    sony's probably (hopefully) looking at linux on the ps2 to be a useful way to introduce further iterations of psx technology as "home stations" (sic) rather exclusively gaming consoles. sure, not many people are going to buy a ps2 just to put linux on it, but the consumer electronics movement is moving towards a One Box solution ... it will provide TV, movies on demand, broadband access, etc.

    microsoft knows this and is trying to further their monopoly with the x-box and the future homestation. they have the advantage of already having an operating system and development platform to put on it ... sony doesn't. they're likely looking to linux to provide competition for microsoft on that front. by porting linux, they allow for a large amount of already-existing software to run on the PS/2 with little or no modification necessary to the existing sources.

    are there any software design courses offered at your school?

    while i was at university, i found myself embroiled in a lot of competition with other students, but i was the biggest source of it. i personally find it rather difficult to trust someone else's code, especially when we're graded on style, when my marks are on the line and my name goes in on the project. of course, most software is written in a team, so i'll have to learn somewhere.

    this problem of mine eventually led to a burnout and i'm currently "between schools" ... what was offered at my old university is a course in software design where you were forced to work on a project as a team, and it was much more involved than most group projects. i was waiting to take it in my fourth year (which never came) and i certainly regret it. it would have helped a great deal. i think courses like this are being offered at more schools each year if they're not already common. people like me are all too common in this field ...

  13. Virus vs. Trojan on Garfinkel Warns Of Linux Virus "Epidemic" · · Score: 1
    /begin{rant}

    It's important to keep in mind that a Trojan is not the same as a virus.

    A virus is a self-replicating piece of machine code that usually attaches itself to the end of executables. It does not have to be malicious. It merely has to be able to replicate itself and spread. Just like a real virus.

    A Trojan, on the other hand, is a program (not necessarily self-replicating) that piggybacks along with a familiar, trusted program. Malicious hackers and computer criminals have been using Trojans to propagate malicious code on other systems since computers and criminals met each other.

    Viruses are often Trojan'd onto familiar programs as a method of introducing them into a system, but once there, they take care of spreading themselves.

If Lucas adds the option to view the Special Edition changes or to turn them off, I'd be VERY happy. I'll wait for them to come out.
