  1. I predict... on White House Derails Attempts to End Illegal Wiretapping · · Score: 4, Insightful

This administration is going to be remembered as the one that tried to undo the separation of powers between the legislative, judicial and executive branches. The tactic of ignoring laws and judgments that do not fit the executive agenda has worked for 6 years now, with no sign of letting up until the next election (at best).

Spoken like a true jackass. I don't pay money for a game just to have some fat, pimply-faced basement-dweller rox0r me over and over. Unless, of course, the game is specifically just PvP. In MMOs, though, free-PvP with no safe areas simply weeds out everyone but the assholes. Darktide and its swear-or-die silliness is a great example of that.

Spoken like someone who has no idea what an executive job is like. Just because you cannot get those jobs does not mean they do not require skill. Sure, there are crap managers, executives, etc. But there are even more crap programmers, sysadmins, dbas, and so on. Saying management self-selects for incompetence is nothing more than sour grapes and envy.

And look what it got them. An article full of (purposeful) contradictions that any scientist with a modicum of knowledge would have seen as such. As a result they were laughed at by their peers and by scientists as well, and then they mounted a wounded, chip-on-the-shoulder defense in various media.

I am not sure how a journal with no editorial standards to speak of could hope to be taken seriously. Even if innovative and creative articles that challenge the "current scientific orthodoxy" are published in Social Text, damn few scientists are going to read them and even fewer will view them with any credibility.

Sokal's books on the subject (written with a mathematician colleague) are illuminating in the extreme, as he take pains to show how many revered figures in literary criticism and philosophy use bad science and math to back up the most outrageous of claims.

While I personally believe the post-modern perspective has much to offer any thinker in any field, I also must agree with Sokal that attempts by Lacan, Irigaray and others to legitimise their own arguments with mathematical and scientific concepts they clearly do not understand do nothing to advance any thesis or argument, except to fool those who not realize the claims are bogus. (Or perhaps Lacan, et al, do understand and are being intellectually dishonest by misusing them).

  22. Re:That explains PC gamers then on The Cult of Mac · · Score: 1

I think you miss the point a bit. PC Gamers care about playing games. The gamers I know could care less about the platform and OS, they simply want to be able to play the latest games with good performance.

I paid for an Alienware machine and I am happy with what I got. It is my home machine, and I play games with it. I built my wife's gaming rig from the ground up, and she is very happy with it. Both of these machines have easy-access cases and a huge range of components that we can upgrade over the years to keep the systems in top form for gaming.

Paying a little bit more for a Mac over a PC would have gotten me a groovy BSD-based UI and a crap selection of games (a handful of major titles ported way late and a ton of lameware made just for macs).

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Apple. But I will never consider a Mac until their game selection and component customizability *for gaming* matches what I can get with a PC. I have a feeling many gamers feel similarly.

  23. Re:One or the other on Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed Launches · · Score: 1

City of Heroes is, in my opinion, good. Stable, fun gameplay, regular free content drops, a monthly free comic book, and devs who take keeping the game fun as their mantra. It is less popular with EQ/UO uberguilds and catassers, though, because the game does not really reward massive time investments and/or giant guilds that monoploize content (almost everything is instanced). You can solo all the way to max level, and you can have a really good time in teams (groups of up to 8).

By the way, the new content is not limited to new zones. Players have so far seen new costume options (multiple costumes, capes and auras - particle effects unique to a costume), new gameplay systems (the exemplar ssytem that allows you to reverse-sidekick so that you can play lower level missions, in addition the already-extant sidekick system). The upcoming content releases will include a new skill system, new archetypes, and new power sets (sonic, magnetism, bows, staves, shields). Given that the game was already pretty enjoyable, with involving, fast-paced combat, patching in even more fun (as opposed to trying to patch in the fun that was originally intended to be there a la SWG) is a novel approach.

Of course, if the steady stream of new content stops then I will probably lose interest. But so far so good!

  24. But who wants it? on Videophones Revisited · · Score: 2, Insightful

Sure, there may be some uses for videophones (videoconferenceing, etc.) but in general is there really a huge demand? I personally would not want to use videophones on a regular basis because I am usually multi-tasking when I speak to someone on the phone... at home I am often cooking, doing laundry, writing emails to other folks, etc. At work I use my phone call time to do code reviews, read emails, etc. If people could see me and see what I was doing, I would likely have to single-task in order to tnot be perceived as rude, if you see what I mean. Not having video is for me a convenient feature of telephony.

  25. Re:doing it right on Joel Rants About Resumes · · Score: 1

And if I am the one with the job opening, you will write in such a way that meets my standards, else you will not be considered. The employer/applicant relationship is not one of equals, and it is not democratic.

Sure, language evolves over time. However, the examples you trot out to defend poor writing are themselves mere jokes and I would not hesitate to trash a cover letter written using either of them.

Look, it is very simple. Whenever I have a position to fill, I am usually given very little information about each individual applicant. I also have very little time within which to make a judgment about each applicant. My pool of resumes is generally quite large, and in order to thin it down, I will consider things such as grammar, spelling and layout as clear examples of an applicant's ability to take pride in her/his work and her/his propensity to show attention to detail.

If you do not feel those things are important, that tells me much about you. In fact, given how many applicants I have who are both highly qualified and take some care with their resume and cover letter, it tells me all I need to know about you. Your resume goes in the bin.

It may hurt to realize it, but from an employer's point of view, you are not unique, your coding skills are not the be-all and end-all, and there are very likely people more qualified than you applying for the job. Having considered all this, you should endeavor to do everything in your power to avoid being tossed in the trash from the start.
