factor she considered was what her daughter TOLD her was easy. She ended up paying more for a device with smaller resolution and equal complexity. I still ended up teaching her how to use the ipad mini, and I've never even owned an apple product.

On a side note, her daughter also tried to talk her into cancelling her current internet service and start using a Verizon hotspot AT THE SAME PRICE. Every hotspot I've ever used has had absolutely horrific speeds. At the same price as current service, why do that except if you want connectivity on the move? I managed to talk her out of that since she has a wifi router at home, and wifi is available almost everywhere these days.

Just get him the new Nexus 7. No matter what you buy, he's going to have to learn how to tap and swipe. I have the 2012 model and am very pleased with it. I don't think apple is more or less complicated, just more expensive and over hyped for what you really get.

Our disposable society needs to change. I love technology, but I try to make use of something until it is no longer repairable or usable.

I have a desktop I built back in 2004 which I still use for development. It runs Linux just fine. I've replaced a dead PSU, a dead HDD, and had to reapply thermal paste to the CPU/Heatsink. It's still running.

My other box, I built back in 2009. It's a Core2Duo I still use as my main system. Does it play all the latest games, no. But it plays all the games I care for, plays Bluray, etc. I don't NEED a new box, and all the marketing we drown in everyday that says otherwise is not going to change my mind.

I'm not going to be one of those people who drool over the latest gadget, and immediately throw away last years model like it's nothing. We should value what we have.
